  • Filmed vintage gliders at Ålleberg for three days during summer 2019. This is a historic important soaringcenter in Sweden. Inspired by the germans this was the place to fly gliders.
I want to thank all people i meet at Ålleberg for your passion flying and restoring vintage gliders from the 30-40s.

Bernt! Delighted to (re) find this video and see an old friend still enjoying the simple pleasures of fun gliding . It doesn't seem like 51 years have gone by since this ,then, young Australian turned up at Kirchheim and got inflicted on a young Swede to try to knock out some glass 'hot ships' whilst suffering my appalling German and then chaperoning me around Europe backpacking on a gliding themed 'budget' holiday - best time i have had actually and still brings back memories... ( your desire to own a palm tree and having to photograph you next to one in the Nice railway station comes to mind.... or sleeping in the grounds of the Swedish embassy somewhere or other and the other 'features' of youth hostel etc accomodation.
I really never thanked you for your friendship in helping me "fit in' in a strange country with almost no language and how much having your fluency in English did help.
Really must get back to Europe and even Sweden - perhaps even try out those 'choice' Swedish phrases you taught me just in case we got there on the big 'urlaub' ( l think i might know what they actually meant after i ran into a couple of Swedish tourists in the library many years ago ...(who also came from Skovde! - add umlaut )
Heartwarming to see the old Olympia/meises still being looked after and enjoyed - my family owned the oldest glider still flying in Australia , the famed "Yellow witch" Oly 2b homebuilt from Chilton plans in 1948 , it started the gliding movement in New Zealand after a tour being aerotowed from place to place to give demonstations. I flew maybe 200 hours in it and my father continued to fly it until just a few years before his death about five years ago ( a truly viceless design as mentioned in your excellent video ) i flew several 300k triangles and one 400 but my father would not rest until he had done a 500k triangle in it which he eventually did. I was lucky enough to win the state championship (sports class) in it in 1973 and seemed to get some "jungmeister" status from that, did not even get s check ride before Klaus let me use his standard cirrus (sierra swo) on the Hahnweide... ah the memories.... I'd love to get back in touch and catch up if you'd like , anyway it was great to come across this video and see how the old 'mitarbeiter' is doing.
    Vielen gruss old friend.

Wonderful video! I soloed in 1974 in a Ka13 and share your opinion about the vintage gliders. Keep them flying! They have more sole than today’s fiberglass gliders, which all look alike.

In 1946, a year before I was born, my Dad was employed to redesign the Meise to suit British aerobatic requirements. Essentially the same silhouette, but beefed up for strength adding about 30kg. It was the Chilton Olympia which became the EoN Olympia

9:33 - I loved flying our Ka-6CR when I was like 19 - I once spent almost 6 hours non-stop thermalling above Värmland in Sweden... only nature's call brought me down. A lovely video, thank you!

Magic bit of filming. Loved the camaraderie and appreciation for the past. Brought me back to happy days in the Dublin Gliding Club in the the eighties. Loved those old gliders Ka 7 K8 K13. Really miss old friends that are gone. Especially miss my friend Brian Douglas RIP. Think of him all the time . . . P

Warms an old glider pilots heart. Learned on 1950s/60s planes in the 1980s. Even back then classic planes were in my heart although I was young and everyone around me wanted fiberglass planes.

Jesper... wonderful cinematic coverage of the rural flying club! Beautifully mingled imagery and audio. I spent several days flying with the Boulder Soaring Society, (Colorado) riding in their tow plane to shoot stills of member sailplanes... very challenging air to air subjects, but worth the effort.

This is nearly a perfect mini documentary film. As a somewhat new soaring pilot I drooled through most of this video. Such amazing vintage gliders. Thank goodness for this clan of dedicated pilots to preserve these classic and important bits of aeronautical history. And the fact that you can still flying in an 80 yr. old
Sailplane - WOW! I hope to come visit soon (retiring in 2 yrs.). This would be a dream to fly here in such classic vintage ship! Thanks for keeping soaring alive and healthy.

Please more of this...20 min videos with pilot interviews and history! The ride was amazing as well...loved the way you stopped the music and just let the wind do the talking. As close as we'll get to being a bird that is. You are one of the best at what you do.

YES - very well captured moments by the person holding the camera!
I don't like flying but love to see gliders in the air. I am doing some model airpalne free flight and thermals are a given subject for trying to understand. Where I live in Borås there is a more or less permanent thermal position just above my house. In the autam large numbers of cranes "stop" here to gain height in this frequent thermal.

Agreed - I think it is because more Americans just want to turn up, fly and go whereas gliding requires people to prepare, support and put away at the end of the day as well as fly.

    • @joewoodchuck3824
      @joewoodchuck3824 3 роки тому +1

@@richardmasters8424 You may have a point there. It's business too though. I was well on my way to a PP license at one point in life and have had the desire bubble to the surface multiple other times, and during all of that along with accompanying voracious reading I don't recall any real marketing efforts for anything but power flying.
Another factor could be that Europe is known for good mass ground transit. So they can get around much easier than we mere Americans can. Thus the compelling need for multiple personal transportation methods. We have to get places and individual powered flying is one such option. Gliders not so much.
