    TODAY'S VIDEO TOPIC:
THE BEST METHOD TO PRACTICE SPANISH ON YOUR OWN.
There's no getting around the fact that if you want to learn to speak Spanish well, you have to actually practice speaking it. While input (listening and reading) is essential, it's not enough to turn you into a confident and competent speaker of the language.
But is it necessary to have another person with you every time you practice? While it's easy to read, listen, or do some language exercises on your own, many learners wonder if there's a way to practice speaking by themselves as well.
There is! Today, I'm giving you the exact strategy that I used to take advantage of time by myself for learning to speak. It's a method we also help our students with so that their self-study time can be as productive as possible.

One thing I will do which is helpful, but also very frustrating, is try to say in Spanish what I just finished saying in English in random moments during my day. It's really tough because it shows how much you don't know, but I keep trying.

@@EricaRayLanguage Hi, I've been using Chat GPT to help and I've really enjoyed it. The translations appear to be extremely accurate, but would love to hear your thoughts ? Perhaps an idea for a video on A.I.'s role in language learning if it isn't something you have already covered? Thanks

I try to do the same thing. The most frustrating part is, that as much as it makes sense, it's difficult to get past the hurdle that I'm trying to communicate with people that have decades of vocabulary when I essentially have the vocabulary of a five or six year old. I was once fluent in Spanish and Italian up to the age of 6. It's a long story. So it's frustrating that I can't for example recite what I just typed in Spanish because I lack the vocabulary and ability to form the proper parts of speech. When you're a kid, it's expected to learn in baby steps. But as an adult who can already speak a language, you want to be able to convey the same thing in that other language. Beyond things like where is the airport or what day is it or where are you from.

Learning to speak a language is like learning to play a musical instrument, except our mouths are the instrument. Genres that typically have expected improvisation, like Jazz, Blues, Rock, and Funk, have their own vocabulary, which needs to be worked on through repetition and memory for it to eventually find itself in one's performance presented without effort and natural sounding. All of it is best done with a minimal amount of reading from a piece of paper. Memory is golden.
I think Erica is spot on. The key to success is vocalizing foreign language phrases, recording them, and self-correction.
2EricaRayLanguage What makes a good practice partner?

    • @EricaRayLanguage

Nice analogy! I'm so glad the video resonated with you! I think you should look for a variety of practice partners so that you get exposed to how different people speak. Some of those speaking partners should be native or fluent speakers (better if they're actual teachers) and able to correct and help you. Others can simply be really committed learners. It's amazing how much learners can learn from one another! They should also be reliable. It's a real struggle for language learners when they find a speaking partner they resonate with on an app and then they can never find that person again or coordinate schedules, so they waste more time looking for another one. In our Caminos Conversation Club, for example, you can connect with different teachers and other learners daily so you get the mix of native speakers who can correct you and speaking partners who are learning the same thing as you are (and have prepared with the same weekly materials that you did) who also make wonderful speaking partners. And you get the reliability of knowing that there's always someone to practice with and someone to correct you in each session, so that you don't waste time searching. If that sounds interesting, you can find more info here: ericaraylanguage.com/caminos ¡Feliz aprendizaje!

Seems obvious, but this is really useful especially, if you join a group and get asked "who are you and why are you learning Spanish". ☺

Was thinking about this idea this morning, when I stumbled speaking with a Mexican friend. I plan to prepare to answer about being vegan and why I'm vegan. I was missing too much vocabulary this morning. Thanks for your ideas!
