Help Me, Rhonda - The Beach Boys - Full Instrumental Recreation

- Here's my one-woman recreation of the Beach Boys hit single. A great arrangement all around by Brian Wilson at his pop best.
This recreation is part of my endeavor to transcribe Beach Boys tracks, because I believe an accurate representation of the exact orchestration is important! By testing my transcription out practically, I can make sure I've got things right.
If you think I got anything wrong or am missing something, let me know.
Visit www.joshilyn.com to learn more about what I do. This is a really expensive pastime, and I really would like to get a bass saxophone for future videos, so if you feel like donating to the bass sax fund, you can do it there.
Thanks!

The Wrecking Crew all wrapped in one!
This is amazing...I doubt anyone has covered this song so completely and faithfully since the day it was recorded
This is incredible! To see a band trying to replicate this would be amazing enough, but to be able to play all those instruments yourself is fantastic (let alone being able to source them all in the first place!). Am very, very impressed and in awe of your talents!
I can't wait to see & hear more along these lines...
Thanks! Lots more on the way!
Fab!
Can't get over the accuracy. Sounds like the actual backing track.
You, my friend, are amazing.
This is the best rendition of help me Rhonda I've ever heard
DAMN
JOSHILYN is just so unbelievably talented and so dedicated to the beach boys. She brings so much delight to those of us who don't have the talent. I think maybe I could play that one drum hit on the snare at that critical moment but I probably wouldn't get the timing right. Thank you so much as always for teaching us so much about this music.
AMAZING
That was fantastic. You must have spent many hours working on that. I can't believe you can play so many instruments so well. Amazing!
Absolutely brilliant, Joshilyn...this is the warmup for a different kind of Stack-o-Tracks, I think, going beyond the songs that appeared on that LP (which IIRC had a couple extra on the British release). While I understand the bigger-picture motivation behind this effort, maybe an album of transcriptions can be another way to self-fund...I think many/most of the hard-core fan base would purchase that knowing that it could help sustain you in your ongoing research endeavors.
Blew me away. Thanks!
YESSSS
Thank you Joshilyn, you are amazing!!! I am blown away!!!!!
Amazing!Such talent,tnx,cheers
Thank you. You definitely have the key to Pandora’s box.
I'll never hear this song the same way ever again. Great job. Would love to hear your breakdown of "Salt Lake City". I've always found the instrumental backing quite complex.
This is nothing short of incredible. The addition of the sax takes it over the top .
Every nuance of the original is there as much more. Thank you!
WOW... You did it all. This was incredibly accurate. You have a great ear and you can play all those instruments. WELL DONE!!!
This was so so good!! Seriously talented and a hell of an ear and feel for all the instruments.
Absolutely brilliant!
INCREDIBLE
Bravo!
Brilliant
Just incredible! It's a complete joy watching you play.
Absolut super!
I came here from Michael Sokil's channel. Good job.
Amazing playing Joshilyn, thank you!
yep, she,s fantastic, such a talent, she should be on tour in stead of ron wood cum suis.
Very good Joshilyn, thank you!
Amazing, yes!
Thanks!
well done!
Really astounding. Thanks for this. You picked out stuff I was never sure about!
Awensome!!! Congratulation from Argentina!!!
Absolutely perfect!!!
You absolutely slayed this, incredible stuff!
Outstanding!!!!!!!
This is so great! Thanks! 😊🙏
Absolutely amazing! Thank you!
Nice!
brilliant
You are so amazing. And now that you've blessed us with this version, I wonder if you will perform the earlier version, Help Me Ronda? :) No, I'm just kidding you. I will just sit back and prepare to be blown away by whatever you choose to do next.
I did do a guitar recreation of Ronda a couple years ago -- look for it!
Superb.
Such a great, happy feeling tune!
Wow!
Ay, this is great! Also really enjoyed those full breakdowns you were doing back in the day. Cheers
This will get a full breakdown soon.
Perfection
Kudos. Replicated so faithfully. Awesome.
Amazing!
You are an incredible musician
Just phenomenal!
Joshilyn you are great! Love this!
Hi Joshilyn, love the recreation!! I know you’re obviously busy at the moment, but if you ever get a chance, could you consider post guitar and/or bass tabs for this? Thanks!!
Amazing. Keep these coming. Do you have a Patreon? Also, are both the bass's playing the exact same thing?
I tried Patreon and nobody seemed real interested in it, so I just put up the possibility of one-time donations on my website, www.joshilyn.com - The basses are more or less playing the same thing, yeah. The string bass is tuned down a half-step to make it easier on the player, who was likely to be Lyle Ritz but could have been a few other possible bass players.
Who needs the Wrecking Crew when you’ve got Joshilyn!
Just finished a deep-dive listen with headphones. Phenomenal!
Instant highlights for me:
1:10 Sax Debut: Gave me chills
2:05 Piano Boogie: Spot-on
2:19 Strat Lead: Sooo clean
When all your tracks are done do you mix/pan strictly based on the original or with some variation (uke hard right, Tele hard left, tambo hard right, etc., etc.)?
Hey Scott. My mixing choices depend a little bit on the song. For this, I pretty much kept it as the original 3-track was set up, and then panned the overdubs around a little bit to give it some space. Sort of like, if the mono dub overdubs had been on separate tracks, like, say, when Mark synched all the Sloop John B overdubs for the stereo mix.
There are a few instances where I'll be a little bit more free and do something a little more modern. Some of the Beach Boys self-contained tracks I'm doing that way because it's kind of interesting to hear things opened up more there.
There are a few tracks that had mono only tracks, or we are missing the three-track. So for Amusement Parks and The Girl from NYC, I'm doing those like they would have been (or at least could have been) laid out on a hypothetical three-track. I'll do the same for Don't Talk, when the time comes.
Great question.
Great stuff. If you want to recreate the vocal session I do a mean Murray Wilson.
Haaaaaaaaa!
Dreamy! This is so crisp and clean! Is it a blasphemy to say that I think the original mono mixes are muddy etc? (For instance, I'd take Pet Sounds in stereo any day, hands down.) It's always irritated me and baffled me that you can't really even hear the piano part during the break on the original--and here it is! Curious: would the BBs isolated vocals fit right on top of this? Would it be worth doing? Bravo, Joshilyn...or is it brava? More, please...!
In theory the Beach Boys vocals could go on top, but there might have to be some adjustments for slightly different transfer speeds. My reference track is the raw track multitrack, which might be slightly off from the vocal multi. Not sure! Thanks as ever for your comments!
I would love to hear the isolated stems for this. You do such an amazing job. Every instrument is basically note for note perfect. All it needs is that signature plate(?) reverb on the snare. haha
*Nevermind, I just realized it's tape delay, not reverb.
Oh, and I just noticed something. I could be wrong but listening to the mono mix, it sounds like the overdubbed guitar solo is two guitars in unison to me.
I'll be running down some isolated tracks for this for a video very soon.
@@joshilynhoisington Oooh yay! I can't wait. It's too bad so many of the overdubs for this song were apparently straight to the mono mix. This is the next best thing.
Do you have an extended version where the Fender bass Joshlyn gives Brian the finger?
Ha, well, that is an interesting anecdote -- I think that it may actually play out in the track, because the bass line simplifies for the solo and the last go through of the chorus. I'm wondering if the bass players really did complain enough to get some relief there. It's not a "hard" part but it's an active part.
Bari sax on top of everything else??!!! Who played it!
It was very likely Jay Migliori.
It almost looked like Joshilyn Hoisington…
Who knew that the “Wrecking Crew” was a One Woman Crew!! Brian Wilson would be impressed!
The two uke players wore different colored shirts!!
I would love to see This Whole World or something from Smile
Someday
You should change your UA-cam channel name to "The Joshilyn Crew"
Are you going to do a track breakdown?
I do have all those things, to be fair the Hammond part got about 1 second of screen time, but it's plainly audible, and yes I am going to a deeper look video soon. Billy's part is the Fender XII, Carl's is the Rickenbacker.
@@joshilynhoisington Gotcha, yeah it blends together well. That's what Brian was going for! Chuck Britz: Will she or won't she tune in tommorrow!
Nice, how’s dance dance dance going?
I sort of already did it, minus percussion. It's on the channel. I may circle back around to the Today stuff and do full recreations someday.
Are you okay with me using this for a cover I'm doing? I'll credit you after.
Go for it
those dissonant saxes, Brian also used similarly in california girls (and for once no Hal Blaine in sight)
How did you decide when to use the Fender 12-string instead of the Rickenbacker 12-string?
My channel has a bunch of Beach Boys videos where I try to show the correct chords to a number of Pet Sounds and other songs. Any comments are appreciated.
Good question -- Billy Strange played the 12-string on the basic track cut at Radio Recorders, and Carl added additional 12-string later, replacing Billy entirely in the fade because Billy kind of blew it. Electric 12-strings were still few and far between in those days, so it's a little unclear as to what Billy would have been playing. I chose the Fender 12 because it's a pretty neutral sounding guitar. Carl's overdub happened after his Rickenbacker was stolen -- and I don't know when he got a new one. It's possible that he actually used his fill-in Fender 12 prototype for this instead of a Rick (since he likely didn't own one.). Nevertheless, for the visual impact I used the Rick here, to make the differentiation between Billy and Carl's parts very apparent.
@@joshilynhoisington Is your Fender 12-string setup low octave - high octave? I couldn't see clearly in your video. Rickenbackers are, which gives them part of their unique sound.
@@jlforrest The Fender 12 is a high-low set-up like most 12-strings are these days. The Rick and also the Bellzouki have the swapped strings, and it does make a small difference.
Canadian composer Samuel Andreyev said recently that the rhythm side of Beach boys music is poor and boring. Do you agree?
I'd want more context around the quote, but prima facie, I do not agree.
