  • In this video, Javi focuses on correcting some common errors that players of intermediate level make in their kick serve technique. Usually, these players can already generate some topspin, but if they work on improving their technique they can add more spin, accuracy and power to their serve. Javi breaks this class down into 4 stages, each focusing on a different aspect of the kick serve.
In this video, you will see the following chapters and exercises:
    0:00 Introduction
01:22 Section One ➡️ Tossing the ball for a kick serve
The first stage is tossing the ball correctly. For a kick serve, the player should try to toss the ball so that it falls on their tossing arm's shoulder.
01:48 Exercise 🎾 1: Toss the ball and let it drop slightly behind the left shoulder
02:18 Section Two ➡️ Keeping your balance
As we have to toss the ball slightly further to the left than a flat serve (for right-handed players), we need to adjust the body position accordingly, and this is where good balance comes into practice. The knees should bend and point to the right, while the core and back muscles stabilise the rest of the body as you tilt backwards while tossing the ball. From this position, the body moves like a catapult, and after the impact, the right leg should move up and towards the right to keep the body balanced during the swing of this serve.
03:21 Exercise 🎾 2: Practice lifting your right leg up and to the right
04:11 Exercise 🎾 3: Practice lifting your right leg to the right and backwards
04:41 Section Three ➡️ Generating topspin with the wrist movement
Now we can start to focus on the swing itself. The wrist generates the topspin in the kick serve, so Javi explains how to pronate the forearm correctly to achieve this effect.
06:06 Exercise 🎾 4: Practice wrist and forearm pronation (hold the top of the grip)
06:27 Exercise 🎾 4: Practice wrist and forearm pronation (hold the bottom of the grip)
07:37 Section Four ➡️ Giving the ball a parabolic trajectory
Now it's time to practice serving using the new techniques. Before practicing the full serve, Javi explains that it's important to just focus on the swing and especially the wrist pronation. Sitting on a stool will remove any need for lower body movement and help the student focus on their upper body. Once they are comfortable, they can practice the same techniques from a standing position.
08:18 Exercise 🎾 5: Sit on a stool, hit the ball from low to high to create a parabola
08:56 Exercise 🎾 6: Sit on a stool, hit the ball and finish in semi-pronation
11:00 Exercise 🎾 7: Hit a few kick serves practicing wrist and forearm pronation
11:20 Section Five ➡️ Combining the swing, full pronation and footwork
Finally, it's time to practice the kick serve in its entirety, applying all the knowledge gained in the previous stages. Javi recommends taking it slow, and progressively adding certain elements to their serve as the player improves and feels more comfortable. This can take many practice sessions and is not a fast process.
    11:35 Exercise 🎾 8: Hit a few kick serves finishing in semi-pronation
12:01 Exercise 🎾 9: Add swing to the loading stage of the serve
12:27 Exercise 🎾 10: Add lifting your right leg up and to the back
