Luckily, there’s not that many McDojos here in Europe and most Karateka I know can at least do realistic sparring and point based Kumite, but full contact fighting like kyokushin, Seidokaikan etc is something else. Those fighters would destroy me for sure, and I have a third degree brown belt.

I caught the last of the Northwestern Karate Association tournaments back in the 90s when I was 15. They shut them down right after that. I got to compete in the 14 to 17 age bracket. We didn't wear pads or anything like they do in modern Olympic events and whatnot. I actually had my age brackets record for most boards broken.

I can agree with that. I competed pretty regularly and I remember in the mid 90s karate was something to marvel at. Most youths were on my level (I boxed and did Chinese Boxing) when it came to skill and prowess. I was at a tournament in '02 and just thought to myself: what the hell happened?! Black belt used to mean something. Now, a "dojo" could sell a 4 year program and say "ok you're a black belt." I used to spar with this kid, his instructor stopped caring about giving belts out when they were all on that cusp of black. He would say to them, "if you want one so bad go buy it." He was old school like my shifu, I respected this kid and his sensei. To them it wasn't about a belt or a title, it was about teaching something that could save your life or make you a better person. Thanks to social media, I have reconnected with him. These lessons we were taught, they've stuck with us our whole lives. Please excuse my paragraph hahaha

One thing I’ve noticed with knockdown style fighting..these days fighters seem to stand in the pocket, punching and kicking the crap out of each other until someone falls. 20-30 years ago the fighters seem to have more space between each other, there was more footwork, more tactical fights, not to mention being more spectator friendly to watch. I’m asking myself the question, would Andy Hug or Glaube Feitosa have been able to use their signature kicks so liberally today if they didn’t have the space whilst fighting toe to toe. It’s questionable..
