Joseph Liebmann sent me a bunch of notes awhile back. They said that the finale aired on August 30, 1991, and the Bob Goen run of Wheel of Fortune also aired its final episode on that day, too.
Parts of the car podiums set, including the arches, were reused shortly afterwards for the Days of our Lives primetime special episode "One Stormy Night". I guess NBC didn't want to hint too much about this being the end so that it could be lucrative for reruns, but despite the "II" proposal and the return of Scrabble in 1993, it never quite came to be, and this remains the only network game show to air exclusively reruns year-round, much like how many sitcom reruns were once a staple on network daytime TV.
Did you know that the Bob Glouberman in this episode is now a successful actor and voiceover artist? This was among one of his first appearances on TV.
It will soon be coming (hopefully) to Buzzr. They are getting ready to start the final format (2 strikes format). They run two shows a day. If they were to run the show for a little over six months with no interruptions, they will run this finale. I can't wait for Buzzr to run this one:)
Thankfully, this show is on Buzzr now. My guess is that Buzzr now has the 1991 finale, but I hope Buzzr will run this final episode in much better quality.
It’s interesting on the buzzr version they showed the contestant plug and during the closing a bit more chatter about coming back next week. My guess is nbc edited the show a bit when they knew it would be the last episode.
@@bellbm Yes. Being that this is probably the first time the finale aired in about 32 years, I found it very interesting that this is the first time that it aired this way, and not the way NBC aired it.

I know NBC continued to offer reruns of the show for a while longer, so they may not have wanted to make it look like a final show. I think it would do very well in an hour format. This version always seemed like they really didn't have enough time to play.

I haven't seen an official reason for first-run episodes ending on 9-20-91, but at that time, the show was being dropped by some NBC affiliates. The local Minneapolis NBC affiliate dropped the show on 9-27-91, one week into reruns and replaced it with local programming. And although the show may have been still getting ratings on the stations it aired, not enough NBC affiliates were airing the show to justify the costs of further first-run episodes.
It was also around the time when CBS and especially NBC were abandoning game shows because of their rapid loss of interest and the advent of the talk show era (Jerry Springer, Ricki Lake). By 1994 NBC was completely out of the daytime game show business while CBS only had The Price Is Right.
Interesting. KARE 11 is the NBC affiliate from Minneapolis, but their studios are in Golden Valley, a suburb of Minneapolis about a mile north of General Mills International Headquarters.
This would've been the perfect puzzle to end the final episode of Classic Concentration: EWE + the letter V, Ben Franklin, letter M + OAR, TH + hen, K + eye + ND. Answer: "You've been more than kind."
I just thought of a great idea. If NBC had brought back Concentration once more in 1993, they could have called it Classic Concentration II. Gameplay would have been exactly the same as Classic Concentration with the rebuses. More of this on what could be with a tournament-style format, with a new preliminary jackpot-building game based on the '85 format (matching words to make phrases). Alex Trebek and Gene Wood would have been great to return as hosts and announcers. Even if the show was not available in the sale of Mark Goodson Productions to All American Television, Jonathan Goodson Productions would have been great to took over production of the show.
I don't think there's never gonna be a "Classic Concentration 2". Not a good idea. Can't do that in 1993. This show ended in 1991, and this undecided final episode was from 1991.
The opening rebus on this episode was previously used in Game Play, as the puzzle in Game One of episode # 740 (OAD 4/10/1990). It was a common occurrence to re-use prior rebuses in the opening.
If this is 9/20/91, then why is there a promo at 19:15 for the Miss America pageant on September 19? TVLubber: Just because many traders say this is 9/20/91 doesn't necessarily mean it's right. And given the aforementioned Miss America plug, I don't think it is.
For 3 months he was also pulling Triple Duty with this show and To Tell the Truth, both for NBC from February to May 1991 and Jeopardy! in syndication.
I used to loved this show, and I still missed it. But I hope if NBC needs to revived the original "Concentration". Guess what, ABC did brought back the new "Match Game" with Alec Baldwin, but I hope another network which is NBC decide that it needs a new look to make the show more modern than the original "Concentration" rather than the whole G/T and Mark Goodson era version. Or you can put this one onto Buzzr if they can find all of the episodes of "Classic Concentration", or put it on one of the NBC sub-channels like Cozy-TV or Decades.
The TofC week originally from 11/1990 is uploaded does have a commercial promoting the eighth season premiere of the Cosby Show which did air on 9/19/91.
