In the film, Kyle Reese takes on the Terminator with little more than stolen clothes, a shotgun, a few pipebombs, and a pipe. He finally dies while blowing up the Terminator torso. Here, he dies in 2 seconds after falling off a windowsill. Give me a fucking break, Mindscape.
34:09 Kyle Reese: Come with me if you wanna live. 42:37 Kyle Reese: Sarah! Sarah Connor: Reese. Kyle Reese: This way. 43:32 Kyle Reese: Come on, mothercrusher.
Totally, the sega genesis version wasn't even mentioned in the AVGN review! It just so happens that the only game he didn't talk about was also one of the best ones!
You just have to love those silly sound effects in these games. Sproing! :D Yeah I know it's easy to make fun of them. Anyway nice video. It's always fun to check out your videos & see some games, that I haven't played yet or played sometime in the past.
Yeah. The game is not bad overall. But dear God, the levels drag on for an eternity. And only the last level with the Terminator endoskeleton is reasonably short. That is in comparison to all the other levels.
This game is tough as hell, and not necessarily in a good way. Terminators peek out of foreground obstructions, levels go on too long, and falling just an inch too far sends you plummeting past the intended platform... or any platform for that matter!!! And level 2 is a Level from Hell. Old Arnie has nothing on those blind jumps and ambushing police footers.
The cityscape driving scene is actually pretty cool. The building designs paired with the Mode 7 street effect (especially with the blue and black color palette) is pretty appealing. Reminds me of Batman Returns on Sega CD. Don't know why the NES version has you finish the T-800 with the hydraulic press and this version with Kyle's explosive. It's like they had to split the simplest shit between the two games to make them distinct.
Nice, go back in time and shot all your possible allies. Sounds like a brilliant idea! XD Wow, it's so boring! I had to fast forward most of it. Why having a few long, tiring stages instead of several shorter and fun stages? :o
44:42 In the movie, Kyle Reese was dead at that point. But the Terminator wasn't quite defeated yet. They left out the part where Sarah crushed the robot under a hydraulic press.
Lets review this game fairly. First level, while being very long and hard is not 100% bad at all. Its pretty hardcore, unfair but really challenging. Its also features some nice things, like that laser beam in background, certain atmosphere, a lot of tension. Level design is not very good, especially that foreground crap blocking view, but idea was not entirely bad. Second level is...oh come on, its plain crazy. Roof jumpung, hordes of peoples with grenades, leaps of faith. Yes, still unfairly hard and not so atmospheric as first one, crazy designed. BUT THEN...pure shithell starts. Driving level. "search for sarah", driving again and final. Did everyone noticed, that starting from level 3 game feels way too pushed forward, boring and lack of any ideas? Personally i think they wanted to make one hardcore, noir game, but they invested way too much in first 2 levels and found that they running out either of time or money or space in gamepack memory. So they quickly made several more levels and released it as is. Just look in this Longplay - its takes 34 mins to finish first 2 levels and JUST 12 minutes more for everything else.
I understand that in the future the terminators are trying to kill you, but why is everyone trying to kill him in 1984? Seems just as bad as the future.
My only explanation is that if nobody was after him then the game wouldn't have any enemies for you to fight in the past. But the police were after Kyle in the movie at various parts so that part kind of makes sense. But why do bullets bounce off the police officers right?
I get why everyone hates this game, but honestly, the controls are what confuse me the most. They're far better than the NES version, but you still can't aim in 8 directions like in of course, Contra. Did Mindscape deliberately program the controls that way because they thought the game would be too similar to Contra? And for those who think Journey to Silius on the NES is a good game, I'd say it's only slightly better than NES Terminator, but I cannot stand that game. Good music though, I'll give it that.
39:49 Only time you see Arnold in the game (not including full skeleton) and it's weird how he goes back into hiding in the room after you shoot at him.
I think what they shouldve done is to let you take control of Sarah near the end right after kyle reese dies shoving the pipe bomb into the terminator to lure it into the crusher to finally destroy it like in the film.
A prime example of a game that was destined to be something else until Mindscape got the Terminator licence and slapped it on this. OK, terminators and HKs shooting at Kyle, yes, plausible given the story, but then he's continually shot at by IDENTICAL hoodlums through IDENTICAL buildings, and followed by HELICOPTERS and GUNSHIPS!!! Ermmm call me picky, but that didn't happen in the movie! Plus why does the police station resemble a medieval castle/derelict hotel hybrid of some type with wanted posters of Lucadore wrestlers. The end chase in a YELLOW pickup TRUCK (possibly Bumblebee taking time out from the other robot franchise Transformers) with The Terminator (or Guile) riding what appears to be a Vespa moped (maybe a Faggio from GTA)......hilarious, and what! SARAH throws a grenade at the Terminator, which not only kills the Terminator but she technically kills Kyle! No hydraulic press, just dead the end. This game SUCKS with a capital SUCKS
8:07 I remember in the movie Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn) hunted down HKs from a moving dilapidated police car which got hit and flipped onto its roof with Reese inside where he wakes up in 1984 realizing that was only a dream
Drailton Lima de Andrade I prefer the genesis version also. Straight and to the point. The driving levels were a pain. On the nes version. Didn’t get too far on the snes. Sega and nes versions i beat. Sega Version is my favorite
Imagine that alternate timeline where Sunsoft had the rights to these games instead and we had some real top quality gaming. This is not that universe, and that is a shame.
Reading through the comments here, this game seems to get an inordinate amount of hate -- which is somewhat understandable, as it's certainly not *good* -- but I've got news for you people praising the Genesis/Mega Drive: it's a far cry from a great game, too, it just happens to have different fatal flaws from this one (too short vs. too long, nonsensical/annoying plot "missions" vs. nonsensical/annoying sound effects). Both are a far cry from Robocop vs. Terminator, a legitimate scrolling-shooter great, not to mention T2: The Arcade Game (a masterpiece, but obviously impossible to faithfully replicate on consoles). But both versions owe so, SO much to markedly better titles that came before: Duke Nukem (the non-3D ones), Robocop, Shinobi... Hell, if you want a better movie-licensed release on the SNES, give Demolition Man a shot!
Also: having (finally) finished the video, I can confidently say the "4th stage" (not really sure what to do with weird interludes; I'm counting them...) is legitimately good: neither limited ammo, nor searching in doors was a new mechanic by any means even back in '92, but the combination of the two forces players to a) explore thoroughly and strategically, and b) weigh the risk-reward proposition of taking on an enemy with gunfire vs. your fists. It would be gross hyperbole to call it "innovative" (it's not even casually innovative like Doom 2016), but this "Elevator Action"-inspired level does inherently work in a way that the others clearly do not. The final encounter, on the other hand, is a complete and utter design abomination. Yikes.
At least it stuck true to the movie in the end with Kyle getting killed you never seen that in other versions but it should have jumped to Sarah and a broken terminator getting crushed for a true ending
men, I've been looking for this game since I was a kid playing it once in an arcade game place and I never saw it again .. I would appreciate it if you passed me or put ul link to play it again ...

@Carson Alijah Yea, I have been using InstaFlixxer for months myself :)
Yeah… now I know why I was never able to do it 😅
In best AVGN's fashion we can say "They were too lazy to make many levels so they just made three longest and hardest levels in existence."
