Siskel and Ebert review "TRON" - From "Sneak Previews" July 8, 1982

- This is a segment from Episode 437 of Sneak Previews, released on July 8, 1982, from PBS affiliate WTTW Chicago station.
In the full episode, they also reviewed "The Secret of NIMH", "The Devil's Playground", and "Gregory's Girl".
Since this episode, Roger Ebert would still hold an appreciation for TRON, rating it 4 out of 4 stars for his newspaper column on the Chicago Sun-Times, recommending the film on Siskel and Ebert's video pick of the week in 1993, and would also later finish his first annual Ebertfest (which back then was originally called The Overlooked Film Festival) in 1999 with a showing of TRON, presented in its original 70mm format, which was then followed by an interview with director Steven Lisberger and Actor David Warner, who played SARK in the film.

I never noticed this before, but the audio quality on this preview version of Tron makes it noticeable: The MCP is voiced by David Warner.

I’m actually pleasantly surprised they both loved this movie as much as they did. I had thought the lack of character depth would’ve been a focal point. Thankfully, they were caught in the magic of the grid!
Reviewers like things they haven't seen before. Sometimes they miss movies the public liked because they felt a popular movie was done before or derivative.
Gene also loved the film just as much as Roger did...Gene gave the movie a 4 star review in his original Chicago Tribune review...
TRON is one of those rare films that appeals to multiple generations. You don't have to know a bunch about video games or "techno-babble" to enjoy the story, or its characters. The sequel is great in its own right too, but the original is a classic. Point of fact: the film was actually excluded from the Oscars' nominations in 1982, because the voting members said the production "cheated by using computers". To that end, I'd have retorted with "Haave you seen Star Trek or Star Wars? They didn't rely exclusively on models either."
One of my viewing goals is to see _TRON_ in 70mm.

Tron is BY FAR the most underrated movie of all time.
And thanks to Tron we have the CGI animation of today.

"Underrated" is the most overused word on UA-cam comments. It's usually always untrue about a movie or actor (who probably has Emmy or Oscar nominations) as it is in this case as it's considered a classic, and got a sequel. They also never say who is underrating them. Sounds like jibber-jabber, a troll's term or A.I. to get attention.
It’s amusing to hear all that extra tank crew dialogue. Glad it was ultimately cut.
And good thing they reworked Master Control's voice.

I've been going through the S & E Sneak Previews and this clip was wonderful to see immediately after their review of The Black Hole. In that, they bemoan that Disney apparently could not make innovative films anymore. With that in mind, it was a delight to see them gush about Tron, the most innovative film Disney made under the leadership of Ron Miller before Eisner and Katzenberg took over. I wrote in TV Tropes that the most awesome thing is that, Post-Walt, Disney finally found the guts to take a gamble with this film with undreamed of visuals, and, win or lose in the box office in the short-term, it was a chance worth taking.
Hard to believe Tron is 40 years old this year.
Watched Tron many times, I remember my friend and I getting a kick out of the Japanese names several minutes into the end credits. :-)
Ah, Siskel & Ebert (R.I.P.). No one knew movies like they did.
And they're right about Disney films in those days just before _TRON_ and their other two PG-rated films that followed, mainly just a bunch of awful _Love Bug_ sequels that were much worse than even the usual banality of bad rinse-n'-repeat franchise-milking sequels, flopping again and again in about every way a movie could flop. _TRON_ was a (cyber)universe of relief from that downward trend, and the start of a good new thing (before stopping after two more quite non-"Disney" great PG-rated films) for Disney, and for a viewing audience that Disney usually didn't get otherwise.

Thanks a bunch for posting this! Just after getting home from school in the early-80s, I'd always tune-in to my local PBS affiliate to watch and hear Siskel & Ebert on _Sneak Previews_ / _At the Movies_ . And whether I agreed or disagreed with one or the other or both or neither, they always had something interesting and informative to say about the interesting subject of (the latest) movies. Again: thanks very much for posting this!
Agreed about the Disney movies prior to Tron during the 70s, except for The Black Hole which was one of my favorites as a kid.
Funny, I was looking at Disney live-action movies of the 1970s leading up to _Tron_ and the Herbie/Love Bug series was one of their modest successes, with even _Herbie Goes Bananas (1980)_ making money if it's true its budget was $5 million, though that one may have bombed. Other movies you might have heard of were _Escape to Witch Mountain (1975)_ and _Freaky Friday (1976)._ But for the most part live action was as they described, with titles I don't even recognize.
What's interesting is that Disney didn't want to do _Secret of NIMH (1982),_ so voice actors and animators defected to make it for Don Bluth and released by MGM/UA. It was a success, but competing against _E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial_ it wasn't a blockbuster, and later made some more money on home video and cable.

I can't believe Siskel & Ebert would hate on such an amazing feat of 80s technology and.....oh, wait? They actually both loved it? Ok, nevermind then!
The Academy Awards weren't fans either.. they saw it that they 'cheated' by using cgi.... oh how the times has changed!
I received this movie on Blu Ray this Christmas (I asked for it) I never saw it before. It was just one of those movies I didn't go see as a kid so I figured I better get it. The disc was cheap. I found the story a little silly but the visuals are great. Even 40 years later it is great eye candy on the TV. Thumbs up. And Cindy Morgan is so pretty.
The big question is what exactly was the Grid? It wasn't really the actual physical interior of the computer. Was it a simulation of some kind? Or was it how programs, portrayed as conscious beings in Tron, perceived their universe just as humans (who I suppose are much larger programs) do ours?
The filosophy of the movie was: 'how does the world inside the computer look like? If so.. how do programs look like?' Their take on it was that the world inside the computer was dark, only illuminated by the programs that inhabited it and the various buildings they 'lived in'.
At the time, the Grid could have been encompassed by the term "cyberspace," still a pretty good catch-all to describe Tron's setting. It obviously had multiple inputs into gaming arenas, suggesting a first-generation Internet secretly connecting what users always took as stand-alone video game consoles -- a realm explicitly depicted in "Wreck-It Ralph."

Flynn = Han Solo
Yori = Princess Leia
Bit = R2-D2
Dumont = Obi-Wan Kenobi
Sark = Darth Vader
MCP = Emperor Palpatine
They are both based on "Hero with a thousand faces" by Joseph Campbell...Lucas was Campbells best student from what ive heard.
That audio for MCP...was really weird.....NOT RIGHT.

That's David Warner's voice run through synthesizers to sound like the Master Control Program (MCP); he's the actor that plays ZARK in cyberspace and Ed Dillinger in the real world.
@@codeoptimizationware2803 Yeah, but here they've done the modulation completely differently than what ended up in the final cut.
@@Grim2 yeah, many of the trailers and promotional material used early cut versions... because production was very slow because of the tedious work required fo the backlight processing.
Tron had stunning visual effects at that time. However, the screenplay was mediocre.
I love Tron but after about an hour it starts to hurt my eyes.
