Wow, I only discovered him when he was already on top, it is so cool to see how even as a literal kid he already had that passion, not to mention the drive to learn the many diverse skills required to get to where he is today. @@inevespace He more honest than a majority of viewers, many sometimes are afraid to say bad things about a product. Also, he makes videos for the normal consumer, most consumers aren't crazy tech savvy. So they need a middle ground introduction to things. MKBHD does just this.
MKBHB is definitely a legend. What I like about him is that he's also collaborating with other product reviewers and often mention them which tell one a lot about him. When he's with his crew it's not about him but a team effort

Marques is the only creator who's video I watch in it's entirety. No matter what the video is about I watch it. His obbession with tech is what makes him special. Be it his main channel, or the studio channel or the auto channel or the waveform podcast. I watch it all. That's the brand that he has build.
What does MKBHD do better than other top tech UA-camrs ? They all shoot quality video and most provide more comprehensive information about the product than MKBHD
Videos like this are usually made after someone special like MKBHD dies… So it’s nice to finally see praise given to someone like MKBHD while he’s alive and kicking. Props to John and the FPT team for this.
Dude's a legend. MKBHD, LTT, FPT, and occasionally D2D are the only OG tech channels I watch on the regular. They all have their own style. Like Jon said though, everybody else trying to copy MKBHD has ruined tech UA-cam. They all seem to care mostly about getting the prettiest shot and editing as opposed to the product or the actual review itself. I think even Marques has realized this and lately has cut back on the overly stylized videos, which I think is a great move.
Yeah I'm not subscribed to MKBHD, but I do catch a lot of his videos and I've noticed he's gotten a lot more basic and more straightforward. I mean I guess the shots they showed of him holding the phone is a "style" and every shot is probably extremely well thought out, but it just seems a lot more subtle and natural. I think his videos from even a couple of years ago almost seemed too "produced" and you could tell they were very scripted. Perhaps that's why I never subscribed to him, that and he seemed to be a bit of an Apple "homer"/"fanboy". Over the last couple of years, like I said not only has he "cut back" on his stylization (again in a good way), he's also become a lot more impartial and seems to tell it straight to all of the companies about what the average consumer would most likely want to see going forward.
I'm not a content producer, but if I were, I really would study Mark's videos. I don't know if you realized it, but Mark put a lot of colorful stuff on his videos in order to fill the environment with life. He puts books, objects, pencils, etc., and he puts all those things in color harmony. He matches the color of the environment with the color of the smartphones he is reviewing. It's a lot of detail. I appreciate it.
Him and his team are definitely an example of sticking at your art till you not only refine it but become one of the standards of how that art should be done. So smaller channels can learn from him and the biggest thing to take away is that for most people refining your art takes time, LOTS OF TIME
I remember when Marques first started coming to Apple events. Someone asked me who he was, and I explained it this way: The Wall Street Journal has Walt Mossberg, and UA-cam has MKBHD.
This video is full of so much inspiration. Almost everyone has the tools they need, it's the mindset and persistence that is so hard to come by. Thank you for putting this together!
I'm sorry brother, but title is misleading... He didn't ruin the tech videos, but other people copied him. You see copycats everywhere from hip hop to painting, to car-designs, to phone-designs, etc. Dont understand how others ain't commenting about the title, but it's prolly just me then
I learnt so much from this video. From the catchy title and thumbnail to the script, and that advice to anybody looking to start up a channel was directly pointed at me. And that outro was beautiful. Thank you for making this.
I feel like the thing that makes his channel so special, besides the ridiculously high quality videos, is the fact most of us grew up watching his content. His content matured the way us and the way he did, to the point where we all feel something special when tuning in to his channel. He’s the best to ever do youtube tech. He set the bar so high it’s almost impossible for anyone to compete. And what makes him even more special is the fact he remained genuine and true to himself and his audience. He never let money or notoriety get to him. When we tune in to MKBHD, we all know we’re hearing Marques’s genuine opinion and feelings towards the product
Saying impossible for anyone to compete is a major exaggeration. He has high quality editing and video quality but in terms of actual content there are much better people and he himself could do much better as well. For example Marques may tell you about the new iphone and the A17 Pro chip and at best case he might show you a geekbench score. While i saw a much smaller UA-cam channel go ahead and run every benchmark and test on the damn thing testing exactly how much performance a A17Pro CPU has, how much the GPU, how the e-cores perform, how it compares to previous models and Snapdragon whether it gets any benefit from 3nm and how the cooling performs, how easy it throttles and whether it will be good for the battery life. Even showing new upscaling incoming tech to be used in iphones so they can play the heavier games they showed etc. And do you know how much work that is? Margues doesn't even touch the surface of such detail tech analysis, he just comments on the little features like everyone and how it feels and that's it. Sure his video looks nice and shiny and cool but in terms of actual real in deep content he didn't even come close to that guy. Marques is in the category of tech entertainment which is basically using tech to make cool videos not making videos for the sake of tech and actual real tech knowledge and analysis. I'll say he has more talent in cinematography than talking about tech.
@@SIPEROTHwhile I mostly agree to your views, you also have to consider that making videos for the general audience won’t allow you to get too much into the nitty gritty details. Thats for the enthusiasts, correct? And MKBHD videos are watched by a large variety of audience. Presumably, the videos that talk details of the performance of those processors wont be reviewing as many phones as MKBHD due to resource constraints of being a smaller channel. Let me know your thoughts.
@@NafisSazeed That is why i said is tech entertainment. Something you just watch because it looks nice. I wouldn't buy a device just from what Marques showed me because many questions are left unanswered. But will i watch his video? Probably yes since it looks so nice and shiny. I'll watch it even if i wasn't interested in buying a device. Although i get he gets more views like this and has built an audience like that and can't just throw detail graphs to an audience wanting just cool video entertainment i also stated he can do better. He doesn't have to reach geek level benchmarking and opening phones and connecting things to them to measure etc but he can add some more tech info and simple test that show certain behaviour and characteristics of the main chip of the phone and some other things. I actually found a girl that doesn't try to be too geeky and go too technical and still tries to make that cool looking video but at the same time every time i watch one of her videos i feel a lot more informed about the device that when watching Marques. She puts little info and details here and there that just make the difference to how much you feel you understand what you will get by buying that device. So i think he can do that too. As he is i just watch him more for the cool cinematography on a subject i like.
@@SIPEROTH that's because most people don't care much about that stuff when buying a phone. When I buy parts for my PC, I look for in depth info like that (and realize I'm a niche in the grand scheme since most don't build PCs). But most people just want to know how the phone "feels" rather than tech-benchmarks and how many nanometers its processor chips are (although I do like knowing which snapdragon is being used). With phones, I think the experience of using it tends to carry more weight than many of the hard specs. I agree that "it's impossible for anyone to compete" is an overstatement, but I also think while it's great that there are channels that dive into those details for those who love it, it doesn't make Marques "just tech entertainment" and not a reviewer who's knowledgeable about what's being reviewed. It's about gathering your opinions and distilling down the details most people will care about to inform their purchase. I think he achieves that and with style.
Marques is one of those rare few who can properly claim GOAT status in the UA-cam creator landscape. Huge respect for his incredible work ethic and passion for quality. What a guy and what a great video to showcase what he's achieved 🙌🙌
Great video man! I was introduced to MKBHD's channel 15 years ago by older brother....long story short, now I'm a well paid senior software engineer, and still have MKBHD to thank for inspiring me to get into tech!
I love the way you gave him his flowers. We need to all appreciate what we bring to the space. I personally appreciate fpt. and also all the commentors and those I have met on this platform. We make each other better. Salute BRUVZ!
What I've always loved and still do are those unexpected videos where the intro music is so good and the entire set-up/animation/composition (not just the film/editing portion; but the things that are there *intentionally*) it's always so satisfying & makes you feel hyped because it's a dose of something no one else has effectively lol
Dude this really helped me so much. I've been debating on starting my page and because you've made me feel like I should just go for it I plan on it. Thank you so much
Your videos are no slouch either. You and MKBHD are the only tech channels I regularly watch. I'm glad you have both found success in this constantly changing industry. I look forward to seeing where you two take this.
When I first started watching this video, I thought some small time youtuber was trying to bad-mouth MKBHD since it says that Marquez 'ruined tech videos' but I am glad that I watched it. Well said fpt. I give you my like , subscribe and respect for making this video.
Thank You so much for making this video. As a 90's kid who's grown up through the generations, this video is such a major throwback and gives rightful credit where its due. No other generation can say that they used to watch tech videos not only as a way of keeping informed but also when they had bad days. It's definitely an art form and has actually become a hallmark of quality and passion! Kudos to Team MKBHD!
Brings a little tear to my eye seeing a young Marques, not much older than my nephew, innocently doing a thing that he loves. Taking his little baby steps towards success.
thank you for the wholesome throwback to 2013 you really took us on a ride - I really liked the comparison of your activity at the time. It makes the video so relatable!
I love this video, especially the part that says "If you're waiting for that MKBHD camera or MKBHD look don't." That one hit home. I started watching UA-cam as a site like HBO, or Netflix back in 2015 when i was doing research on my first "good" phone to buy. Now, the majority of the content I watch comes from UA-cam. I've thought about doing tutorial videos. Not because it's the most popular content on UA-cam, but because I have a background in education, specifically instructional design. Been buying the Elden Ring official guide books for my love of the game, and have wanted to extend that love to others who find Elden Ring too hard. So, using my instructional design knowledge, and the Elden Ring guides, I'm gonna take the jump and make my tutorial videos. They're probably gonna flop since lots of videos already did that, one year ago.... But this is exactly what I needed to combine my love for teaching and for youtube and video creation into a hobby. Thanks FPT dude!
i remember being part of the 700k subscribers he had back then and how he thanked viewers for reaching 1M sub it was one of the most genuine appreciation a creator said to his subscribers. his Samsung S3 review was among the reason why i have always wanted to own a Samsung phone back then and 10 years later i have the S23 Ultra and this video reminds me of exactly why i was so influenced by him so much into owning this device or be interested on the tech he reviews - not because of what he's reviewing but because of his opinions about it.
So much love for MKBHD! He really has changed the landscape of tech videos and earned a lot of respect from the industry as a whole. Great job on giving him props!
Spot on. I am litterally waiting on his take before deciding between iPhone 5 Pro Max and Google Pixel 8 Pro. Waiting for the embargo to be lifted so he publishes his view on the Pixel 8 Pro then I decide! There's what every other reviewer says, then what MKBHD says about a product. Respect to all creators (including myself lol) but MKBHD does it his way and that hits home.
Just wanted to slide into the comments and thank you for this nostalgic video and your content. I grew up as a viewer with your content Jon, Marquess, Quinn, Austin and many more and somehow also together with you - even if we don't know each other, especially you don't know me. Nevertheless, thank you for the many hours of entertainment and know-how.
Really great piece with excellent observations. Your comedic timing is great Jon, but these more “serious” videos are becoming some of my favorites of yours. I’m glad you’re taking time to shuffle some of these into your rotation.
I'm not that interested in smartphones, but a couple of years ago, I think 1080p videos on youtube were still pretty new, I started watching MKBHD and then kept watching just because of how well-produced and crisp these videos were! Each one felt like one of those monitor demo videos, only they were also about tech reviews! And it was clear that all the other tech channels started trying to catch up, but never quite made it. Like LTT was obviously trying to, and they had all these specialists who were obviously doing a good job, but MKBHD was just always a step ahead.
MKBHD is only a tech youtuber if you consider tech to be smartphones and Apple products. Literally all of his videos boil down to "this product is nice, but it's expensive" or "this product isnt as good as that other one, but it's cheap" filmed with a 50,000 dollar camera and stretched over 15 minutes. He doesn't play videogames, doesn't know anything about programming, Linux, servers, Arduino, never built a PC and barely knows anything about computer hardware. He's literally a dumbed down version of LTT for normies with a hefty dose of Dunning Krueger on top. I'm sorry but who tf watches that?
@@GH0STST4RSCR34M I personally view MKBHD’s content to be informative so if that’s the quality I am aiming for naturally being informative goes along with it. You can go pick apart someone else’s comment and over analyze every single word. Have a great day

The thing that I like about Marques' videos by how they are edited, it still has a raw quality mixed with a high polished look. It looks amateur and professional all at once. His style as well as his editors follow a similar balance of having interesting angles, a specific lighting, a specific color grade/balance and the script or what is said in the videos feel "youtuber like". I dislike when some edited videos of similar topics look like a commercial, they lack personality. They look and feel like a product.
Marques shows a real passion for anything he does on the internet. This guy always cares about his work and delivers the best to this audience. One of my favorite content creators to date. LOVE
I’ve been watching him since 2016 when i was 15. Still an absolute fan, and still NOT a tech junkie!!! I just watch him because of his craft, his insight, his passion, and his consistency and improvement!!! It’s so true: I still watch him simply for him and his team!
Love you and Marques. Thank you all for all you do. Glad people can make a living from this. Its great to see people who do the same thing compliment each other.
You perfectly pinpointed how I first discovered MKBHD. It was honestly kind of eerie just how accurate the scenario you described was. Only addition to make to it was that I was also watching his review on the Nexus 5 and couldn't quite decide which to buy (eventually went with the Nexus 5).
I haven't seen many of his videos. I tend to avoid the hyper stylized tech videos because they often boil down to talking about the color palette, aesthetic, or 'spirit' of the device. And that's all just marketing bs. The amount of substance in the videos is typically pretty lacking so I can't easily find out if a product is any good
yeah it's not only the production quality. its the content, he's intelligent, creative and he's incorruptible. his opinions are not ads disguised as opinions, and he's open to all brands/oses, etc

I started watching Marques after researching the LG G3. I was highly impressed at how he covered that phone and I got it. Been subbed to him ever since. And of all the cool things Marques does, him being on a frisbee team was hands down the coolest imo. 😂👍
I feel like this video is just a nothing burger. The statement of the video is: "everyone copies MKBHD", but that's about everything what the video is about. There is no proof or reasoning to why this would be true. The video doesn't even talk about what is even being copied, like what even is his style? Is the style really just "quality"? So why are other people who try to make high quality videos "Copycats". It's not that I disagree with the raw statement itself, but I don't feel like I got any relevant new information or perspective from this video. It's just taking a 3 word sentence and making a 10 minute video about it without adding any more information.

This is iterally one of the reasons why I watch his videos I value his opinion very highly and he's honest👊
He's got allot of experience and knowledge about whats actaully going on in the tech world he also uses the product the reviews.

Just gained a sub. Class act of a video where you gave MKBHD his flowers while showcasing your very well dressed content creation abilities, in a very humble yet confident way. Very informative and entertaining; the dynamic duo of videos that really do it for me. Can't wait to keep up with and check out your content going forward!
Marques is the only creator who's video I watch in it's entirety. No matter what the video is about I watch it. His obbession with tech is what makes him special. Be it his main channel, or the studio channel or the auto channel or the waveform podcast. I watch it all. That's the brand that he has build.

this comment made me freak out for a couple seconds
Dude's a legend. MKBHD, LTT, FPT, and occasionally D2D are the only OG tech channels I watch on the regular. They all have their own style. Like Jon said though, everybody else trying to copy MKBHD has ruined tech UA-cam. They all seem to care mostly about getting the prettiest shot and editing as opposed to the product or the actual review itself. I think even Marques has realized this and lately has cut back on the overly stylized videos, which I think is a great move.
LGR!
@mrwhosetheboss also makes great content. He has his style too.
Over the last couple of years, like I said not only has he "cut back" on his stylization (again in a good way), he's also become a lot more impartial and seems to tell it straight to all of the companies about what the average consumer would most likely want to see going forward.
fpt?
Love how you sneakily put Fpt there
doing anything consistently for a longggg time is so difficult. so much respect for him
I'm not a content producer, but if I were, I really would study Mark's videos.
@@NafisSazeed
That is why i said is tech entertainment.
I think he achieves that and with style.
wtf is youtube tech? He uploads videos to his channel.
Love the guy and his quality content, he’s a smart understated no nonsense dude.

How did you perfectly encapsulate my middle school high school years in that intro. God damnit Jon.
Huge props to you Prosser, this video describes my perspective exactly! Great video, enjoyed you lifting up another content creator, that's awesome!
thank you for the wholesome throwback to 2013 you really took us on a ride - I really liked the comparison of your activity at the time.
Do it! You will be successful!
i remember being part of the 700k subscribers he had back then and how he thanked viewers for reaching 1M sub it was one of the most genuine appreciation a creator said to his subscribers. his Samsung S3 review was among the reason why i have always wanted to own a Samsung phone back then and 10 years later i have the S23 Ultra and this video reminds me of exactly why i was so influenced by him so much into owning this device or be interested on the tech he reviews - not because of what he's reviewing but because of his opinions about it.
So much love for MKBHD! He really has changed the landscape of tech videos and earned a lot of respect from the industry as a whole. Great job on giving him props!
Thank you for awarding our guy with his flowers while he is here.
