32, degreeing in SI and working as a Power BI Data Analyst, but I'm not liking it a bit. I'm thinking about at least dip in CyberSec to see if I like it.
OTW: "Theres a lot of in-depth Linux books, but nobody reads those books" He's exactly right, ive been learning Linux for 2 years and never wasted my time reading a Linux book thats full of everything because I know at the end I would understand nothing. I bought "Linux Basics for Hackers" honestly just to support OTW. Didnt think I would make it past the first chapter. I finished it in two days. And it has been invaluable; and also just a good experience because you can tell he has a passion for this Linux, just as I do now.
Oh god have you seen the Linux+ book from CompTia? That thing is bigger than a dictionary it’s actually insane lol OTW’s book is way better and more digestible.
I’m 47 yrs old & for the last ten years I’ve been dipping in and out of Linux & CL all the while never really taking it seriously. David, your channel has really inspired me to really delve into this craft. A big thanks to OTW and other guests you’ve had on your show.

Great introduction to Linux. The best thing what I heard was 'in future videos'. I think this can be very useful serial 'Linux for hackers'. OTW is so generous to walk us through material that for him is like rooky level but still take the time and do it with such a passion!
@RobertVan-iz5lx I was commenting while still watching. And the end they mentioned it and also on the thumbnail is mentioned EP.1 - so the intention is there. Hope the first few episodes will get proper attention, so they’ll continue going through the chapters of the book. Hope for few videos on bash scripting :)
@@davidbombalgood to hear that you are covering the whole book because some time reader find difficult to understand some of the terms and this will make easy for us to cover the book
@RobertVan-iz5lx - Be grateful for the free knowledge shared generously. Avoid greedily demanding more; it's not an appropriate display of gratitude. Reflect on this: "Dictum Sapienti Sat Est" - "A word to the wise is enough." - Thanks for the Wise Knowledge you share. @davidbombal
As one of the many subs on here looking to get into CS I just wanted to say thanks David and Occupy The Web for simplifying things. This is why I love your content.
Such a clear and concise explanation of some common Linux commands. No holding back, just simply sharing what you know to be helpful and useful in the hacking space. Thank You to both you and your guest for sharing your expertise!
I'm absolutely buying this book. I'm in college now going through a Computer Science degree, and you two have been invaluable in really helping me grasp what I am learning. Thank you so much
Thanks to these resources I recently shifted from data engineering to cybersecurity. As I already had strong knowledge of python, sql and network security, my transition was quick and smooth.
This is a perfect series for people leaving windows with some linux knowledge but not total Linux knowledge. This is great for an aspiring Debian linux fan. I’m watching them all
I love this guy. He obviously gets joy from doing what he does and his conversational way of presenting his knowledge makes learning really easy and enjoyable. Also David just lets him go without unnecessary interuptions
The dreamteam! Looking forward for the second part. I like the combination of the two topics, talking about hacking (like the password lists), while also showing around the Linux system. This makes it entertaining and educational at the same time.
Thanks to both of you for sharing your experiences and knowledge. And for preaching low cost educational opportunities. As I’m pushing 50yo my body isn’t up for next level challenges but my brain will soak up any info , knowledge I can get ahold of. Your videos alone are a wealth of knowledge backed by your guest’s real world experiences . It’s a great place to start and constantly revisit. Thanks for all you do for everyone!
Thank you so much for this video! I’m learning bash and scripting right now. I’m also using Linux as my main OS to force myself to learn more. Absolutely love these videos!
This is one of the best intro presentations of the Linux shell environments, basic commands, and directory layout I have seen. It explains the 'why' behind a lot of things. Great work. I'll refer Linux newbies to this.
This is beyond awesome. Just started dipping my toes in the CyberSecurity field and I’m in owe of how fascinating and diverse it is. And you guys just became my “mentors” so to speak haha. Keep the awesome job guys, greetings from Venezuela
Such a great video! I read Linux Basics for Hackers a few years ago, probably when you made your first video with OTW. So thank you both for this refresher for me, I really appreciate it and there is such valuable content in this video! I'm going to reread the book and rewatch this video again to catch up with my friend Linux! I can't wait and I'm excited to see the next video! You two, who are in my TOP 5 teacher/pedagogue with Chris Greer and Rana Khalil (whom YOU introduced me to, I will never be grateful enough to you!). Nice work as always David!
Last week I started studying for the LPI Linux essentials certification exam. Any explanations given in this video are some of the best I've ever heard. Buying that book!
You guys are the best, very easy to understand. I have nothing but great feedback, thank you for continuing to share knowledge and I look forward to seeing more of your videos
I got my basic A+ certs in 2007, joined the Army and did IT as my specialized training g. Being a Reservist that never deployed, I never used that training and other factors kept me from going back to school. I've held many different jobs since then and always wanted to dip back in. Watching your videos has me thinking about actually studying and trying to get certs again.
As someone who is studying cyber security in university this is a greater overview for me to relearn the important points about Linux thank you for this free course! much appreciated :)
Great to hear about this book. It addresses the thing I keep running into; tutorials always have a very high threshold (assuming you already know the basics), OR they deep dive without you knowing why
I bought the book a few months ago and read the first few chapters, but things in life came up and I had to take a break (was planning on picking it back up next week actually). And then saw this in my feed. Perfect timing to get refamiliar with the first chapter while I'm wrapping up some stuff or driving around. Thank you David and OTW! You two are my favorite two teachers and seeing you together is always a treat!
Late starter here, as i have been trying to study up on many other parts of Networking, i have bought the book and find it very informational. Bought the book many moons ago and let it sit in the back till i am ready... Now i am ready and so glad you are doing the videos... as i see your on the fourth video beyond this video... so i had to back up after watching the fourth video... thought video was going to be a interview Q&A... so glad it was more than this. I have been working on the Networking side of things and wanted to go deep into Linux.. been working on it... and now with the video(s) things are looking very clear. So because of the fourth video...and the now the other video's, i have ordered the books that David has been holding up... PLEASE KEEP THE VIDEOS ROLLING... looking forward to more education... i actually have been following along and testing the commands out.. very good Information...
Just started my Hacking journey to build a valuable skillset, and change from web developer to security field. Thank you both its excellent, got my vm running kali it took some fault finding lol. Have the book so keep it coming brothers.
Even though I am not into hacking, but use linux as a software developer, this is one of the absolute best introduction videos I have seen. I actually learned something new about the underlying infrastructure even with 15 years of experience 🙂
I bought "Linux Basics for Hackers" honestly just to support OTW. because the tutorial you made with OTW are excellent and I want to learn more. I hope you make more Video on the following lab activities: Lab: Host and VM File Exchange, Linux File System, Terminal & Shells, Linux Maintenance & Info Commands, Linux Navigation & File Management, Linux File Permissions & Process Mgmt, Network Scanning with NMAP, Grep and Cut, Your First Attack w/ Metasploit. Also, I would recommend to others your classes on Udemy. They are excellent. OTW mentioned training his students where and how he does it.
I have been using Linux for years and taken college courses in it. That being said, I still was able to pick up a few pieces of awesome information from this video! OTW is a wonderful teacher as well! I have been loving these videos
Ok I bought the the two books on kali linux and I install the virtual box it took me a couple of tryis but finally i got kali in a virtual box and I want to thank you for this type of video that give to the people hope and inspiration to continue learning . Thank you again. 😊
I too read the book till chapter 7 (bash scripting) and It's the best book for learning basics of Linux, literally I learned so much of Linux in just 7 chapters, Hats too to both of you legends....
Im that person who dreams with being a Hacker and starts with a lot of passion and than get discouraged because I dont know where to start but now that I found you guys I start to have an idea and I apreciate your videos and your time thanks to both
I already have the book, I have already read it, but doing this with OTW in person is much much better. Thank you very much for this David, you are a great person.
Seriously I recently started getting into linux and been downloading torrents and all sort, this is the best tutorial i found so far. Please continue with this series. Thank you again. Great stuff ❤
I understand about kali being the hacker's distro. As you have said all of the tools are built in. Having so said, I'm glad that you are not dogmatic about distro use. I've become rather accustomed to the Windows_like aesthetic of the Zorin GUI
I am a Twenty-something (low end of twenty) and I've always loved computers but I'm embarrassed to say its only now I'm only now being aware of what you can do with the right knowledge, WHICH IS ACCESSIBLE TO ALL.
"You gotta have the Linux skills, you gotta have the Networking skills. Those are two fundamentals you have to have to be able to function in this world." - Occupy The Web
There's a few issues with this book that I really feel need to be highlighted: * Snort is no longer in the Kali repos since its been deprecated for quite awhile now making one of the chapters impossible to follow with present day Kali * The recommendation of using pip install is a really bad practice that's even warned against in the recent blog posts for Kali 2023. * The recommendation of adding Ubuntu or PPA repositories for extra software is a big big nono and specifically mentioned NOT to do in Kali's own documentation because it will break your system's ability to update: these things really should be addressed and highlighted and I would encourage you to recommend an update or 2nd Edition revision to correct these glaring flaws. Outside of that I don't really have other issues with the book but beginners and people new to Kali NEED to be aware of these downsides to the book. My comment keeps getting deleted so I've removed the reference links to prove what I'm saying about python and adding 3rd party repositories to be accurate but this can be verified on the Kali website in the recent blog posts and in the official Kali documentation
I ran into the same issue with snort. You can install it, its just a bit of a process and can be off putting for a total beginner. However, figuring it out will teach you a lot of new Linux skills. Also, doing research and applying it is a big part of "hacking" and IT working in general.
I think you don't need to add the Ubuntu repo to your primary source list....you can add it to the complimentary source list you can create yourself in the sources.lists.d folder
53 years old, had a stroke and had to start again. I have run my own IT systems and services company for 21 years. My Linux was always enough to get by, until now. I use it on everything that is important now, Linux, this is the way.
Such a great video. THANK YOU. This 1 hour was exactly what I needed. I just started his book and this video is a much easier way to learn. THANKS David and OTW
I have some knowledge of Linux, but still, this video gave me a refreshing view and some tiny information I didn't know, and that gives me more confidence when using Linux. It's a great and very comprehensive course for those who are new to Linux, in terms of explaining and showing the fundamentals of Linux in a basic way.
Dear David sir, 😊 after some time Everyone stop such informative course type series because of less views and like and low reaches of crowd, and I can understand, these things can lower your moral and motivation. But I request you to Please don't stop this series, because everyone is not longer dedicated, but few of us a need such kind of contant 🥺, so I request you to complete this series for those few subscriber who are genuine to your contant, channel and for ethical hacking 😊
Thanks David, I love these videos with you and OTW, I will be showing these to new Linux users who have an interest in ethical hacking, great starting point for noobs. Much appreciated. Thx
Bryce Canyon in the Juniper advert? Great place to visit. Bought all three OTW books recently for me and my son to plough through. As OTW mentions, your Kali Linux in VirtualBox video is the best method for setting up Kali instead of viewers/readers following the outdated (published 2019) instructions in Linux Basics for Hackers.
I love this series I thank you for it This guy is great and love how he teaches you . i have huge server enterprise and this will help me start from the beginning its the kinda server in cold room . stands nine feet high i have hard time knowing where to start and so on . this helps greatly
This is great I got the book and really trying to get over the first hurdle and coming across this video just made that hurdle so much easier, thank you both.
Perfect timing, I just ordered the book 3 days ago, waiting for delivery 😊 Thanks both David and OTW, love what you do. EDIT: And the video content is brilliant too, just watched it, covered all of this but even at the basic level there's still always something new 👍👍👍
I look forward to more of these. Thank you. I have this book, and am fairly proficient with Linux and BASH, but there are still nuggets in the video that help clarify some things. For example, I didn't get the real difference between 'service' and 'systemctl', so it was helpful to hear that the latter is just a newer, better, way of managing services.
This video was gorgeous it finished in a blink😂💔 thank u so much David and thank u OTW for this helpful video I just put a schedule to read Basic Linux for Hackers but with these videos I will have a great combo by watching these videos and read the book chapters it will help in theory and practical😍 all love and respect ❤
Great video and also a Great book! I picked up a copy in 2022 and completed it during my christmas break. Hes spot on - I never read my college textbooks cover to cover but with this book, it was easy!
I would like to see a conversation of you(David Bombal) and network chuck talking about how to set up your own proxy systems and ways to hide yourself using tools and strategies.
i would have watched this sooner if everyone and there brother didnt have the same exact titles. God its hard fishing through it all. great video, wish i had watched it sooner.
A big thanks David and OTW for this initiative. I asked my team members to follow with me this course to gain more skills and listen interesting stories at the same time ;) 本当にありがとう(^_^)
Awesome there's a video series on this book from OTW, ty for making that happen David. I plan on getting this book when I have the money just to have a physical copy. PDF libraries just aren't the same.
Hello Mr. David, first thing first thank you for all of your videos. Its a great video to someone like me, i been searching how to learn hacking since i was 16 and now i’m 29. What a long time but thank God i just found a completely Guru for myself. You done a great job. Send my regards to Mr. OTW, we all the viewers hope you and Mr. OTW can make more and more videos for helping us. Thank You Mr. David and Mr. OTW. From Malaysia ❤

Have the book so keep it coming brothers.
Even though I am not into hacking, but use linux as a software developer, this is one of the absolute best introduction videos I have seen. I actually learned something new about the underlying infrastructure even with 15 years of experience 🙂
Thank you so much for this! I needed this so badly. Definitely will be following this series and buying the books.
I am currently reading the book from OTW, and having a video of what I've read is just really nice to have. Keep it up!
Thanks David for this, occupy the web is such an amazing teacher and no ego
So thankful for everything you and OTW do. ❤
You're welcome!
@@davidbombalbig thanks to you
I found this book in my local National Trust library on sale for 50p. I couldn't believe it! An amazing book.
Thank you very much for this David, you are a great person.
my mind was about to explode. i was surprised i finished that in 1 hour straight... long way to go for me.. thanks for this kind of content
Seriously I recently started getting into linux and been downloading torrents and all sort, this is the best tutorial i found so far. Please continue with this series. Thank you again. Great stuff ❤
David...man you're a legend in my book...years of consistancy. Thank you Brother!
This video is amazing and the secret guy knows how to teach -- Thank you so much for the video and the book - Praise from India
So much practical knowledge. That's how you teach stuff.
Thank you OTW and David.
Hoping to see your next videos.
Do glad to hear you state that it's not always best to get the 'latest and greatest'. My viewpoint as well!
Another great! This is fantastic for people getting off the ground. Great to see you David and OTW!!!
I loved the content, his way of explaining is easy to comprehend. I would love to see more and especially how to land a job in this field in 2024
Always wanted this type of a video from you
Is it a hands-on demonstration of tools and concepts? Or is it all theoretical stuff?
Great Book! I refer to this book all the time.
"You gotta have the Linux skills, you gotta have the Networking skills. Those are two fundamentals you have to have to be able to function in this world." - Occupy The Web
Great stuff David sir , this knowledge is supreme
There's a few issues with this book that I really feel need to be highlighted:
* Snort is no longer in the Kali repos since its been deprecated for quite awhile now making one of the chapters impossible to follow with present day Kali
* The recommendation of using pip install is a really bad practice that's even warned against in the recent blog posts for Kali 2023.
* The recommendation of adding Ubuntu or PPA repositories for extra software is a big big nono and specifically mentioned NOT to do in Kali's own documentation because it will break your system's ability to update:
these things really should be addressed and highlighted and I would encourage you to recommend an update or 2nd Edition revision to correct these glaring flaws.
He actually mentions the Snort issue in the video
A Great video David, hope to continue this training. you are a start. Thanks so much.
53 years old, had a stroke and had to start again. I have run my own IT systems and services company for 21 years. My Linux was always enough to get by, until now. I use it on everything that is important now, Linux, this is the way.
I think Bombal show is the greatest show for hacking enthusiast. Thank you Bombal.
This class is very informative. Just listening to this class, I had to order his book from Amazon. I love his teaching technique
This file system demo is really helpful to see which files go where....noice 👌👌
Dear David sir, 😊
after some time Everyone stop such informative course type series because of less views and like and low reaches of crowd, and I can understand, these things can lower your moral and motivation. But I request you to Please don't stop this series, because everyone is not longer dedicated, but few of us a need such kind of contant 🥺, so I request you to complete this series for those few subscriber who are genuine to your contant, channel and for ethical hacking 😊
126k views in 6 days is quite outstanding by youtube standards...
Fact
Thanks David, I love these videos with you and OTW, I will be showing these to new Linux users who have an interest in ethical hacking, great starting point for noobs.
Much appreciated.
Thx
Bryce Canyon in the Juniper advert? Great place to visit. Bought all three OTW books recently for me and my son to plough through. As OTW mentions, your Kali Linux in VirtualBox video is the best method for setting up Kali instead of viewers/readers following the outdated (published 2019) instructions in Linux Basics for Hackers.
Thank you, David! Another great video!
EDIT: And the video content is brilliant too, just watched it, covered all of this but even at the basic level there's still always something new 👍👍👍
Amazing 🎉… I literally almost gave up on checking out Linux on UA-cam till I found this video . I enjoyed this ❤
This is awesome so far. I want to learn everything I need to know to be successful in Linux, cyber security, and Linux. thank you.
Thanks for sharing this so useful, entertaining content for us , move forward !
David ... you are so generous and kind to share valuable information that make changes someone life .....
This video was gorgeous it finished in a blink😂💔
thank u so much David and thank u OTW for this helpful video I just put a schedule to read Basic Linux for Hackers but with these videos I will have a great combo by watching these videos and read the book chapters it will help in theory and practical😍
all love and respect ❤
Great video and also a Great book! I picked up a copy in 2022 and completed it during my christmas break. Hes spot on - I never read my college textbooks cover to cover but with this book, it was easy!
I would like to see a conversation of you(David Bombal) and network chuck talking about how to set up your own proxy systems and ways to hide yourself using tools and strategies.
Great content David and OTW - best UA-cam channel for this type of content
David Bombal ... You are the Best🎉 Thank you for this free course.. And keep releasing more free course😅

Awesome there's a video series on this book from OTW, ty for making that happen David. I plan on getting this book when I have the money just to have a physical copy. PDF libraries just aren't the same.
Fairly early, Thank you David 😊
Thank you for watching so quickly :)
Shout out to OTW, "Linux Basics For Hackers" is my favorite linux book aside from "A Practical Guide to Ubuntu Linux".
