  • Academy Award-nominee Viggo Mortensen returns to the Toronto International Film Festival for his second feature, The Dead Don’t Hurt, as writer-director since Falling in 2020. While promoting the film with co-star and lead Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread), the two sat down with Editor-in-chief Steve Weintraub at Collider’s TIFF media studio at the Cinema Center at MARBL to explore the writing process and the duo’s collaborative chemistry on set.
Set against the harsh backdrop of the American West in the 1860s, Mortensen’s sophomore film brews just on the precipice of the Civil War. Told out of chronological order, The Dead Don’t Hurt introduces us to the ruthlessness of the world around immigrants Vivienne Le Coudy (Krieps) and Holger Olsen (Mortensen), who set out to make a home for themselves on the wilderness of Nevada before Olsen leaves to fight for the Union. Left alone, Vivienne must fight to survive and stake her claim in a town controlled by corruption. Mortensen and Krieps are joined by Solly McLeod (Jericho Ridge), Danny Huston (Children of Men), and Garret Dillahunt (12 Years a Slave).
At Collider’s studio, Mortensen and Krieps discuss their eagerness to work together, why Krieps was the right actress to bring Vivienne’s spirit to screen, and how they found tension and unique moments in the script. Mortensen also talks about exploring the Western genre, the unconventional and nonlinear storytelling he favors for his films, and experimenting with complex themes and the feminine versus masculine.

Mr. Mortensen's brilliance is evident in all he does: as an artist, actor, composer, director. Because of his drive & lifetime of hard work (&, perhaps, his intuitive nature), he is able to combine all his talents into a masterpiece. Ever since I heard abt the movie "coming soon", I knew it'd be great b/c it was his work. I'd been actively searching & repeatedly checking for when & where I can view it. Sure to be a classic!! Mr. Mortensen, appreciate all your work & effort to be able to create all that you do. And look forward to whatever you should decide to do in the future.

His whole process is so holistic, like the movie is a living document. You have to be so flexible with the content as the story unfolds with every addition of sound, sights & artists work the puzzle. Great cast. I've never seen either one of these actors not take command of their role.

Vicky is a very underrated actress and Viggo has been consistent for so long, but still overlooked after all of these years!

I've loved him since 1985. He is very well thought of in the industry and has been Oscar nominated a few times. I'm so glad he's bringing his unique vision to films now. He's such a good soul and I'm happy for his success and grateful for his existence.

Viggo lives in Spain full time and probably hasnt spent 10 min in the US in the last 4 years..........he doesnt know how to play the game. He seems like he is "over" the business and would like to sit back, smoke cigarettes, read philosophy books, travel around Mexico and Europe...He hasnt participated at all in support of SAG strike in any public way....He pops up every now and then when he needs the public to see a movie........That is all his prerogative just seems he is off the US grid....

@@aylemarshland5609yeah he seems just to do his own thing. Keeps out of things that aren't his business and just likes making movies when he thinks there good. Him and reeves are what we should all aspire to be like

@@chrisbarton4874 Thats not true. He highly inserts himself into the political arena of US politics when he hasnt resided in the US since 2009. and unless his up for award season rarely comes into the country.

@aylemarshland5609 That's exactly what someone already said, I think, except about the politics. When was he inserting himself in US politics? I'm not disputing it, just interested. 😊

Actually, he’s always had a soft voice. You probably just haven’t noticed it until now.
Check out his interviews in the early 2000’s. He’s always been like that.

Viggo is such an actor, he is grumpy and irritable majority of his time in public for whatever reason, but knows how to dial up the charm when on camera being interviewed. 99 pics out 100 with fans he has a scowl...he should just say no to photographs than looking iritated......

@@claireflanagan1573 Everywhere Twitter, Instagram, 2 just popped up yesterday.....Viggo is over getting asked for selfies/photos.......I could see back in the 60s, 70s and 80s how exciting it would be to get a photo with an actor but today since 100 percent of people have phones it is excessive. Plus we have the internet they can just go on and google.....he always has scowl on his face and it does look like most of these are airports.......seems like it be easier to get the airline VIP service where they escort him and he could avert some of it....

i don’t think viggo is scowling at all. some people just don’t make expressions very naturally, that’s extremely common with actors. he seems like a soft spoken and somewhat introverted person, and that’s normal

@@mira-ih2yo Disagree, he smiles and lights up when he "feels like it" when it is with another famous person.....He rarely lights up with run of the mill fans.....and there lies in the difference.........it is mostly in airports or where people catch him outside having a smoke..........he should abstain would rather see no picture of him with fans than the put out face..............

It's not a American western if it doesn't star a European actor

This movie has several European and Canadian (and Mexican) actors, including a stand-out performance by Solly McLeod (born in Scotland, raised in England).
