The Samurai Challenge - Not a San Mai, Not a Katana

  • *The original title was "San Mai Katana", but after so many people wanting to correct it and so many others just wanting to show off or bother me, I thought it would be fun to change the title saying what this sword is not.
The truth is that I did it to have fun and participate in a game, I don't care what they call it. ;)
    Hey guys!
Today I bring something new: my first sword!
It would take a little longer to make this piece, but as "The Samurai Challenge" came up, I ended up anticipating it.
In order to be able to build it on time and without delaying my orders too much, I opted for a simpler constitution than a traditional katana. The fulltang shape guarantees a lot of robustness, and has a certain practicality in assembly. To put the traditional binding on the grip, I opted for san mai steel with manganese phosphate treatment, which will protect the carbon in the center from any type of oxidation.
I did the partial roughing to keep the side in a brute forge finish, because I think it creates a nice contrast against the mirrored stainless steel and black carbon.
The heat treatment was done with clay, in order to keep the back soft and reduce the chance of fracture as in traditional katanas.
I like pieces that mix refined and rustic details, I identify with that, and I think this piece is a good example of the combination.
    Thank you for your attention!
    Hope you like it!

This was the last video from the samurai challenge i watched. Like an old saying here in Germany: "Das Beste kommt zum Schluss" - Best comes at the end
Cool shape but still practical, the Hamon just complete it as the sword would say: "Come on, dare me!"
You made a wonderful piece of art, a sword that deserve a name.

I had the idea of making a handle from semi clear epoxy , drill holes through the handle in a pattern. then silver solder in snug fitting dowels copper, brass, nickel. Possibly engraving designs on the ends. Or grind fassets like jewels. them being under the surface of the epoxy protected. Possibly use plastic or glass jewels. place the tang in a mold. Pour the epoxy.using a hot glue and tape gasket to seal the blade. The sand and polish the handle to shape.
I also have the idea of drilling and cutting out the center of the tang. Then pour the handle on the tang.. using tinted resin yellow, green, red and especially blue would look nice. Especially a large handle like this one.. even polyeurothane can be used for a slightly rubbery grip. It would probably be bestti mold a texture in the surface. Using a silicone mold fitting exactly to the shape of the tang and blade. If you wanted to get really techy , use tiny RGB LED lights. Soldered to 30 something gauge wire. Usin button cell batteries in the top of the handle, one side. Anda controller onthe other side. Cast into the handle.with a button, and the ability to remove both for replacement or repair. Likely using a m4 srew on one side.with a M2 screw drilled and tapped into it so the tang only has a single hole drilled and tapped. Or single pair of holes. This also eliminates the ugly side of the screw from being seen.the larer being flush with the tang when installed. and the other screw threaded into it so the ends are out of sight.the LEDs could be sitting on the tang, coated with solder mask, a insulator like paint. Then copper foil tape. Really narrow, about,.020" wuth a pad roughly.040" to solder the led on to. With a translucent epoxy. The led and traces will be invisible until lit. Having them chase around the handle could be awesome. And they are tiny. Abiut 6 will fit on a grain of rice , a small led being abiut 0.2mm x 0.5mm , possibly smaller. 1.5mm is 1/16" 3mm= 1/8" so its tiny. Requires a microscope to solder by hand. And using The RGB LEDs with built in control. Only required 3 connections to be any color, or be programmed to do any color or flash, the handle can be covered and littleraly be a tv screen show crude pictures.. only required a tiny micro controller. That will fit on your thumb nail. And a couple batteries roughly 3/4" diameter, and 2mm thick. For the whole handle it may require 4 batteries. If possible squeeze a 20x30x4mm lipo rechargeable battery in there. With a charge board about the same size and only 1.5mm thick. I bet if it was made someone would buy it. Even if it was a small knife, euth holster, a 4" blade, but what im thinking is HEMans sword, thunder cats something cool.

Love your knives. You make some of the best on UA-cam. That being said, why put a steak knife handle on a sword? lol beautifully made though.

This was a sword inspired by the Japanese ones, but I didn't want to reproduce one of them.
I built it quickly, so I avoided detachable parts.

I think this could actually be called san mai even though you used 10 layers. Judging by what the final etch looks like, the steel in the middle is different from the steel on the sides ending up with 3 distinct layers, which is what san mai is.

I'm sorry.. but it seems to me alone that this is a crossed saber and a katana? Although these swords have different purposes, they are well done, although I think if the handle is made smaller like a one-and-a-half sword, this sword would become even more versatile..

    • @cutelariaharpia
      @cutelariaharpia  8 місяців тому

I made this sword as a free creation, inspired by Japanese blades and using a handle design similar to the style of my knives. The idea was to make the blade a little longer, but I wouldn't have an oven for the heat treatment if I did...
