sad ending? He had an amazing life! As an old man, he went to lie down on the couch after dinner (at his son's house I believe) and didn't wake up. Not a bad way to go if you ask me.

I agree, it would have been great for him to live longer but I wouldn’t say anything was sad about his life!

I just took a peek at the rest of these videos from this channel and all of them say “sad ending” or “tragic ending”. It's quite amusing how some users on UA-cam tend to include phrases like "(sad ending)" or "(tragic)" in the video titles or comments, even when the content has no relation to such emotions. It's clear that they do so solely for the purpose of clickbait, baiting viewers into watching their videos. It's a common tactic to grab attention and generate more views, but it can be deceiving at times and sets false expectations. It's always good to approach such claims with skepticism and not let ourselves get too carried away by these clickbait tactics.

Among other things, he was a musical genius. On his show, guests would try to stump him by presenting him odd and exotic musical instruments, sometimes instruments they had invented. Within seconds, he would master the instrument and began to play tunes on it.

I remember as a kid that Steve Allen challenged Ed Sullivan for Sunday night supremacy opposite each other. They were big rivals in the 1950's. You were either a "Steve Allen" fan or an "Ed Sullivan" person. But you couldn't be both. I was a big Steve Allen fan. He was SOOO multi-talented and witty. Ed Sullivan didn't have any talent for anything at all!! But if Ed Sullivan didn't exist, a thousand impressionists would be out of work! 😅

I credit Steve Allen, more than anyone else in the television industry, for inventing much of the format for late night talk shows. My college grade point average would have been better, had I not prepared for the next day's classes by watching the Steve Allen Show. Steve put more humor into my life, as well heightening my love for music. What other talk show emcee has been a major composer? Current hosts are a mere shadows of Allen, Paar, Carson and Leno. Oh, oh. I forgot Ernie Kovacs - also a dearly-missed Renaissance-type person. RIP, Friends. You knocked 'em dead like no one before or since.

He was described as television's Renaissance Man, and I think that about sums him up. I hope that THE MEETING OF MINDS will be available on DVD. It was brilliant.

I remember Steve also had a talk show that aired in the late 60s in Los Angeles. I can’t swear it showed all over the country but it was on around dinner time- I used to watch it when I was in high school and I graduated in 1971. they were not repeats. Anyway that’s why I remember when the show was on. He was always so funny, respectful, bright and intelligent. Never a dull moment with Steve! Very multi talented and very gifted man! I loved his laugh which he gave very freely! He wrote so many songs it’s just incredible. I don’t think he ever had music lessons he was able to play the piano by ear is what I always heard.

Yes, first called the Steve Allen Show, later just the Allen Show. I went to many of the show tapings at a small studio on Vine street in Hollywood. It was syndicated across the country, showing at different times, but as noted by Doxie, in the LA area 6pm time zone.

That may have been his Westinghouse syndicated show. That show was broadcast on Ch 11 in NYC and I was an instant fan. Steve was ahead of his time and really was the forerunner for shows like Late Night w David Letterman, which I also was a great fan of.

Steve Allen claimed to have written 8,500 songs during his career ... but nobody seems to be able to name any of them! Steve was one of those celebrities that I always liked but I never understood why? Maybe because if Jayne saw something great in him, there must be some hope for me, too! Seriously, Steve had a real knack for finding new talent and given those people a start!
    Bye-Ho, Steverino!

He was knocked down by a driver who was backing out of his driveway. Steve, Jayne and their son had lunch at his sons house then went for a walk when he was knocked down. Steve got up and said "some people will do anything for an autograph". A few hours later he died in his sons home.

I first heard of Don Knotts on the Steve Allen show. Knotts always played a role of the little nervous guy. Also Louis Nye as a sophisticated bon vivant named Gordon Hathaway. And Tom Poston as a fellow who couldn't remember his name.

I was lucky enough to correspond with one of the regular performers on"Meeting Of Minds"..Mr.Joe Earley..years before he appeared on Mr.Allen's"Meeting Of Minds"..Mr.Earley had created, written and hosted a minis of kids educational tv specials"Come Along"..where he portrayed famous men from history and he talked with a group of kids either in recreations of the setting of Christopher Columbus' ship,Dr.Alexander Graham Bell's lab, etc or on location at Sagamore Hill,L.I.,New York..the home of former US General and NYC Mayor and Police Commish turned US President:Theodore Roosevelt.

One of the most brilliant comic innovators of all time who died peacefully seated in a chair. Unless death itself is tragic, his life was a triumph and he nurtured an entire generation of great comics. Did you tag his end with “tragic” just so his fans would wade through, as I did, this badly written and badly read and unworthy synopsis of his life?

    My favorite tv skit.
He came out on stage wearing
    swimming trunks. The stage hands
smeared canned dog food all over Steve. Then they let loose a bunch of dogs. Next, he was on the floor with all of the dogs licking the dog food off. The punchline was: "Help! One of them is biting!"

In the late '80s I got to meet him while he was dealing with his cancer. I was working at Monticello - home of Thomas Jefferson where he was doing a shoot. I took him on a tour of the house and in between takes he would rest up on the 2nd floor in the guide's library. He had a constant stream of one-liners going and I think it was the overflow from his rich, creative mind. Hi son was working on the crew - he was very tall and blonde. It was a memorable and precious experience for me. I believe he was a Capricorn, like me. IMHO he was not only the creator of the Tonight Show but the best host it ever had. He was hysterically funny and willing to do outrageous things for a laugh.

The bulk of American television , particularly soaps opera, is a vast wasteland, because writers write before they have enough life experience to inject any wit or wisdom. They present salacious material in a crude manner and use jargon which is highly regional - namely East Coast big city talk. This is understandable, since most network offices are located in Manhattan. And the big ad agencies are major buyers of time on the networks. Performers like Steve Allen and Johnnie Carson had a broader following across America and consequently sold more product. Madison Avenue lives by ratings, which are questionable as to their accuracy. I'm a retired marketing manager for a Fortune 500 company and believe advertising revenues from television will fall, as the internet becomes dominant with the younger consumers who will represent the majority buyers in tomorrow's market. It's already begun and advertisers ignore internet viewers at their peril. I'm a senior citizen now and can't remember when I last rushed out to buy something I saw on a TV broadcast, but I use eBay, craigslist and Google's search engine when shopping nationally and locally. They impart important info the TV ad doesn't - how to get there, what the hours are and something about the vendor, if it's a new source to you. Even ratings are important. The days of slogans, jingles and nebulous ad claims are over...period.
