- Chopping corn with a IH 3588 2+2 and a IH 650 Forage harvester with a 1 row head. It was a muddy stand of corn, not good rows. I was gonna use my 1256, but I had duals on this already.
@Gregory Salvatore - I had found this about 20 mi. away from me. A older lady had it and was cleaning up the farm, was shedded until the barn fell down a yr ago. it came with 2 corn heads, and I found a workable hay head for it too.
Thats cool , My 16 was shed kept and I hope to have room to put it in next year , How hard does it run ? would it be a good chopper to put behind a 856 ?
Well it could not be much worse than the 3950JD I chopped with this fall LOL
Gregory Salvatore the book says a minimum of 75 hp. I think your 856 would be fine in front of it, I had the chopper with my 1256 at the Northcentral WI gas and steam show chopping oatledge, I'd pick up big wads and it would bog a bit, huff a lil back smoke and hum along otherwise.
corknutz , Thanks for the info , I will have to keep my eyes out for one
Dad had a 16 IH and we ran it for years with a 165 MF and they are only 55 pto hp. It was hairy on hills with the wagon weight but it had enough power for corn at least. Didn't chop hay
That chopper looks like it works good I would like to find a bigger IH chopper to put on my 856 , I have a IH 16 now I run on my 656
my folks had a 550 in wet hay it wouldn't send it past the beaters, the 650 worked well slow 1 st gear in a case 2090 then upgraded to a international 720 lots more capacity could travel in 2nd then bought a new Holland 892 huge improvement same tractor twice the tonnage per hour the wider cutterhead makes the cropmat thinner requiring less horsepower than the 650
Dedra Kuhn, the manual said 75 or 85 hp minimum. I usually have this on my 1256 and it does give it a workout. my dad has a ih 720 chopper too, was a very good unit for it's time.
