That was wonderful! I haven't ever understood how the Art History brush could be used to such great effect before. Now I see how I can use it to create fine art with it. I have an archive of antique photos that I think will come to a new life with this technique. Thank you so much!
Thank you Helen. You have made a complicated technique very easy to understand in bite sized, thoughtful and informative chunks, you have given me the confidence to explore the brushes options and take my skills to another level.
Hey Michael, It is awesome to hear that you found this tutorial really easy to follow and hope that you have great fun putting these tips and techniques to use for your own creative projects :)
Subscribed and liked! I literally had no idea how to do this. And this is the easiest tutorial yet. Seriously can’t thank you enough. You’re also an amazing artist.

Thank you for your Comment Marilyn, We love hearing from our community and I have passed your request onto our Curation Team who will add this to our upcoming tutorials.
So glad that the UA-cam algorithm suggested your video. Thank you so much for explaining how to map the Art History Brush to the cropped image. Appreciated you taking to the building up process with the painted layers and the use of "opposition colors." Because this video so informative, I've subscribed to your channel to learn other types of digital design.
You are very welcome, Andre. We are so happy that you found us and We hope that you enjoy checking out our other tutorials and our live sessions with some of our most popular designers :).
Great tutorial, Helen. Like some others, I had a problem with the brush painting white on a new layer. I found that I had to make my snapshot from the flyout menu on the History panel, and change "From: Document" to "From: Merged Layers." I was then able to paint on a new layer on top of my photo. I also started with a raw image from Adobe Camera Raw, then converted that to 8-bit in Ps. After that, I created my snapshot. Hope this helps some others. Thank you.
We're really glad that you found this tutorial super helpful Eric and thanks so much for sharing your findings too, we hope that our community find this handy too!

Really fun and useful, but I must have done something wrong. I only get some sort of white paint though I tested with a colorful photo. And no details, even though I tried all sorts of sizes on the brush and the tolerance. Do you know what I might have missed?
Karin, I am not sure what is happening here but you aren't alone as I checked and some people have the same problem and I have been able to duplicate it on one of my images. A couple of things to check: check that you are using the Art History Brush and that, in the History panel that you have the Art History Brush icon to the immediate left of the original image or the cropped image. If neither work, (and I suspect they aren't the problem), I suggest you flatten your image to a single layer, save it (as a copy if you don't want to lose your layers), close the image and open the flattened image. Now add the new layer, and see if that works. I was able to go from white paint to painting in color this way so I hope it works for you?
I think the problem was that I used a raw-file, it works with a jpg. Though I really need a lot of practise, I have discovered :-) Thank you for the answer and for the tutorial, a really fun way to make something different in Photoshop!

Thank you for this, it was a lot of fun. I think my image was a bit dark and it got a tad muddy but a run through ACR in PS and it came out nicely. I too was having an issue with the white brushing. I figured I would follow along precisely and cropped my image (although I did not move the handles) and it worked as in the tutorial. I was using a raw image as well so maybe if I had of save it as a jpg first and then tried it would have been fine.

How do you fix it when you go to paint on the new layer and it paints white? I noticed one comment on this but his instructions on how to fix this problem were more confusing than the problem itself.
@@DesignCuts I wish there was a way to share the picture I painted with you. It’s a portrait of people so I used a different brush, but still I love how it turned out
@@DesignCuts I am also of the WOW opinion, thank you for this tutorial! Maybe you can help me solve this (user-based?) issue? I can't seem to get my art history brush to work. It says "Could not rasterize because the pixel data for this layer is not directly editable." I have the layer set up, the brush, and I get a circle with a line through it when I mouse over the layer and I get that message above when I click on it. Am sifting on the internet to find out a fix but so far no luck. Can you help?
