Woman takes charge of MSDF Aegis destroyer for 1st time

- MAIZURU, Kyoto Prefecture--A woman for the first time assumed command of a Maritime Self-Defense Force Aegis destroyer on Dec. 2, which serves as a vital line of defense in the Sea of Japan against North Korean missiles.
Capt. Miho Otani, 48, took the helm of the Myoko, which has a standard displacement of 7,250 tons and a crew of about 300.
“I will shoulder the responsibility not only for my ‘family,’ which means crew members, but also a large household that includes all crew members’ families," Otani said in addressing the crew. "I am determined to protect my large family with my life as the ship's commander.”
A change of command ceremony was held aboard the Myoko, which is homeported at the MSDF’s Maizuru base in Maizuru, Kyoto Prefecture. A small boat ferried the ship's new commander to the destroyer, which she boarded and was welcomed by the crew members.
After the ceremony, Otani told reporters that in leading an Aegis destroyer, “I know it will not be easy, but I have no concerns. I want to fulfill my duties."
In terms of women serving in the MSDF, Otani said: “I think that the number of female members will increase from now, but I am not sure how many of them can gain a foothold. The challenge is how female members can work actively while balancing life events such as marriage and giving birth.”
Otani is from Suita, Osaka Prefecture. In 1992, she enrolled in the National Defense Academy in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, as the first female student. She has served as the skipper of the destroyer Shimayuki, which is used in training exercises, and at the helm of the escort vessel Yamagiri.
Aegis destroyers have the capability of tracking and intercepting targets such as hostile aircraft and missiles using a high-capacity radar system. Currently, the MSDF operates six Aegis destroyers. In addition, two others were newly launched by July.

That is why I don't think women should serve in situations where they are fighting men 1.5 more lethal, e.g., hand to hand combat OR where women slow down ground forces because biology didn't give them the legs to keep up. They should do well in other combat roles assuming they have the mentality required to kill. I do believe there are women that merit the rank and position that males have held. Now it is a question of convincing women to want to try...much harder to enforce, no matter what men do to enable them. And forcing men out and women in...well that is just a PC shitshow.

この人の場合、”なんでもかんでも私がやらねば”みたいな変な気負いが無く、部下に任せるべき処はちゃんと任せる事が出来て、”私は私のやるべき事をやる”と言う所をわきまえているように見える。

防衛大出のエリート自衛官なら誰でも大佐になれますよ。
早い遅いの差はあれど。唯一選ばれるのは幕僚長くらいです。
あと、自衛官は公務員なので仕事の成果はあまり関係なく、無能でも大佐くらいにはなれます。

指揮幕僚課程の存在もどうせ知らないんだろうから仕方ないが「唯一選ばれるのは幕僚長くらい」は自分でおかしいと気付きなさい。あと、公務員でも勤務評定あるからな。
佐官が関わるのは”戦術”レベルですからね。
将官だと、政治が絡む”戦略”レベルに関わる事になります。
日本の海上自衛隊は世界でもトップレベルなんだってね
潜水艦に関しては世界一と言っても過言ではないです。現に演習で米海軍は一度も日本の潜水艦を発見できた事がないそうです。因みに日本側は米海軍の空母に対して何回も撃沈判定を出した事があるとか。嘘だと思うと思いますが、海上自衛隊に関する本にもこの事は載っていてかなり有名な話しですよ。世界中の海軍と比べても五本の指に入る程の実力を保持しているそうです。まぁ～実戦になってみないと分からねぇじゃねぇかと思う人もいますが、現に海上自衛隊は対戦水能力も米海軍に次ぐ2番目に強いと言われており、実際に中国海軍の潜水艦を自衛隊の哨戒機が追っかけ回して浮上させるという出来事も起きています。確かニュースにもなった話しですね。まぁ～簡単に言うと数は少ないがかなり強いという事です。短期決戦であれば中国海軍にも勝てると思います。長期決戦になると厳しいと思いますがね

@@user-cj4px5wz8h 米空母関連の話は事実かどうか不明ですが、宮古島付近を潜航する中国海軍の潜水艦を2日間に渡って哨戒機と護衛艦2隻で追い回して浮上させたのは事実ですね。2018年1月の事で、防衛省から発表出てます。
他にも昨年、海自哨戒機が奄美付近で潜航する潜水艦を探知し、護衛艦と共に追尾してます。機密上発表される事は多くないですが、海自の潜水艦探知能力はかなり高いです。

Wow, I wish the Navy Captains in the US Navy that I served in looked as good as she does.
Well, they may look that good in the near future, a lot of the early women in Naval positions were put there through political action, not ability so they ended up getting killed due to their own incompetence.

Go back far enough and it's no different than the old school shitbirds that refused to take orders from "coloured folk" and did their level best to drive them out as well.

@@sigem9333 旧軍と自衛隊で佐官と将官の語尾は変わっていません。旧軍の大将に相当するのは自衛隊では海上幕僚長たる海将で、一佐ではありません。艦長の上官である艦隊司令でも少将で、大将が艦長などということにはなりません。

Had the pleasure of participating in exercises with the Japanese Navy when stationed in SanDiego. Probably the most professional and dedicated navy in the world. Japanese navy is no joke.

The swastika was only used by the Nazi's. But the rising sun flag has been used officially from 1870, but different versions have been used like the hiashi mon for centuries. We might as well ban all the European and North American flag because they represent slavery and colonialism.

@@capmidnite yes and neither are all flags that represent colonialism. For example under the Union Jack, many atrocities have been committed in places like India, Australia and Africa. Do we tell the British not to use those flags? Personally I don’t think thats the best idea. I think the British people have their own right of self determination, and not have other countries tell you what flags should and shouldn’t represent your own country.

The modern Japanese military is well equipped, well trained and superbly professional. That said, unlike the old Imperial days it's not usually the first career choice for young ambitious Japanese men (and women).

@@genremags8317 Actually, that's incorrect. I have experience navigating ships also. My comment wasn't a dig at women or the Japanese but rather the modern US Navy that has developed a habit of running into commercial shipping. 80% of what navigation crews are doing at any time is trying to prevent collisions. 10% is donuts and coffee. Use your imagination to figure out the remaining 10%.
I like how the Japanese still use British style uniforms. They copied allot from the Royal Navy back in the day.

When she was the captain of DD-133 Shimayuki, she was about to collide head-on with a cargo ship in the Kanmon Strait. The JMSDF held the navigating officer responsible to protect her.

Not only tough but super smart. She’s all business, as a CO has to be. A relative of mine thru marriage was CO of a nuclear carrier and later was a 3 star admiral in the USN. Vietnam war hero as a navel pilot.

I was gonna say that. But you gotta remember, we were trained under the direction of the US. So uniforms were the same except for Japan insignia of course. There's a really cool old video in the early 50s showing japanese wearing the same uniforms as US Army/Marine Corp equivalents.
