  • Today was a big day. It might not represent the match for the Auld Mug itself but today was the first time we have seen teams race against each other in formal racing. And while it didn't count for points when it comes to the Cup itself, try telling that to the teams and sailors that have spent years working towards this point.
    Matt Sheahan was there to report first hand on what happened.

    Dear Matt, thank you for the great coverage and guidance of this pinnacle of the sailing sport. The knowledge and network you have amongst the teams is impressive in these episodes. Your “pre-starts” over the last few months have been flawless. The explanation, review, summary and interviews of the real racing adds a lot of much value. Keep up the good work. Thank you from the low lands!

    Great to see racing at last. My biggest disappointments are that the race courses seem artificially too narrow again to allow decent separation and/or tacking duals. This makes passing less likely so the start becomes more critical, but then they've made the start only 2min, giving teams very little time to engage in a potentially decisive pre race.

    • @irtnyc
      @irtnyc 20 днів тому +2

      Agree. The race courses are BS and have been for years now. The constraints make the entire thing more predictable and especially easier to film and broadcast, but fundamentally each race is MUCH less interesting... boring even... and the true "drama" only builds over the duration of the very long cup series.
      (Oracle vs NZ in San Francisco being the best example where each race was generally boring to watch but the final outcome and cumulative drama were extraordinary -- certainly unrivalled by anything since in my opinion.)

    Matt, wonderful summary. It would be great to see and hear a discussion at prestart tactics for AC 75s as might different from the displacement monohulls of old. Maybe this could b a discussion for your "Five Minute Warning" blog.

    Awesome summary of the days events. A shame the race between the Kiwis & the Italians was ended by a malfunction for the Italians. I believe they are going to be the star performers. Exciting times ahead. John from New Zealand.

    It seems funny that there is no Australia boat. No Spithill on America, and Slingsby is? That is a change in fortunes for sure.

    I’m surprised by the French admitting they don’t have a feel for boat handling in pre-start yet. This explains the gaffs, but also suggests they will have a difficult and clumsy regatta.

    • @Gefionius
      @Gefionius 20 днів тому +1

      I’m would think you would need hundreds of hours on the water to be competitive, running a prelim regatta just won’t be enough.

      They were shockingly bad in the prestarts. They crossed the boundary by a long way. Hard to see them winning a race if they keep starting so far behind

    no one has commented on American Magic running out of juicy at the 1st mark and not having enough power to trim efficiently. Could it be that the recumbant cyclors can't peak as much as the traditional cyclors?

      American Magic managed the lead well and tactically they were in the perfect spot to lay the first rounding. But at the same time Ainsley was frustrated about not having enough horse power (his term) to keep pace. Ineos may have built themselves a slow boat again. We will see.

    • @lawrencefalk8714

      @@waveland I was surprised Ainsley used the 'horse power' term. At least on TV, I thought it was more a case of missing shifts & more tacks not necessarily a slow boat, but time will give us the answers!

      @@TT-bs2vm That is an extraordinary claim. 5 consecutive olympic medals, 4 gold and a silver in Atlanta - when he was just 18 yrs old. In the AC, he was a major factor in Oracle's recovery in 2013... admittedly the Oracle boat was clearly getting a lot faster, once they switched the computers off. But still.
      Now if your assertion is about his ability to lead a team, or to design a groundbreaking design to do what has never been done before, you may have a good point. These boats are just breathtaking, aren't they?
      But is Ainslie a good helm? Take a breath and count to 5 again.

      I predicted that Ineos would be slow the moment she was unveiled: the bustle much chunkier than the others. Significantly more windage than the others, which can’t be good for upwind performance. But it seems that the crucial factor is maneuverability and staying on the foils. Ineos seems no better than average at these aspects.

    This is a great summary; unfortunately it’s lost in the tech and expense.
    The event for me was much better when countries competed against each other with their own countrymen.
    The AC boats of today basically screen out most countries from participating.
    It’s a shame as this was a premier regatta in the heyday. When other nations were excited about participation.

    Did anyone really think Alinghi would be weaker than Orient? Great appreciation of the IB AM match first beat but I saw IB not up to full speed at the start, due to having been a little too advanced. AM bouncing them was where the match was won, despite IB getting that first cross.

    • @charleswalters6064
      @charleswalters6064 20 днів тому

      I suspect that Orient are very fast. They didn't lose as much from the behind position as you would expect for much of the race; although Alinghi could have been sandbagging at that point. Also, I think IB went for the wrong genoa - the data pointed to IB having a higher top speed, but being slower out of manoeuvres (it's going to be more complex than that, but a bigger genoa would = more horsepower = better performance in a close match with lots of tacks).

    • @patjolly
      @patjolly 20 днів тому

      @@charleswalters6064 boat alone same speed as Emirates but time on the water and everything else means "weaker" in my mind. I think we will all be amazed at how close the boats are around the course, given variety of design. I don't think IB were slow, just that error off the line which allowed AM to bounce them

    • @charleswalters6064
      @charleswalters6064 20 днів тому

      @@patjolly I'm sure you are right about speed. Not sure that there was an error off the line - IB crossed ahead at the 1st intersection. Perhaps they should have defended the right more aggressively - but I am sure we will see all teams dial in more accurately as a result of the next few days.
