Luke Skywalker was so powerful that he was terrified of his own power. when he figured out while in a Jedi stasis he awoke in the middle of a fleet of Star Destroyers. he could sense every life aboard the Star Destroyers. He then figured out that he could snuff every single life just by thinking of it and it terrified him. He could kill over a million people just by thinking of it. If that's not ultimate power I don't know what you want.

That's why both Rey and Yoda are more powerful than Luke in Canon. After Episode IX, Canon becomes more like Legends, even though Rey is the one who does everything Luke did in the Expanded Universe.

However, because Yoda was able to hold back Darth Sidious' Force lightning, he is more powerful than Luke and Rey. Who doesn't like someone use such an awesome display of power, like the use of lightning?

Lukes' win over Vader, DOES technically have more to do with Vader being emotionally conflicted. Still it's impressive.
Exactly why he did not give him props for the duel in episode 6, but gave him even more props for the duel in Dark Empire. As much as I hate the basic premise of those books, Darth Sidious coming back, there is no doubt that that duel signified Luke as being a much much more powerful Jedi Knight than he was at the end of the originals. He was able to contend with Darth Sidious who had the knowledge and skills and experience of his old self, With a body that was physically the prime of Sidious. That's an amazing feat

It does not even remotely indicate that you are the most powerful/skilled Jedi: "Grand Master was a title bestowed on the oldest and wisest member of the Jedi Order" (Wookipedia). Windu was actually Master of the Order, which technically outranks Grandmaster, so if we're going by rank he's better than everyone on this list.

All you effectively did was say that I was wrong and you're right. Wookiepedia is just like Wikipedia: it is a fan edited page that cites credible sources. If you took the time to actually read any of their articles, you would know this.
And no, you're entirely mistaken, The Master of the Order is the elected leader of the entire Jedi Order (use common sense), whereas the Grandmaster is the leader of the Jedi Council. "The office of Master of the Order was distinct from the title of Grand Master, the holder of which chaired the High Council". This is sourced from the book "Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know".
Additionally, Yoda himself says, per the Databank (a canonical encyclopedia for Star Wars knowledge) that the rank of Grandmaster is a title "reserved for the oldest and wisest living Jedi Master". Nothing about being the most powerful, just age and wisdom.
If you have a superior source/sources and a counterargument that doesn't consist of "No, everything you say is wrong and everything I say is right", I'd love to continue the conversation. Until then, I'm going to operate under the assumption that you have no idea what you're talking about and are just another random YT commenter trying to start an argument.
P.S.: Just rewatched the video. I suggest you watch 2:14 to 2:24, in which the poster says, and I quote, Zym is "not only the weakest of the Jedi Grandmasters, but quite possibly one of the most pathetic masters the Order has ever produced". Needless to say, that statement in itself invalidates your entire argument about Grandmasters being the most powerful and skilled by default. And you think this guy, who gets 1 shotted by a no-name bounty hunter, is more powerful in the force than Mace Windu? Mace Windu, who killed the most famous and skilled bounty hunter in the galaxy (Jango Fett), and defeated Darth Sidious in a lightsaber duel? lol.
You forgot to mention that when Luke tricked the reborn Emperor into accepting him as his apprentice, he mastered most dark side abilities.

@Dragon50275 I disagree. I think Anakin had a profound and deep connection to the force. For example, look at the way he smashes Luke with objects during their duel in Cloud City in ESB. Even as a child he demonstrated his force power by being the only human who could pilot a pod racer. Isn't it Vader's strong connection to the dark side of the Force that allows him to live and exist in his horrible state, in his armor? Using pain, rage, and his connection to the dark side, to turn those things into pure power? Hell, now that I think about it, he caught Han Solo's blaster fire on his open hand in ESB....that's some force power if you ask me.
@Dragon50275 I don't think that's canon. Anakin was perhaps the Jedi Order's greatest duelist. In one on one combat he defeated Count Dooku, who was the greatest master of form 2(makashi) lightsaber combat who ever lived. When executing Order 66, he killed the Jedi master Cin Drallig in the Jedi Temple, arguably the greatest Jedi lightsaber master alive(besides Obi Wan). I don't really want to debate Obi Wan's mastery of Soresu, but he's simple invulnerable. No Jedi besides Anakin could do that without a strong, if not the strongest, connection to the force. Not to mention he broke from the darkside to kill the Emperor. Maybe I'm wrong. I often am. Perhaps we'll just have to agree to disagree.
@@starcontrol2 yeah man, Vader had lost most of his body, and therefore, lost a lot of his capacity to manipulate the force. Anakin was indeed powerfull and potentially the most powerfull ever, Vader was strong, but his potential was cut off when he lost to Kenobi. Anakin/Vader, is the most dramatic, powerfull and sad Arch of Star wars.

Even though they were never grand masters, it'd be interesting to see where Revan and Meetra Surik would place. Revan basically being the Old Republic's Luke, and Meetra mastering shatterpoint to the point where she could use it to break the natural flow of cause and effect.

I also got the feeling when reading the RoTS novelisation that Yoda could have beaten Sidious but he understood during their duel that the Jedi had already lost, they lost when they allowed themselves to become soldiers, and his killing of Sidious would be useless and would only serve to further taint the image of the Jedi in the eyes of the galaxy and risk his own fall to the dark side. Thus his retreat when he says “failed I have” he isn’t talking about his duel with Sidious but of his leadership of the Jedi during the clone wars

Satele was also extremely talented with force heal, being able to keep multiple people alive at once. As for her vs Yoda, I agree with you. They are my two favourite Jedi and whilst I think their battle would be long winded and she would get a few surprise strikes in at Yoda, ultimately he would win just due to his massive experience of the light side of the force. I imagine him and Satele would be the best of friends haha!

another reason luke deserves top billing is well yoda came in at the peak of the jedi order and led it to ruin due to his strict dogmatic views of the force and becoming a pawn of the republic. luke built his order up from pretty much nothing and fixed many issues with the old one

Rey convinces him that's bad.
Seemingly without difficulty he restores a connection to the force in a matter of days.
Luke, while being probably in his worst state, managed to create an inter-planetary ranged perfect force illusion for an extended period while also using the force to see exactly what is happening on the planet.
Pretty ridiculous, but not on par with him at his prime in any way.

HE DIDN'T DIE AFTER USING IT!

Broom so luke creepily lurked into kylos tent as an instinct? How does kylo have more darkness than vader who has killed far more people and done darker deeds. Striking back in anger after vader threatened luke is not the same as contemplating whether he should kill his nephew. Even for the briefest moment its an insult to his character not to mention turning on his lightsaber. Also this is grand master luke who is far more attuned in the light side of the force than the luke we saw in return of the jedi.
Canon Luke made no sense whatsoever. All thanks to Rian Johnson manipulated by Kathleen Kennedy. As long as he put Mary Sue Rey as a Grandmaster Jedi where she didn't even believe in the force a week earlier, completely destroying Luke and Leia's characters meant nothing to her.
Legends Luke is fucking ridiculously overpowered. He's that strong only because he's the hero and the hero always wins ans surpasses its opponents. This is complete bullshit made by fans who just wanted to make him stronger and stronger every time.

Abeloth was only "over a dozen times stronger" when a single statement was made in their many encounters. By the final battle where he was a grandmaster and followed her with krayt, battling her in that dark dimension (where she is the strongest she can be) and OVERPOWERING HER DIRECTLY WHILE SHE AND KRAYT WERE BOTH DRAINING LUKE'S POWER. This is impressive considering that Luke didnt have his lightsaber, and didnt use his light aura. He headlocked abeloth to where she was wailing in pain and fear, and kicked out Krayt's leg from under him and threatened him with the raging Abeloth. By the end of the EU, Luke had greatly surpassed Abeloth and was likely at the level of the Father
Yea no. Luke was never at any point stronger than Abeloth or the Father. I love Legends Luke but that just isn't true. The only reason why Luke and Krayt were able to beat her was because together they represented both Light and Dark (Daughter and Son basically), Krayt was Force draining Abeloth ( and Luke but not as much), and BECAUSE they were fighting her in the Force dimension THEY were both more powerful than usual AND were able to directly affect Abeloth's Force spirit in a way that was impossible in physical form. Both Luke and Krayt were basically prepared to die to kill her.

Just came back to this and what you tried to spin as fact is still astonishingly wrong. Lot of people clearly never read Legends books and have terrible memories. Luke was Grandmaster long before Abeloth took the stage. 1v1 Luke gets clowned by Abeloth. Talking about an entity that casually nukes cities with the Force, dominates planets with her mind, and threw off the Force net technique of hundreds to thousands of Sith and Nightsisters simultaneously killing them AND fighting off Luke, Ben, Darth Taalon ( Council level Sith Lord) and a strike team of Sith. Luke directly fights Abeloth at least 4 times and is near dead or easily defeated each time.

People forget that Jedi are people - with all their faults.Lightside heroes can and do dip into rage, passion, and hate, i.e. darkside all the time. That’s why Jedi continually preach to be mindful of their feelings, to recognize when base human emotion is getting the better of them.
All the same Obi beats Maul when he gives into his anger, and Luke does the same when he beats Vader. Lightside hero’s use the darkside often. It’s turning away from the path that’s key.
Oddly enough, all the Luke fanboys are having a hard on celebrating this nerfed up op books Luke are overlooking that Disney was actually closer to Lucas Luke than the books. Luke was always portrayed surpassing Vader, but not Palpatine. Return of the Jedi shows Luke Skywalker being fairly weaker than Yoda. Maybe Luke continued training under dead Yoda. Simple, I say being sarcastic asking a rhetorical question and basing my conclusion off canon work, not speculation or fan favorite books. Evidence of Luke being extremely vulnerable in return of the Jedi already proves the whole thing that Luke is stronger than Vader but weaker than Sideous, basically showing that Luke is weaker than Yoda with using the force. I like Luke and I understand that he is Vader’s son so he has to be powerful but the reason he is so great as a JGM is his rebuild of the “new jedi order” that changes the Jedi teachings once and for all and allowed for feelings like love to be not only a part of it but a great motivation for the light side!

You have to grain of salt that though. Most of this is based on EU/Legends, which goes kind off the rails a bit, especially where Luke (and other OT) characters' futures are concerned. Kind of like "power creep" in a video game.

While his fear of being responsible for another Vader is one thing, if you really look at his character during the original trilogy, while it is realistic to think he could make that mistake... that DOESN'T mean he would just decide, "oh... I screwed up. I guess I'll just go die and let the bad guys take over." Canon Luke is a complete and abject coward, pure and simple, who could not take responsibility for his mistakes... NOT a compelling case for the hero that stopped the Empire.
Not to mention that Luke ended up getting sucked into the whole sort of poorly written narrative that has plagued canon. Think on this for a moment... Luke Skywalker, the man who outdueled Vader and surely improved as a duelist since "Return of the Jedi" was completely and utterly DOMINATED by a girl with no formal training whatsoever. Now... since running away to die, I'm sure some things got rusty... but there is NO way that an untrained force user like Rey should have been able to dominate him as easily as she did.
And if you find THAT compelling... I really don't know what to say. I'm all for having strong female characters. Star Wars has a history with that, especially if you go into Legends. But it shouldn't writing a story simply for highlighting strong female characters. The character must fit a convincing story... And you really DON'T have that in canon beyond the fact that Rey is the Goddess of the Force...

There is nothing in the original trilogy that would explain that...
From what we know of Luke's character from the original trilogy, while he may go into some isolation to learn how to counter Snoke and his great power... he would still be responsible to Leia, apologize for his failure and promise to set it right. To not even admit the mistake until cornered on it... THAT is cowardice pure and simple, as he's apparently afraid of being judged on that failure.
He may not have wanted to fight her, but that doesn't mean his only option was to just keep her at arms length and then fall on his butt. All that did was give her the initiative and momentum in the fight and allowed her to dominate him. Even all she was doing is letting off steam, she'd been given the initiative because Luke wouldn't do anything to hold her back... Like say... lift her into air so she can't move and talk to her like a grown up...
Instead he gave Rey the advantage and she took advantage of it and dominated him for it.

Luke is crazy. Some of my favorite descriptions of his Force feats come from the book /Before The Storm: Star Wars Legends/ by Michael P. Kube-Mcdowell. He creates a house for himself that ignores all physical notions of gravity and space. Han enters it through a crack in space and has to walk up the wall of a spherical room to get to where Luke is. It’s mind-boggling.

38:56 I once ran the numbers to see how powerful Sidious' lightning would be compared to the average bolt of lightning. What I found is that the electricity generated from Palpatine's finger tips is close to *70,000* times more powerful than the lightning bolts generally in thunderstorms.

The way Luke acted in TLJ was entirely justified and in line with the character, just the same as Legends Luke was. They both represent different ways the character could have progressed as he aged.
+Robert Fancyman Not really justified and not really in line with the character. Luke in TFA and TLJ hid out on a planet on the edge of the galaxy while everything literally and figuratively went to hell. This is not keeping in line with Luke's character. This isn't in line with his character and where the OT left him at the end of ROTJ. Luke wouldn't abandon his friends and live on obscure planet for 30 years. He didn't abandon his friends in ESB when he trained on Dagobah. When his friends were in trouble at Cloud City he dropped his training and left to rescue his friends. He didn't do that in definitely didn't do that in TFA or Han Solo would still be alive.
Luke wasn't someone who would let failure consume him and hide out somewhere. Luke was hopeful in the OT and was set to fulfill what Kenobi and Yoda trained him to do. TLJ butchered that by him failing to revive the Jedi Order and not pursuing a way to revive a second time after he failed the first time. Also Luke spends the entirety of ROTJ with the plan to redeem his father, believing he can redeem Anakin, and succeeds in doing so. How is it you go from that to trying to kill his nephew for being tempted by the dark side and Snoke. Luke didn't give up and let failure consume him after his loss to Vader in ESB, he could have but didn't. Same can't be said for Luke "Jake" Skywalker.
I don't want to get dragged into an internet argument over this, so I'll just state my reasons for thinking it worked and we'll leave it at that. Luke was consistently shown to be someone who had moments of weakness, like when he gave in to the Dark Side for a few moments and defeated Vader.
When he was standing over Kylo with his lightsaber ignited, it was a moment of weakness. He had seen the galaxy put through so much sadness and destruction the last time he'd seen that kind of darkness, and even then he was about to put his weapon away when Kylo woke up.
Just that single moment of weakness left the Jedi Order destroyed once again, with all his students either dead or turned to the Dark Side. That shattered his confidence in training Jedi, it made him think that him being around would be bad for the galaxy, so he went into hiding to protect his friends and the innocent of the galaxy from his failings as a person.
His self-imposed exile was his way of protecting his friends, not abandoning them. Misguided or not, he didn't know any better way.
I chose to use my Force Forget ability when thinking about Disney Luke.
I feel like if Anakin hadn't betrayed the Jedi he, without a doubt, would have been the most powerful Force user; not even just Jedi
Honestly, we can't really fault Yoda and Luke for not having confronted scores of Sith like K'kruhk, Satele, or the other old republic or legacy grand masters. There wasn't exactly an abundance of Sith in the Rise of the Empire/Rebellion/New Republic/New Jedi Order eras
Before legends ended they came out with a new sith order. Around the time of abeloth.
This is why the Disney version sucks..... They do not show just how powerful Luke is. They make him as pale as Kit Fisto. Far as I am concerned...Legends is the Cannon, and Disney is non cannon Alter-verse

Is he even Jedi Grandmaster in Disney version? I haven't seen the Last Jedi, and I'm not going to watch it. But based what I have gathered, I get impression he's just bitter old hobo, who had massive potential, but never actually became even equivalent of a regular Jedi knight, because there was no one left to teach him. Does he actually do anything, that's more than what he is able to do in the original trilogy?

You should try to rank every Skywalker/Solo jedi, sure Luke might be at the top, but there is a lot of discussion to be had with Cade, Jaina, Kol, Roan, Ben, Leia, Jacen, Anakin Skywalker/Solo, plus half a dozen others.
In my opinion:
1. Luke Skywalker
2. Jacen Solo
3. Jaina Solo Fel
4. Kol Skywalker and Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader
5. Cade Skywalker
6. Nat Skywalker and Leia Organa Solo
7. Ben Skywalker
8. Anakin Solo
I don't know enough to rank the rest, but Ben Solo aka Kylo Ren is bottom of the barrel, and Anakin Solo and Ben Skywalker might be interchangeable. It's been a while since I've read the Vong series and their other appearances. As for the rest, Luke is indisputable, Jacen is described as being better than Vader and it took an ambush for Jaina to defeat him, and even that didn't quite do the job so she is overall below him. I put Kol and Anakin together due to Kol's hype and confirmed abilities, and Anakin's just a beast. He isn't quite on par with Jacen or Jaina though. Cade has simply defeated opponents that I think would give anyone below him trouble. Nat and Leia are together because I believe I remember Leia being mid Council level, and Nat is kind of out of practice.
Yoda's words were that he could no longer lift all 6 after turning 700, so he was able to lift all 6 at one point.

Very well done - I listened to the whole thing, something rare for me. I am a legends reader though I stick to only original character books - though I will read and Zahn book and have enjoyed Thrawn 2.0, especially with how Marc Thompson portrays him in the audio books.

Unfortunately, Rian Johnson has now made Luke Skywalker probably the weakest of all Jedi Grand Masters. Can you think of any Jedi Grand Master who's weaker than Luke Skywalker?

Within a mere week of learning that the Force even existed, she's now a master of a lightsaber combat who can successfully mind-probe and defeat longtime Force users like Kylo Ren, she can take out multiple Praetorian guards with barely a scratch, and perhaps most disheartening of all, she easily defeats Grand Master Luke Skywalker in their duel on Ach-To.

Luke cut himself off from the force after the death of the new Jedi order. The only side of the force was the dark side which the force is a self balancing entity, which gave rise to some one with equal power in the force on the light side, Rey.

@@matthewhellmann5759 bruh Luke never fell to the dark side. The dark side just existing isn't enough to spawn a light side person to bring balance. Luke already did that by destroying the Sith. No Jedi, no Sith=balance.
I think Rey is the start of something new. That's why she's exceptional in the Force. She isn't Jedi, she isn't Sith. She can touch the Force, but both have been gone for so long now that they are nothing more than frameworks people coming after can use to build their own model.
Like Kylo did. He attempted to follow his grandfather down the path of the Sith, only to realize such a path no longer existed and he has to forge his own destiny.
I believe Rey is the same with the light side. All she has been is disappointed by Luke, and I believe this was a concious choice to show that both the Jedi and the Sith no longer have any bearing on what will happen in the future.
Whatever we see in the next movie, it will not be the Jedi coming back. Or fighting the Sith. I think it's going to be an evolution to something completely different.
Whether or not that is a good thing is up for debate. I myself love the NJO stories a whole lot to me that's prime Star Wars.

It's this kind of video that makes my heart sing. Someone looking at 45 years of SW lore and using that knowledge to make an excellent video about the Grandmasters of the Jedi Order. And to say that there are people these days who say we should just forget all of this lore and "move on" .....no even worse, there are some extremists in that camp who would want nothing more than for all that knowledge to be destroyed at once, so that only the "new canon" will be availlable. But that's never going to happen, because it would mean that they would have to literally "hunt down" everyone who has books containing the Legends Lore and destroy them. Hmph, as if the owners would hand them over so easily. Fact is that all this knowledge that has been accumulated over so many years, and wich Disney and even George Lucas, dismiss so easily, has to be preserved and forwarded at any opportunity so it stays alive. Don't let those narrowminded fools that call themselves "new fans " and who want to see this lore abolished win !
