Hello, just want to thank you. And tell you it have taken me a few years to recognize GTV as a genuine channel for it's own, not another random retro/nippon channel. I'm a subscriber since a few months, I really enjoy your way of explain and edit, apart from the breaks in the middle of the videos.
That was really interesting. Very nice-looking, well-designed bills. It is nice to see doctors and educators being honored. What about coins? Are there coins still in use in Japan? How do they look? A sequel to this video is required. Thank you very much!
@GimblyGFR yes! We are being killed by inflation!! I was looking back at some pictures from the first weekend I was here and one was a McDonald’s menu and a Big Mac set was ¥580! And it was ¥590 until 2019! ¥10 in like 20+ years! Then in 2019 Japan installed a 10% sales tax! Then in 2021, some idiot in US leadership stopped the production of American oil, because of the hoax of global warming, which forced the price of oil exports, which Japan needs, to go insanely high and raised the price of everything! Then the value of the yen fell in 2023 to half of what what was worth 10 years before, raising everything again!! Now it’s ¥750 for that same Big Mac set! Or 650 if you order between 10-2 on weekdays!
@@GTV-Japan Inflation is a problem in most countries nowadays, and I'm sad to read that Japan is no exception. If my math is correct, you're talking about an inflation rate of around 27%. If it serves as any consolation, we had nearly 250% in the last 12 months. I cannot buy a Big Mac at all. It is a luxury item for my income level.
@GimblyGFR geez o man!! The problem is that in Japan there has been literally zero inflation since the 70s. Not even the usual normal good kind where prices go up a little because everyone has money. If you watch the Sentai video I did I pointed out that a menu in 1982 is the same price in 2020 ! So while there’s less inflation than other countries. I don’t know the % but it feels much worse because it’s literally not happened in 50 years
Remember that when I went to study in Japan back in 2009, when I exchanged money in my country's bank they gave me a shit ton of 2000 bills, so whenever I had to pay, Japanese people looked slightly confused. Last time I visited in 2020, I still got some of these from my bank.
I still have several series E 2004 bills, but it's a relief to know that they will continue to remain in circulation and can still be used alongside the new series F 2024 bills.

Pretty cool to see the new ones and know who's on them. I had some English textbook when I was living in Japan that said Natsume Soseki was on one of the bills, and I'm pretty sure that was either a lie or ridiculously out of date.
I love the idea of putting Hokusai's art on the reverse, I wish they had done that for all of them and not just one! Not a fan of the huge size of the denomination, it looks way off-balance. Maybe it reflects Japan's aging population, in that it needs to be big for them to be able to read it?
The big numbers are for the visually impaired but also it’s to throw off the balance for counterfeiters and the numbers are filled with micro print so it does have a reason. It all looks off balance and you’d never make a painting that way for sure.
