  • The Nintendo Playstation changed gaming history as much as the Switch has done. This is the story of how Nintendo created its greatest rival and the only surviving prototype.
    The collapse of this unusual partnership in 1991 brought a new player Sony Playstation, which to this day dominate the home console market.
    You can see, touch and play the Nintendo Playstation at this year's Retrospillmessen: retrospillmesse...

      Imagine if every game on SNES would be a pixelated mess like the PS1 games, which looked great at the time, but are ugly as hell for todays standards.
      Most SNES games on the other hand are timeless because of the gorgeous pixel art

      CDs and DVDs were extremely fragile. I never actually had any DVD-based game I had become unusable (I've never played a CD-based that was non-emulated, they were a little before my time) I've only had a very small amount of DVD'S become useless. I would frequently have issues when I rented games or DVDs though as people wouldn't take care of them. I would also cringe when I would visit some one and they would out a DVD down on the table and let it sit on the part the reads. Blue Ray's actually fixed this, they are very hard to scratch unintentionally, even if you are being stupid with them, they need force to scratch. Blue Ray's we're pretty good. The pros to CDs and DVDs was that they could store a lot more data than catridges at the time and we're extremely cheap to make. The Switch supposedly has a 64 GB catridges in the works which could hold more than even a duel layered Blue Ray (though there are quadruple layered Blue Rays that hold 128 GB but they aren't common.) The problem with cartridges is there price as they have always been really expensive to make, Blue Ray's are really cheap to make.
      Basically CDs and DVDs would scratch like crazy but Blue Ray didn't. However with cartridges are even more durable than Blue Rays and they load much faster than Blue Ray's, they just cost a ton more.
      The Switch had to go with cartridges due to it's size, also a disc reader would drain the battery faster. I am happy that the Switch uses catridges, I just wish developers would order the bigger ones.

      It was an add on, not a full console. I don't know why the prototypes were all in one, but I don't think they ever planned to sell such a system on the market. Sony wanted to receive almost all the royalties from CD games. Nintendo would still get 100% of cart games and SNES sales. Even if Sony had it their way, their add-on would still be dependent on the SNES.
      I never heard about Sony wanting the rights to IPs. What games/series were they?

      You are conflating two separate projects that came out of the deal, both of which were prototypes: the Super NES CD-ROM, which was meant to be an add-on to the main SNES system, and a separate standalone console called the Playstation, made by Sony, which was supposed to be a Hybrid that played both discs and SNES cartridges right out of the box.

    I am not sure about that conclusion. It is equally true to say that Nintendo working hand to hand with sony would have entaled Nintendo to be slowly "eaten" by Sony. Regarding the true story that is Sony discretely tried to make Nintendo sign a contrat that was completely to Sony's advantage. From that point of view, Sony was very sneaky and maybe Yamauchi was totally right to make that descision. You could rename this video in "The descision that saved Nintendo from becomming a little part of Sony" Would that be good? Well i think in the end things are doing pretty well For Nintendo AND Sony, so no real mistake in the end...

    • @corey2232
      @corey2232 6 років тому +5

      Why don't you elaborate some, like what does "a lot of control over Nintendo's IPs" entail?
      If it meant Nintendo would have to split profits on those IPs for games developed for the Nintendo Playstation add-on, that's but a minor issue compared to being throuogly trounced by the PS1 which destroyed the N64 by selling 104 million units compared to 33 million units, and then getting trounced again with the PS2 selling 157 million units (most all time) compared to the Gamecube's 22 million units.
      Considering system add-ons never sold well, with the Sega CD being the most successful only selling a couple million total, Nintendo losing some IP control for that platform is NOTHING in the grand scheme of things, especially compared to over a decade of getting their asses handed to them, and losing the top spot (hell, by the PS2 era, they lost the #2 spot too). The Playstation & Playstation 2 dominated worldwide, moving massive amounts of software (which means massive amounts of liscensing fees Nintendo lost out on) that DWARFED whatever miniscule money Nintendo may have had to split by just honoring their contract with the Playstation add-on to the SNES.
      If you or anyone thinks that isn't Nintendo's biggest mistake, you're insane. Financially, it was without a doubt their biggest mistake. Combined with their second biggest mistake in sticking with cartridges for the N64, it lead to 3rd parties abandoning Nintendo in droves, which just further lined Sony's bank account. Square used to be one of Nintendo's biggest supporters, and when they left to develop Final Fantasy 7 for the PS1, it made Sony the #1 destination for 3rd parties to flock to.
      Nintendo's president Hiroshi Yamauchi was so pissed, he promised never to work with Square ever again. It took until he retired for Square to even consider working with Nintendo again, finally releasing the spin-off Crystal Chronicles for Gamecube near the end of 2003 as a test run. Even still, Square has avoided supporting Nintendo home consoles with core entries in the Final Fantasy series (or others like Kingdom Hearts, and usually only releases certain Dragon Quest games in Japan only. Even still, it took quite a long time for 3rd parties who followed Square to ever bring their main entries to Nintendo consoles, while still working closely with Sony (and even Microsoft).

    • @soulripper31
      @soulripper31 6 років тому +1

      It would have given them partial ownership of all their franchises... The gameboy sold 118 million units and the GBA 83 million units (despite being replaced by the DS after a mere 3 years on the market). Nintendo was doing just fine and posting higher profits than Sony until the Wii U / 3DS days... Sony has nothing on Nintendo, even to this day. With the Switch Nintendo will once again post record breaking profits very soon. Square is also bringing Dragon Quest 11 (which will come to the West), Dragon Quest Builders 2, Project Octopath Traveller, The World Ends with You: Final Remix and who knows what else to the Switch.

The magazine clipping stated that there was to be an onboard FX chip, so that CD games could take advantage of advanced rendering and shading (Starfox on CD perhaps?). So, sadly, anyone who tries to develop home brew games for this unit (you know it's going to be clone consoled at some point) they won't be able to make said proverbial Starfox CD game.... UNLESS.... they do what SEGA did (32x). Simply make a game cartridge that contains the necessary APIs, Chips etc... and the CD will have complete access to the necessary resources. Or they can finagle the existing system somehow and find a way to add FX to it.

    Sony would have done the Playstation regardless of this deal, Nintendo was smart enough to back out of this as Sony would have had rights to Nintendo properties for a LONG time! Meaning they could make their own console and be able to make Mario/Zelda etc games for it!
    The GBC/GBA/DS/3DS/Wii and now the Switch has proved that Nintendo didnt need this deal and they have continued on and are the only console developer from the 80's that are still going strong, not only that but have more than enough cash to handle many many fuck ups.

Sony goes on to dominate the next 3 out of 4 home console gens. I wonder how things would be different now if Nintendo and Sony stuck together. Would the SNES CD be a hit? Would Sony and Nintendo continue to work together? Would they eventually merge into one massive Japanese electronics/gaming giant?

      I'm not sure if the Switch will be considered a 9th gen system or 8.5 gen, but either way it's not strictly in the 8th gen like the xbone, wii u and ps4
