As an Australian looking to retire overseas to enjoy a simpler, more traditional lifestyle, Italy ended up on my short list. I visited Spain and Portugal last year to explore those countries, and whilst I have not yet visited Italy, that will be my objective this year. Over the last couple of years I have spent time confirming the viability of a move such as this, and for me it is about leaving the hustle and bustle behind, making an informed decision that will allow me to enjoy my later years. If it happens that this is in a smaller community, that would be a good thing.
I must confess that it has long fascinated me that people can visit another country and complain that the food is different, the language is different, the transport is different, the weather is different, and as for the Italian bureaucracy - well !! . In a world with internet, I cannot understand this, but I guess that is the way of things sometimes.
Anyways, it is always helpful to gain insights such as you have presented as this forms a part of the formulae to determine the viability of moving OS, and I have always found your property viewings insightful, thank you both.

The gaslighting on those people's parts is astounding. It's not your fault someone else's business isn't open. It's up to us as viewers and purchasers to do our own research. If someone's on your page thinking you are holding their hand through their own processes, they are in the wrong place. Bless both of you for doing what you do for us. We appreciate you every day! The every day living experiences that you teach us are priceless!

Understand perfectly. Things are the same in my country, Argentina. Life in Big cities is completely different than Life in small towns. We, Argentina are italians who speak spanish. Most of us come from italian families. We are very similar

What’s your asking people to do is have manners. That’s a big ask of some people these days, but mother nature is teaching us all that she’s in charge.
I wish I had the money to come to Italy and live, but I don’t, but if I did, I would be polite and patient

I bought a small townhome in a small town in France last year. Life in my pied a terre is calm and quiet, peaceful, and lovely. I love the large cities but I can hop on a train to Paris and get my crowded tourist fix every now and then. I prefer the slower pace and find it deeply relaxing after the bustle of travel, hassle of traffic, hustle of the USA (I live in Houston)…. And it’s close to towns like Poitiers, Limoges, Angouleme, and Bordeaux, so in any direction I have major shopping and restaurants and busier metropolitan areas.

Wife and I have been thinking about moving there for about a year. Just by doing a little research, watching your videos, and others we have narrowed down our choice quite a bit. Less than 20,000 for the tax break, relatively flat, automobile accommodating, basic amenities, and a close by large town (45 mi). We’re pretty sure it’s going to be Angone. Especially liked when you and Aiden commented that you really liked the town. Best wishes keep up the good work.

When I moved to Germany with my soldier hubs back in the 90's, we were told that we were representing the US and to behave accordingly. Also, if you want to live like you're still in your home country, why not just stay there ?

Imagine screwing over someone in a small Italian town, moving in and supposing there's not going to be consequences. I'm suffering from second hand cringe thousands of miles away. And my goodness, if I'm visiting to buy a property, I'm going to slate a minimum of several weeks per region.

It is so disappointing to hear of poor behaviour and unrealistic expectations. I'd love to live in Italy for some part of each year and realise that it would be very different (which is why I'd do it)! When you show properties on your channel on an overcast day or in winter, I do appreciate it because everything looks good in sunshine, and that's not real life. Excellent tutorial, guys ❤

Thank you for inviting us into your home today. I appreciate you sharing things we need to know. One thing we didn't realize is that most people are working 6 day weeks. That explains so much about why the time of day works the way it does. Bosses in the US are very demanding of time and energy and they don't always pay people for their time. It is one of the worst parts of corporate greed we experience on a daily basis.

I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that many people have had totally unrealistic expectations! I'm not really that surprised, having worked in customer care for many years. Just when you think you've seen or heard it all, something pops up that shocks you, and you think what on earth are they on? Where I live, a small town in Germany, smaller shops often close for lunch, shops are not open on Sundays, and on Saturdays many close at 1 or 2 in the afternoon.

Very good talk! Two points, you always find what you are looking for, second if you are expecting everything to be the same as in your old country, than it's best you never move. I'd move to Italy because it is different, not necessary better or worse, just different. BTW, it's cruel to eat the delicious, Italian pastry while talking to us :)

I’m just “heading” home after a month in Italy. I toured some properties in Molise. I thought I’d love it and I was right. I stayed in Pescara and really didn’t like it. I’m a country person. I like the quiet. Just none of the houses were “right “
Btw-I started communicating with the realtors 2 weeks before I left and then viewed houses 3 weeks after I landed.

Great topic! Travelers need to do their homework. Even with preparation things change and a good traveler needs to be able to adapt.
Same goes for relocating to another country, “it’s another country” that’s the whole point, and things will be done differently.

We loved the slow pace of the small Italian towns, Rome, Florence etc didn’t really excite us it was the towns, the people are amazing. I found the Italian people have a very similar sense of humour to us here in Australia. Oh yes it sure gets cold in Italy. We loved country Italy but we also live in a tiny town (300 people) in Australia.

Expectations and entitlement, those are the two things which should be taken into account. Decades ago, I had the fortune of living in Italy (as US military and then as civilian) for a bit. I LOVED it from the very first moment, felt right at home. But I had no expectation of Italy being anything other than a layering of extremely old cultures. Italians were so incredibly welcoming and understanding as I barely stumbled through grocery shopping in very inadequate Italian or asked endless questions about everything. Now, I'm trying to make my way back "home" for my 'golden years' (and introducing my adult children to the country I've spoken of for so long), and the only thing I'm having trouble with is the bureaucracy of visas! lol

Aggressive drivers---and yes sometimes even rude and dangerous---the worst tailgaters! One needs patience on the road, and have your toll payment form ready when on the highways, prepare for roundabouts on all the smaller roads. Surprisingly, I found driving in Rome not so bad.

Hi guys. Love your channel BTW 😊 I hate that there are so many ignorant, arrogant, entitled idiots coming to Italy that you need to actually address these issues they create. I’m a first gen Australian born Croatian that will be retiring in Italy in the next 3 years and I hope to hell by the time I get there they will either grow a brain or go home!!! Having said that, I understand that it’s hard for non European people to fit into the European lifestyle but maybe they should do some vacation time through Italy to see if that lifestyle something they can cope with. Otherwise…… I guess they can just sell up and go home. Keep up the awesome work, guys and try to ignore the ignorant 😝 Lotsa love, Kate 💖
