I’m actually on track to become a forensic pathologist who performs autopsies. I have attended ten of them varying in age and manner of death and each one has a different story to tell. It’s a very rewarding job in my opinion to give closure to families in their time of grief or to help in a homicide investigation. Now yes, they are smelly and at some points unsettling, but so is many other jobs. Now I can’t speak for a mortician because that is a separate job dealing with the funeral home but I believe they are very proud of their jobs.

I’m a Mortuary Student and there’s a lot of inaccuracies here. 1. People don’t become coroners because they “have to” it’s an art to a lot of them and to imply that someone has to do it is offensive. 2. We always try to present the body of the family wants it. No matter how much the body is decomposed or how much trauma they have. 3 I want to make it very clear people who are morticians will do the autopsies and we don’t. We just prepare the body for burial. A coroner and a mortician are different.
The one truthful thing in this video is the hardest part of the job is seeing someone you know. Especially when you don’t expect to see them because they were young and healthy. A lot of the terms were correct but they should have had someone in the industry go over their mistakes before posting them.

My dad and my younger adult brother passed w/in seven months of each other. We are eternally grateful for the services of the dedicated staff at the funeral home(the mortician knew both my dad and my brother..my brother was 28 when he died after a sudden illness, and when they came to pick up his body, the mortician himself wept). They treated them both with tender care, and did an amazing job on both of them. I can't say enough about how much they helped us in our time of grief.

My great great grandfather was an EMT during WWI. He told my great grandma during one of his shifts, he and his partner picked up a deceased soldier. The soldier had sustained a wound to his torso that was so large, you could see right through him. As they were driving, the body snapped right up into a sitting position, eyes wide open and unseeing. They nearly got into a car accident from being so startled! They had to pull over and lay the soldier down. It wasn't easy since the body had gone completely stiff, so they pretty much had to break the bones in the solder's body to get him lying down again. That story used to give me nightmares as a kid.

Part of my second job when I was 17 was transporting dead patients to the morgue in Sai t Joseph's hospital in Atlanta. I haven't gone into mortuary science but I studied with a lot of mort sci people when I was at university, and even considered going into the field myself. I think that it takes a certain type of personality to do the work; you have to be able to separate the person from the human and look solely at the biology and practice involved. It becomes significantly harder if it's a young child or baby involved, but other than that it's a really rewarding line of work from what I hear.

Not as many people specifically want to be a mortician with no prior exposure to it. That’s at least how it works mainly in eastern Canada!

As a Mortuary Student and Funeral Professional, the reason I do what I do is because I have a lot of empathy and am no stranger to loss and grief. I’ve been able to use my experiences to connect with the bereaved and serve my community by transporting and handling the remains of every single individual with dignity, honor and respect. It all comes from a place of compassion, which is vital. The ancient practice and necessity of death care is an honorable job that is mostly misunderstood by a lot of people. I was in that category until I started working in the field. Now my views on death, dying, grief and biological factors have become different in their perceptions from what they once were

I grew up and live on a soft/hardwood tree farm and recently we almost had a potential logging accident occur on our land. One of our logger's flipped their multi-tonne 15+ ft tall machine over on its side (keep in mind this man is 89 years old) and I watched it happen from my kitchen window. Don't ask me how he was able to turn off the machine and climbed out with nothing more than a bruise on his arm, especially considering he wasn't wearing a seat belt. The logging industry has one of the highest risks of accidental fatality and I've got mad respect for those in the industry
