For years, Dave Johnston trained alongside Mike Winklejohn, who later founded the famed Jackson-Wink MMA gym in Albuquerque, New Mexico, when they were both World Champion fighters in the early and mid 1980's. (This is where UFC Champ Jon Jones has trained for the last 12 years.) Winkeljohn was also an amazing fighter, but a kick to the face in practice in 1986 put his right eye out, so he decided to turn to coaching.
Dave was by fare best i ever trained under nobudy compares he was amazing fighter one of the all time best kickers pound for pound and even better teacher. ❤

My brother was a good friend of Dave’s when he was living in the San Fernando Valley in California. He brought Dave over to my house one day. He was showing me how to get more power out of my side kicks and spinning back kicks. I had an arm held kicking pad that you hold against your body. I felt his power and no joke I’ve never felt anyone kick as hard as him. I couldn’t imagine getting hit with that spinning back kick it would have folded me like a piece of paper.
Stances as in being able to fight with either left or right leg in the front. If I remember correctly he was born left handed and possibly had his arm tied behind his back as a child and became ambidextrous and he taught many the value of being able to fluidly change from “normal” to “south paw”. Idk, I was a kid and my favorite part was when we used markers as knives to see if we would have been actually stabbed or not! Great dude.
Thank you so much for the channel! Full contact karate/American kickboxing is still my favorite sport- we trained in that sport when I was young and I still train its techniques. It's a beautiful style. I don't like Muay Thai- looks ugly to me. Yes it is effective, but besides effectiveness I like to choose the style that also looks good. And I'm strongly believe that good kickboxers using TKD and Karate techniques can defeat Muay Thai fighters
It's a real shame that kickboxing died in popularity in the US and that the full-contact ruleset went with it. It's basically impossible to find pro matches under these rules anymore.
@@ChechenAbrek101 Indeed. I was young enough in the 80s and early 90s that I only vaguely remember the kickboxing scene at the time but I remember enough to feel nostalgic for it. And I've spent a fair amount of time as an adult going back and researching the history and watching matches. The mid-70s through early 90s was a great time for American martial arts.
0:52 Oh my that karate straight was NASTY. People rag on the technique, but when timed correctly it works to perfection. Wonderboy has a great use of it off of a jab slip.
Uh oh the Nak Muay Nation won't approve of this video 🤣 Dave Johnston was a great World Champion and fought everybody no questions asked and he fought 12 round fights not these safe 5 rounders
The music on this videos are next level motivational.
Yeah i love it got a old school feel to it haha
Miami nights 1984 - the getaway 🇺🇸👌
Awful
This is the stuff that made me go train martial arts when i was a kid. Everything breathes pure awesomeness.

I think you’re better off going to The 80s guy or Neros77 for that
Look up Don Dellpiero - fight for revenge if you haven’t seen that already
his style was very effective against muay thai styles
Really? I gotta look this guy up more. I don’t see technique like this on tv matches anymore. His technique is very clean and precise👌🏽
I don't think any style is effective against Muay Thai
@@themacocko6311 Wushu Sanda and Kyokushin Karate
@@themacocko6311 I don’t think Muay Thai is invincible either. It’s got loop holes like any other discipline. Though if is favored by many.
Thanks for knowledge you hold the keys to this knowledge remember you are a key holder

Happy to have trained with him, taught me to fight in both stances by way of a hard lesson he learned. Rip
Where did you learn from him?
What stances?
