@@calzoneyyy if you think so, then fine. i still use it, as an aspie. there‘s nothing wrong with the term and everyone i know still uses it. like 'homosexual', some people use it negatively but that doesn‘t make it outdated either.
Britta and Troy’s relationship really resonated with me because it reminded me of two relationships I had with men that ended in the bittersweet realization that we didn’t have chemistry and we were meant to just be friends.... I’m a lesbian.
I love how everyone rushes to point out Rachel as if she isn't the character Abed had met while Troy was dating Britta, then seemingly forgot about untill after Troy had left....
21:50 this actually bothers me even more considering on the paintball episode abed is playing a character (he says it himself, he'll be the han solo character that by default should be Jeff's, you know? Annie's endgame love interest?) while on the zombie episode he's doing it for REAL
ohhhhhh SHIT you’re right!!! wow. so if abed hadn’t called dibs on the role that jeff would usually fill, on an alternate timeline (if i may) that could’ve been jeff and annie, a more expected pairing. DAMN
Yeah, we've seen time and time again that Abed sticks to the bit 100% when he's reenacting film scenes. Notably, he turns down Annie's flirting once he's not playing Han anymore, since he's Abed again and isn't actually interested in kissing Annie outside of the movie scene context.
I’m never going to get over when Troy in the Freaky Friday episode, acting like Abed, starts stimming with his hands. We rarely see Abed stimming but that means that he openly stims around Troy 🥺. Also, their handshake comes from a video Troy saw but Abed thought Troy created it. There’s just something so wholesome to me about Troy watching a video about ‘cool things to do with your friends’ and being excited to show his new friend. I don’t know if I necessarily ship them (because I’m autistic and really struggle understanding the difference between close friends and people in a relationship) but I hope to have what they have one day :’-).
Feels right to point out that there was a comic con panel where the actor for Annie was asked who she thought Annie should end up with, and she said Britta
So much weirdness about this argument- can non-straight individuals not have friends? Can people in a romantic relationship not also be friends? Isn’t there a whole spectrum beyond just romance v. Friendship?
And while there is some merit to that argument, it’s ALWAYS used in response to people shipping two people of the same sex, to a point where it’s just homophobia.
troy saying he just wants to "watch tv with abed" during the gay party is so overlooked. movies and shows are literally abed’s love language!! come on!!
I'm so tired of this whole "can't men just have a deep platonic relationship without making it gay???" rebuttal, honey you have had these for centuries in mainstream media let us have some of this representation for ourselves too Also the implication that a deep feeling of camaraderie is not a necessary part of a romantic relationship is worrying at best lol
*Achilles and Patroclus:* um... we're gay and we've also existed for centuries tho. *Historians:* no ur not ur just good friends *Achilles and Patroclus:* 👁👄👁
It scares me that so many people think being friends with your significant other is a bad thing. Bro what do yall do together. If you don't want to hang out with your lover why would you date them
Even Pierce, I'm not sure. Between the hint at romance with Abed in the Sara Bareilles episode (it's a joke, but still) and his very intolerant father he still hasn't break from (in the gay episode even), and the fact that he tries many times to put himself between Troy and Abed (the stolen handshake, the jealousy in the housewarming episode) there's material for a theory there. And then he dies, he stirs up some shit in the study group... and at last breaks Abed and Troy for good. Yeah...
@@medealkemy wait you're absolutely right. i know the creators also intentionally draw a lot of similarities between Jeff and what we would expect young Pierce to act like, the only difference is that Jeff is a lot more empathetic and by season 2/3 he kind of breaks out of the "straight male protagonist" archetype. so it would make sense if Pierce was "y'know" because in my opinion Jeff is so obviously not straight (i could write an essay about it as a gay person with a bad relationship with my parents who deflects and uses sarcasm as a coping mechanism) i was kind of disappointed because his character grows so much throughout the seasons. also like how the video talks about reclaiming the Trobed gay jokes, they could do the same with Jeff since he's literally the but of every other gay joke on the show (which are usually made by Pierce, go figure). i also hated the "gay guys go after straight guys" trope they were so obviously implying with the dean and Jeff... but that's another story.
I would love the community movie to have The Dean fully admit his crush on Jeff in an emotionally honest non-joky manner and have jeff just politely turn him down so that they move and become a healthy platonic thing and not The Dean being a predatory person in a position of power over Jeff his employee. You could get a good scene out of it and have their relationship evolve. Jeff and the Dean being friends could be fun to watch, they both have a flair for fashion and they both are desperate for approval, and they both love and see the value of Greendale more than any other character. Also, this has nothing to do with Jeff being or not being the, it has to do with him clearly not being into Dean and not cool with his unwanted advances.
Well i mean the dean did think that jeff was in love with him due to jeff giving him the wrong number and that japanese kid that would later become the leader of the yakuza
so we aren’t going to talk about how cool Abed’s bisexual sweater is (the green one with the stripes) it’s the one he wore in the sixth season fifth episode for reference
So wild how straight people read heterosexuality into everything?? The idea that Troy and Abed (or Britta and Annie) are "clearly straight" makes no sense to me. Am I even watching the same show as these people?
i mean i agree but people also read homosexuality into everything. like i wouldn't say britta, annie, or really any of them are 100% straight or gay. like you don't _know_ know, because there's not much romantic subtext for any of them. but people call homosexuality on feminine/emotional men and shit and thats just kinda toxic. i get it if you wanna hc someone as gay for comfort, but saying that they definitely are gay just bc theyre close with each other is not great. their relationship is purely platonic, as far as we can tell. thats it.
@@burdlo4687 OK my original reply to this has entirely disappeared?? But to clarify: 1. I think straight readings of these characters are totally valid. My main issue is when people ignore textual evidence and pretend it doesn't exist because it doesn't fit with their (heterosexual) interpretation. 2. I definitely don't think Troy and Abed (or anyone in the show) is gay just because they're close (or because they have feminine traits). I think they *might* be gay because their relationship is heavily coded as romantic. As explained in the video.
@@theladynim2 it isn't coded as romantic, though. the point of their friendship is that they're extremely close. they say they love each other, hug each other, and jokingly plan their life out years in the future. that isn't romantic coding. romantic coding is different. it's deeper, and it's _romantic._ like. for some reason 2 friends who are close are considered to be coded as romantic? i've had a few friends who i loved and cuddled with, but they were just friends. that was never romantic, and it probably seemed romantic to close minded people with too many expectations, but it was not romantic unless it became romantic, which is very different. you can ship them and want them to be together, but their relationship is not "coded" as romantic. johnlock was coded as romantic (im still pissed about that one) because everyone assumed they were dating throughout the show, and it's implied that you'd want them to date. trobed isn't "coded" as romantic. that doesn't mean you can't ship them, but the coding isn't there.
@@burdlo4687 Did you... Watch the video? Cos I'm not gonna re-explain the whole thing to you. But to put it as plainly as possible the writers *intentionally* draw parallels between Troy and Abed's relationship and explicitly romantic relationships over and over and over again. Their scenes are full of romantic tropes. They frequently make references to romantic films and TV shows when talking about their friendship. All that is romantic coding. Now does it mean that the writers thought of them as gay? No probably not. It's done for comedic effect mostly. The show absolutely wants you to see them as just two very close friends and that's totally valid. That's canon. But to say there's no hint of potential romance even vaguely implied there? it's just straight up not true.
I sorta think that Abed wouldn’t care about someone’s gender, as long as he can bond with them over his special interests. I think he’d be at least pan, of course bi works to, but pan is my headcanon
honestly i head cannon him as pan and asexual. he doesn’t really care about sex or gender he just wants a personal bond and someone to share everything he loves with.
i need someone to address the fact that jeff is most definitely a repressed/closeted bisexual because i am sick and tired of fighting this war alone. that man is NOT straight and i will die on this hill.
Me: We have to normalize close and affectionate male friendships without romanticizing them. It's important that men are able to have close friendships like girls without their sexuality or intentions being questioned. Also me: We have to normalize functional homosexual relationships without just putting them down as friendships.
It is entirely possible for writers to write male relationships that aren't filled with subtext or gay jokes that make people feel inclined to view those relationships as romantic. That isn't out of nowhere lol, queer people are not necessarily just reading romance out of thin air (especially when a lot of people see it - sometimes it's a lesser known pairing that people headcanon, that's different). It's possible to write close male friendships that have overt affection and care, without constant gay jokes or subtext but it seems rare for writers to do that (and the reason is homophobic gay jokes and queer baiting probably lol). Also, I don't think people making assumptions about a straight man's sexuality because of how close he is to his friend is really as harmful as people make it sound. Like yeah if it's done in an invasive and constant way, that's bad. But if two men have a close friendship that is somewhat ambiguous I don't see the harm in that friendship being occasionally interpreted as potentially romantic ( _especially_ with fictional characters), like romance and friendship are both valid interpretations and also constantly happen to male-female friendships in the same situation. Yet no one is complaining when a friendship between a man and woman is interpreted by some people as potentially romantic lol. Someone thinking you or some situation you're in is gay when in actuality it isn't is not any where near as harmful as people make it seem and men are less likely to see it as a threat unless they have some internalised homophobia that relks them being gay is bad and is it is inherently awful for people to think you are gay. The normalisation of non-sexual non-romantic affection, of friendship, is important. But to me that should start first and foremost with m/f relationships and friendships, because straight romance is already heavily represented in the media. This is one of the reasons it sometimes comes across as bad faith when people criticize queer pairings like Troy and Abed in defense of 'male friendships because they rarely seem to care about representation of friendship unless potential mlm couples are brought up lol. Like where is that energy with m/f friendships and m/m friendships at any other point in time?
@Rocknalldatime99 I'm a queer writer myself (also on the spectrum) who also heavily values m/f platonic relationships. You're preaching to the choir and I'm confused where this is coming from unless you're simply adding onto my original brief statement
Make a video on why annie is sapphic !! (Only showing interest in men that are unavailable, seemingly uncomfortable with actual romantic confrontation with men, tried to kiss britta, softened her expression when picturing dating britta, there’s quite a lot implying she’s a lesbian with internalized homophobia lol)
Troy and britta were so bad! Maybe it was cuz of the gas leak year but srsly they completely changed troys character. He didnt care about brittas feelings at all in the relationship yet b4 that troy and britta were such good friends ( like the dance episode)
imo their pairing was well thought but poorly written (mainly due to the gas leak). There is a good video out there that explains their relationship (is called "A Defence of Troy & Britta")
I kinda loved their break up. But not because I hated them together so much, I just liked the way they handled it, showing platonic love is still very important.
ok so fun fact: donald glover and danny pudi improvised it! yep that epic and emotional love confession was completely improvised!! in s2 DVD commentary when the scene came up donald mentioned that to him and danny quoting probably the most well know and iconic romantic scenes not just in star wars but in all film didnt feel forced or weird ,, it felt right to them so they had to do the confession. OH ALSO FUN DETAIL THAT MAKES ME WANNA RIP OUT MY HAIR /hj in the two in season 2 where Troy and Abed in the morning end card where star burns/garrett and rich/jeff are their "guests" a yellow sign with big red letters reads "DUMP TROY MARRY ME" can be seen in the backgroud being held by one of the extras.

love the zoom class framing! v fun. also it's nice to see a ship between characters of color! i feel like fandom tends to focus on white characters (and show creators/writers/directors tend to center white characters, which doesnt help), so it's a nice change to talk abt a ship with zero white people
Ehh Annie and Troy are very one sided and Abed and Annie is slightly one sided. Abed only likes Annie when he’s in character and Troy just sees her as a friend (said in the shoe several times)
this has probably already been said, but also there is more reason to think that troy and abeds “i love you” moment is a genuine confession, bc during abed and annie’s moment abed was playing a character. during the scene with troy that was just abed being abed. but with annie he was playing han.
I get the objections regarding to them having a sexual relationship. But them having a romantic relationship? Very possible. I think it started as a gay joke but it just got out of control in the writers room of the show. Not my fault their homophobia ended up making the characters a little gay.
The whole cant guys just be friends argument pisses me off because those same people would want them to be in a relationship if they were a boy and a girl.
i mean the jeff/annie thing started when annie was 18, troy was already in his 20s and so more "adult" when he and britta started to be a thing. but yea its not a good pairing.

Because eventually, it all will." Abed talking about the two loves of his life.
yup! it’s canon that he is. :) have you seen the show? if not, i recommend. abed is my favorite neurodivergent and autistic representation, i’ve never seen a character who resonated with me more.
Yeah, it says it a few times, it helps, I’m on the spectrum and he’s one of the best portrayals of autism, a 2009 sitcom character is one of the best portrayals of autism. People really don’t know how to portray us.
I always got the feeling that Abed is fully aware that the two of them are in love, but he also enjoys their friendship and so he is alright waiting as long as he needs to for Troy to realize it himself
The moment that made me cry more than any other moment on Television was the episode when Troy left, and I only watched after YEARS of putting it off because of how upset I was by the idea of Troy leaving Abed. It's the only fictional relationship I can think of that I've felt that strongly about.
My husband showed me community towards the middle of the pandemic as I had never watched it before and let’s say I pretty much never stopped watching it, I just keep watching it over and over again starting it from my favorite episodes. Last night my husband said “we’re not watching community let’s watch something else” and I felt my heart break
I tend to be completely oblivious when it comes to romance and chemistry between two characters (including male and female) and even I ship Troy and Abed
May I also bring up how in season 1 episode 14 Abed gets on stage and does his own tap dance routine by himself. I think that ties into him being comfortable with himself and maybe even his sexuality?? Idk I just thought of that
one big scene i think would have been worth mentioning was during abed’s birthday diner with jeff, season 2 episode 18, abed says that he created character for himself “chad” and how as chad he experienced “my first true love falling for my best friend”.

I love whole "oh guys can be friends" comments. Like... as if all the movies around are literally filled with open gay couples and now people saw one questionable couple and cry in despair: "Oh, please, please give us at least one pair of friends. There so much gay couples around! Give us a little diversity!" All films full of male friends. Nothing bad if one most obliviously romantic pair would be gay not just friends.
on a slightly different note, despite the weird preditory and stereotypy stuff with the dean, his character arc always felt most similar to the way i viewed my own queerness. sorta amorphous, not easy to label, and tied up in kink. that's something ive never seen on screen before or since, certainly not from a character that becomes really sympathetic and fairly 3 dimensional.

Abed has always known this, but he was content with their previous unofficial love because according to his calculations it would be best if he were to let Troy figure out his love for him on his own and not to tell him. However, it doesn't go back to normal immediately; (obviously) they've both changed and its been a long time since they saw eachother, but they do find that bond again and 3 years later they are married.

Yeah, we've seen time and time again that Abed sticks to the bit 100% when he's reenacting film scenes. Notably, he turns down Annie's flirting once he's not playing Han anymore, since he's Abed again and isn't actually interested in kissing Annie outside of the movie scene context.

the entire study group (with the exception of shirley and pierce) is not straight. in this essay i will-
Even Pierce, I'm not sure.

So wild how straight people read heterosexuality into everything??
The idea that Troy and Abed (or Britta and Annie) are "clearly straight" makes no sense to me. Am I even watching the same show as these people?
i mean
i agree but people also read homosexuality into everything. like i wouldn't say britta, annie, or really any of them are 100% straight or gay. like you don't _know_ know, because there's not much romantic subtext for any of them. but people call homosexuality on feminine/emotional men and shit and thats just kinda toxic. i get it if you wanna hc someone as gay for comfort, but saying that they definitely are gay just bc theyre close with each other is not great. their relationship is purely platonic, as far as we can tell. thats it.
Also the first line was entirely a joke lol
@@burdlo4687 OK my original reply to this has entirely disappeared?? But to clarify:
