Grew up with Reggae while my mates were Rockers, its a music that typically gets called easy and repetitive but when you really get into it you see how unique and how diverse the rhythm guitar playing can get, every little skank has its own unique fingerprint to it not to mention the opportunity for little fills to accompany them, and then because of how important the phenomenal bass lines that the great Reggae bassists had, learning to play the stuck lines to lock in with the likes of Robbie Shakespeare and Aston Family Man Barrett is a challenge and some of the most pleasurable times i've ever had in my life playing guitar. Great lesson!

You've got to love Reggae to play it authentically.
A Jamaican bass player once said to me, 'It'sa notes ya nah play dat mekka bass line g-r-e-a-t ya know' and there lies the secret that eludes a lot of musicians - the gaps.
Let the drummer do the counting, feel the groove between him and the bass player and play where you FEEL it fits in and if you're sitting in that groove good, it'll come natural and sound natural.

This song and many others use 7th chords, D7 / G7 definitely noticeable in the LIVE recordings. Al Anderson is incredibly underrated player. His lead phrasing is remarkable and explosive.
I think Peter Tosh is a greatly underrated guitar player and one of my favorites.
What you mention on when to step on the pedal is so true. Sometimes I feel like I am half a beat out of time when I try to play along with reggae songs. Cool piece of advice there 👍

Excellent that you've applied your ear. Most people who try to play reggae never bother to really listen how much of the tone info that comes through in each skank, and how much is muted. I've always loved that muted staccato sound, and hated cover bands and top 40 hit bands that play "reggae" without that crucial part down. As you say, it is not so easy to get this tight - right and left hand sync really needs to be spot on.
You can also add in a cool blues solo and it will be like 🚀🚀🚀

You got it right on the mute part. If you listen to Pimpers Paradise, for instance, you will notie that the guitar is almost just muting the strings with the chords

Good authentic reggae guitar on the downstroke.
I tend to go neck pup though. Warm tone best for percussive reggae rhythm, especially Marley
. Bright / treble tone is a big misconception in the genre.

I have a hard time keeping time and getting into the groove , I play easy the easy parts too fast and hard parts too slow. Could you please show how to use a metronome while practicing a song
@Kaptain Kid my query was to know to how to keep time in a song be it by counting or by using a metronome and not just simply how to use a metronome :)

Sir While practicing chords like E A & D Where should do I want to look ? Do I want to look at my hitting hand everytime to hit the correct strings ( like if it is D then I should start from 4th string and if A then from 5th right) So it seems like a lot of work to my neck seeing my left hand and right hand again and again. Is that the right way?
No. Just keep practicing until it becomes muscle memory
When you are first learning you have to do a little bit of looking at both hands but concentrate mainly on your left hand if you are playing a right handed guitar. Pretty quickly you should only need to look to your left hand for good fingerings after chord changes and you will instinctively know which strings you are strumming with your right hand after a short while. As Judah said if you practice carefully, slowly and accurately enough then eventually the muscle memory kicks in and you can do both without much looking at all. Don't rush though as you'll end up learning the chord fingerings and changes poorly. Slowly build up your memory but playing chords well. Your accent has been driving me mad. One minute you sound very English (I'm a Brit) then I hear the dulcet tones of an Aussie. Back and forth and trying to figure out where you come from. Decided you are a Brit who emigrated to Oz, but have since read somewhere that you are an Aussie who now lives in London. That explains everything!
He sounds Antipodean through and through to my Brit ear. Dulcet means mellifluous and I don't recall anybody describing Aus/NZ accents that way.
