"Fatty Christmas" is a total FAIL...no one in the Hollar household has put on a single ounce!!!!! LOL You guys ROCK this channel. Thank you so much for sharing.
You should plant a climbing rose under that clothesline...train it to climb on the clothesline. I love your ideas for planting trees! You are developing new ecoenvironments with each successful planting!
I really enjoy seeing all of the green there and your sons barefoot. We are buried in snow. More snow, 6-8 inches coming tomorrow and our Temps are barely over zero...lows below zero. Windchill will be up to -35 or more these next few days. Enjoy your warm weather while you have it. Merry Christmas to you all, Hollar family.
Hi beautiful Hollars Great job with the new trees - hope your neighbor gets inspired and stops that spraying of chemicals. Just got a glimpse of the old farm building. Hopefully you guys one day in the not too distant future get to build you dream farm house. I 🙏🏻 that day will find you soon ✨ greetings from Denmark 🇩🇰
Worked for an electric coop for years. Them trimming the trees that overgrown the lines depends on whether it is the line that goes to your house or if it is a main line going to multiple homes. If it is only to your home you will have to trim them. What the power company will do is let you schedule a temporary turn off so you can safely trim or cut them down. The great things is that you are able to schedule a specific time for them to roll back the line and then you give them a call when you are ready to get them reconnected. If you decide you can remove them without having the lines removed and you have an oops that takes out the line you are usually liable for the repair costs. Good to check with your power company on their policy ahead of time. The farm I am moving to has serious overgrowth of the line going to my house which means one of the first things I will have to do is get my chain saw dusted off to remove over a dozen trees. Projects like that make me wish I had a Ben or boys still at home to do it. Can't wait to see all those chestnut trees growing.
Nice to know! We have a triangle of lines around 2 HUGE trees that we have to top and we've been nervous about the lines. That makes sense, thanks for sharing!
Another interesting video on the trees. I'm not sure which older son was helping, but I think he's going to be taller than you Dad. I've watched your family since California and how small and young the boys were, my how time flies. Wishing the Hollar family a Blessed Merry Christmas 🎄😊🇺🇲
Ben, your drive to build an Eden-like environment on the farm is fantastic. You have been developing a huge amount of knowledge about growing trees. Great job!!! Happy Holidays 🌲♥️
I love country kids going barefoot !! I lived in my skoolie for 2 years on 19 acres on my uncle’s land 2 years ago and I went barefoot all of the time!! Except the coldest of cold winter! That is a beautiful life!!! Yay on the trees and your beautiful compost and mulch ♥️♥️♥️
Love seeing the boys helping dad with the tree planting. They work so hard, no complaints at all. Hope you all have an amazing Christmas and an even better new year. Love and blessings Hollar family xjx
Hey Ben you need to add a vent hood over the stove so the grease and vapors from Megs awesome cooking to keep it from.clogging your ac unit.up and you will also need to add some low to the ground stuff so the Grayson won't float past the trees. Me and the wife binge watch you guys all the time.
You are so productive Ben! Love your ideas for a barrier. Its not only so useful, but it is ultimately going to be beautiful. In terms of barrier, a 180degree suggestion...since you are on grid, and power costs are going to shoot up soon, if not already, you may want to consider a projrct to underpin the house to insulate from heat loss. You may have repurposed products like cinder blocks on the property, to cut costs, but it might save you to close that in before deep winter. you can pretty it up next year w stucco or other products....suggestions from a single wide homeowner for 17 years, from Michigan originally, now in SE VA.
The orchard and tree line are truly going to be awesome when they are fully grown. Not sure how long it takes for the new trees to mature, but they will still be a good barrier while small.
I grew up a barefoot kid I could go in snow n run across sharp rocks.. it was so nice then I got some cancer on foot as adault so foot doctor had to cut off all my calis to operate.. I started this last summer building up calis again..ur family sure reminds me of my good ole days.. thanks for sharing..
I wondered about your neighbors place. Seems like if the farm looks like a golf course they are probably using chemicals. Great idea to plant a natural barrier to block the wind spread. I am learning a lot about trees. I like the way you plant yours with their long term effects in consideration. Happy Holidays, peace
💚 When you held up that leaf, I thought oak, tanbark oak (living here on Central California Coast)! That mycelium-rich compost will be wonderful for your young tree starts. I can picture your protective living wall on that ridge. 💚
My parents, and by osmosis, my brother and sister and me were BIG into reforestation of a 50-acre farm that my parents bought in approx. 1972. This was in mid-state Wisconsin. In the end, of the original 50-acre farm, seven acres were forested (nice Oak grove) - we then planted around 30 more acres of trees(primarily conifers but also many Black Walnut and many more hardwood cherry - I forget the name). Every spring and fall, on every weekend, we would be out there working hard. It was great fun! Long story short, I took my children to see the results and it was always fun. Many of those trees are now in excess of 80-FT tall! Now - the part you should contemplate... My Mom had an obsession with "American Chestnut" trees. In fact, after she and my Dad bought hundreds of Chestnut trees over many years, the local farm bureau people annointed my Mom as the Chestnut Lady. As a result, every Spring (I think it was Spring - but it might have been Fall instead...) they would then GIVE her and my Dad the Chestnut trees. In the end, she would get inquiries from all over requesting Chestnut trees. They would, then, go dig up the 2-3 year old saplings and mail them to wherever. Often times, people would come to their farm and dig up the trees. Sadly, I do not think that even ONE Chestnut tree ever survived. They all died of the Chestnut Blight. Every time I would haul the children back to Wisconsin to visit, we would be out there dropping another dead Chestnut tree or three. This is my way of telling you that even though I completely respect what you are trying to do, I think you should be aware that keeping Chestnut trees alive is nigh on impossible. My suggestion (for your "barrier") would be something conifer-ish. My best wishes.
I am also slightly obsessed with American chestnut trees but I haven’t been able to source any. I’ve researched the subject a lot and will probably plant a bunch. The Chinese chestnut is resistant to blight so that’s why I’m planting them. This is only the beginning of my tree planting madness and this hill will get many many more trees planted as to block blowing chemicals.
When you said planting the trees out of the water reminded of what my late father said. When we planted his fruit orchard. He said plant them high because they don't like wet feet.
I love how you placed the trees on the ridge!!! I expect your theory and experiment to grow and reward you exponentially! I admire your passion of returning to basics. It's the way I am too. People tell me to grow things a certain way, and I argue "But nature doesn't do that, so why should I?" and they know they've lost the battle. My ORGANIC home quality will always win over commercialized and mass produced.
Nfn but I may even plant more Juniper around your border because they spread out and can absorb that spray so it doesn’t spread to your food. Def spiked the 👍🏾 as usual and praying for the Hollers and all the folks who enjoy them as well.
The term 'riparian barrier' refers to plant barriers or buffer zones that are near rivers or waterways. You may prefer terms like 'landscaping barrier' or 'property line buffer' for this type of planting. What a great plan!
He should have planted more Junipers since they can act as a windscreen. Those oak and chestnut trees will not block anything coming off his neighbor's field.
Another great video of family & working together in harmony. Also good to see the boys go barefoot. We recently had a big winter storm here at South Dakota & it was the worst in the history of south dakota. Luckily we all survived & there's another predicted bad blizzard on the way. We will survive that too. Take care. Merry Christmas to you & your great family. Peace & Love.
Ben, check in with Danny King at Deep South Homestead about Grazon, he can tell you all about the pros & cons with Grazon. He's had quite a time with it! Best of luck with your trees!
I left a 5 gallon bucket of walnuts in my storage shed waiting until I had time to process them...squirrels got in and had a party. There's maybe a gallon left and hulls EVERYWHERE.
Ben, Since your neighbor uses spray in his pasture, will you use some kind of shield to protect your newly planted trees? We have a couple of young fruit trees we used straw, woodchips and a plastic barrel with slits cut into sides as vents...our former neighbor use to spray and the residual always carried over to us...barrel is just for our winter but the trees were @12" tall and when we last measured they were up to 19"...trying to put up trees to help the deer & turkeys find food source since the development issues around us are out of control...Cheers from Maine.
Neighbors spraying can be dangerous to your livestock. My grandparents had a large dairy farm in Mi. A neighbor sprayed his farm with something. It became airborne, and ended up contaminating my grandparent’s pasture. The local dairy would no longer purchase the milk, so my grandparents had to continue milking and then dumping the milk. It was heartbreaking for them, as well hurt them financially.
Thank you! Trees rule the Earth. Ha, I only got to plant five this year. This compost business is the bomb and the tonic. Thank you for sharing with my wish this be the new way. PLANT TREES PEOPLE.
Yay, getting some trees planted. That's too bad that your neighbor sprays their land. I'm glad the squirrel didn't find all the chestnut oak sprouts. Nice planting method. Nice, the wood chips had mycelium in them! I sure hope those trees take off next Spring. Thanks for this Hollar family! Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
the boys may not be proud now but some day they will be able to tell their own kids how they helped you build up your homestead and they will be proud for sure

We all burn too many calories working and running 😂
That’s for sure❤
We ran trails of mulch from one tree to the next so the mycelium could communicate between them. 😁
Merry Christmas! I hope the upcoming year is a good one for your family.
I know you had fun playing with those big toys
You should plant a climbing rose under that clothesline...train it to climb on the clothesline. I love your ideas for planting trees! You are developing new ecoenvironments with each successful planting!

Hi.... Meg and Ben nice to see you, thank you for showing your video homestead 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 👕🐔🐓🐣🐥🐈🐄🐖🌱🌺🌹🌻🌼🌸🌷🏡🎥👍👍👍

I love the boys not wearing shoes ,, I grew up just like that in Okla !!!
Ben, your drive to build an Eden-like environment on the farm is fantastic. You have been developing a huge amount of knowledge about growing trees. Great job!!! Happy Holidays 🌲♥️
One nice thing about juniper is that they are generally tough. Do consider pruning then propagating a little bit.
One perk for using compost from the forest is that if all goes well, the compost will generate heat for the plant.
Wow, I’m hoping these trees take off with fantastic growth. Great video
Thank you for filming on your day off! That's a very interesting observation on the soil biology. I can't wait to see how it turns out!
Another beautiful, productive and informative day. ❤
Love seeing the boys helping dad with the tree planting. They work so hard, no complaints at all. Hope you all have an amazing Christmas and an even better new year. Love and blessings Hollar family xjx
Cedar is really nice for privacy, wind /snow break, great for dust you name it and they are not expensive.

Because of you and your family I'm going to start an orchard next year I live in northern Idaho and I've been talking with the tree folks you use
When you said planting the trees out of the water reminded of what my late father said. When we planted his fruit orchard. He said plant them high because they don't like wet feet.
I should send you some of my acorns from Maine. We have towering oaks here
I love how you placed the trees on the ridge!!! I expect your theory and experiment to grow and reward you exponentially! I admire your passion of returning to basics. It's the way I am too. That will be so beautiful once the trees are established.
If your going to work in the dirt take Buggy with you, you can't deprive her of her fun. Lol.❤❤❤❤
So weird since it is minus 1 here and tonight minus 16 and you have green grass!!
Nfn but I may even plant more Juniper around your border because they spread out and can absorb that spray so it doesn’t spread to your food.

FYI Gold Shaw Farms raises Chestnut Trees. I know you know Morgan. Looks Great Peace from WV

Do the barriers for waterways act to lower the amount of toxins headed toward the water ways?

Tell that child he's no longer in Cali- no bare feet in December....lol
Hahaha...I don't know how those boys do it. Granted I am a tenderfoot though..lol
Best get some deer and rabbit protection around those tender seedlings!

Hi beautiful people big hugs to you all ❤❤
the boys may not be proud now but some day they will be able to tell their own kids how they helped you build up your homestead and they will be proud for sure
Plant lavender near the clothes line. You can put your sheets on the plants to dry in the summer.
Nothing better.
Man that was totally satisfying to watch! That is always such a good feeling, thanks for sharing.
Merry Christmas to you and your family. Hope for the coming New Year. Blessing from our heavenly Father.
Your kids are always such good helpers. There going to have so much knowledge as they grow up. Nancy from nebraska

That will be a lovely chestnut tree barrier one day. Good work Ben and boys. Merry Christmas 🎄💞🎄☃️🎄🎅🎄
Sun is out so good for the Soal 😀
Love those trees! Blessings Abound.

My favorite TV show ❤️
What a lovely video, I really enjoyed it! 👍
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and Meg, your handsome sons, and your adorable baby girl! Wishing you lots of wonderful gardening in 2023! ❤️
Broadleaf herbicide could burn your trees, too. Be sure to water the trees with overhead sprinkling when they spray and that will help.
Thanks Ben and the boy's It looks great and will help with erosion 👍💕🙏
There used to be a whole string of Chestnuts along the Champs Elysees...so...yeah, Chestnuts and oaks along a driveway...niiice. Classy, even.
Good job guys
Definitely a beautiful day, and you folks have a incredible view. Be free, be wild and let the grass grow between your toes. Blessings guys from VA ❤️
Ps, it's been a fall for acorns here at this 1924 vintage rental homestead. Unfortunately the loggers have taken allot of trees down in our area. They have taken allot of habitat from our wild birds and 🦌
Just a heads-up: I had no idea that acorns were poisonous to dogs and some wildlife until I looked it up after our youngest Pomeranian started eating them. Be sure you check the varieties and the animals that can't eat them before you let them forage there.
We had the exact same thing happen to chestnuts we planted in pots. Did even think about squirrels! It ate every last one. Talk about a nice snack. 🙄
Ben, Morgan over at Gold Shaw Farm sells chestnut tree starts. He lives in Vermont. I think if you want anymore trees, he may be a good source.
Gotta love our NC weather spring is our winter on the EAST COAST LINE crazy weather ya be safe
Great video!
would elderberries a good idea to plant, they are so easy to propagate and they grow very fast and you can use the flowers berries.. you name it
Nice video 🩵👍🌲🙋♂️ MERRY CHRISTMAS
Hoodie on but barefoot... 😂
Love the homestead life❤️
I wonder if y'all could find a way to help Jason with your tractor on the day he gets his feet delivered. Or if y'all might even be able to go in together on your bulk orders of feed for the chickens and pigs....
There's an old saying that you dig a $10 hole to plant a $5 tree.
Great experiment! I’ll be watching.
