    When I'm faced with this situation, I use EZ Sand as it dries harder and it has no organic compounds that mold & mildew feed on.
    Just my suggestion.

    I suggest using plastic corner bead and stainless nails or screws. I'm not crazy about the plastic type, but the metal corner bead will rust sooner or later, making plastic the better choice.

    Proper fix is to build out that wall atleast 2 inches to accept tile and caulk while utilizing plastic corner bead. Also, when needing to shim partial studs, you should wet shim behind the backer board.

    Here in Canada we’d (i’d) use durabond there. Durabond is a setting compound that’s one step softer than concrete.
    Thanks for the videos, they do answer a lot of questions.

    I had the exact same situation on the edge of my tub(your left side edge is so thin and a peoblem for tile. Both my tub edges are like that) . New installation . I used durock on the surround but ran purple dry wall on the outside and the edge is exposed to tiling and or moisture . I am going to tear off the purple from the tub down and redo it using durock strips from the top of tub down and leave the purple drywall from there up as it won't be getting wet with the sliding doors in place .
    Thanks for the Vid ! It hit my question right on the head !!!

    I just tiled my tub surround and it ends at the edge where the surround ends and the bathroom wall meets. I want to put the bullnose on the wall and grout the space between the end of the tile and where the bullnose would be on the wood wall. Do I need to waterproof the strip of wood because the grout will soak up some kind of water? Thanks

    I would like to see how you finished the "problem area" at 1:18 in this video. I have something similar except I have a door jamb about an inch from my tub and I'm trying to figure out how to finish it. I'm not sure if that part is in another one of your videos, but I was unable to find it. Thanks for all the great info!!!

    Thanks for the videos! I'm wondering if the metal corner bead you use is specifically for cement board (Durock, etc) or is the just the same bead you'd use with drywall..?

    I am having a hard time on how to transition from durock cement board to drywall. my tiles are gonna end up right where sheetrock and cement board meet. at some places the sheetrock sticks out more as well.

    • @SoThatsHowYouDoThat
      @SoThatsHowYouDoThat  7 років тому +3

      Just cut back the sheetrock some more and finish the joint off to the tile area then be sure to waterproof any joint compound in the tile area with a waterproof paintable membrane.

    I'm beginning the remodel of a bathroom, same setup as this one.....half of corner bead on dry wall other half of bead on GoBoard which is a light weight type of board.....my question is won't the joint compound lose its strength after being exposed to the humidity and moisture in the bathroom? I don't want the tiles falling off the wall. Also did you nail the corner bead through the cement board? Brand new and learning as I go. Great video series, and thank you for your help!

    • @SoThatsHowYouDoThat

      No because you need to paint over it with a waterproof membrane. Look for my videos on waterproofing I have more on my website inside Tile University. Go to sothatshowyoudothat.com.

    Liking your vids. You mentioned a method to square the corners with thin-set and were going to get back to it but I don't think you did. I'm at the stage where I have to do this so would be interested in the process. I'm thinking I'll just fill it in with a trowel much like you did for the hollow spot in the wall. Probably drag my square down the corner like a trowel. Stop me if I'm sounding crazy... I actually was just going to leave it, cut the tile to fit, and hope the grout pulled it all together. Lame, right?

    • @SoThatsHowYouDoThat
      @SoThatsHowYouDoThat  3 роки тому

      both will work. The inside corners are easier to deal with when they are not square. However, the outside corners need to be perfect.

      SoThatsHowYouDoThat : Probably a stupid DIYer question, but anyway... I have an INSIDE corner, where I need to butt tile up against drywall. Is there ANY way to do this so it looks passable, or do I just need to rethink the whole decorating plan for this bathroom? This is a wall/wall corner, not a wall/ceiling corner.

    I thought you don't want to use thinset in the corners because of when the house shifts but you taped them for thinset? Most use caulk in the corners to prevent cracks right?

    • @SoThatsHowYouDoThat
      @SoThatsHowYouDoThat  6 років тому +1

      No. I like to just use tape and membrane when i get tge corners tight. Otherwise i fill with thinset then membrane over the too. The membrane (hydroban is what I use ) acts as a crack isolator and a waterproof barrier. Check out my members area for all my videos. Also I am there to help you with your questions. Tile university. There is a link below.

    I'm working on my shower and my question is are you supposed to put thinset behind the tape, inside the seams, and then lay the tape with another coat on top?

    • @SoThatsHowYouDoThat
      @SoThatsHowYouDoThat  7 років тому

      No. I used hardi backer in that video. I did not want to create humps so I taped and then just used the membrane. If I was using durock then i would tape and then apply thinset, then the membrane.

  • @aportman58
    @aportman58 6 років тому +1

    So, it's okay to use cement board tape to also go over sheetrock portion when joining cement backer board (Durock or Hardi)? Also, did you say you let your Durock run past or beyond where tiling stops-ends, or sheetrock to extend under edge of end (bullnose) tiles? Thank you! Great videos!

    • @SoThatsHowYouDoThat
      @SoThatsHowYouDoThat  6 років тому +1

      Yes you can use tape. You can end the cement board just short of the tile. It really doesn't as long ad you paint membrane over the areas that the tile covers.

    If I bring tile all the way to corner do I just tape and mud the corner, or install the metal bead and tile over that? Also can I use setting compound or what kind of joint compound? USG Durock's limitations state: "Do not use lightweight setting-type joint compounds or ready-mix joint compounds directly over USG Durock® cement board." Also what kind of tape where the cement board meets drywall, cement board or green board tape?

    I've been watching your videos for a while before I started doing my bathroom reno. I'm at the point where I installed my corner bead and one corner is hardibacker and the other corner is drywall. the drywall side feathered out perfect since the drywall is thinner on the edge for the tape/corner bead. The hardibacker of course isn't thinner on the edge so I'm trying to feather out that side with lots of mud. It's still not feathered out right as I see a gap between the tile and hardibacker. Should I feather out again with thinset or keep going with mud?

    • @SoThatsHowYouDoThat
      @SoThatsHowYouDoThat  5 років тому

      It just won't look as good once you paint thinset you'll be able to tell that it wasn't finished off very smoothly I mean you can give it a try if you want I'm just saying that you can't stand it down smooth like you can with sheetrock joint compound so you can see the thinset underneath the paint once it's painted
