Best Opera Moments....I had forgotten what a vibrant, rival to his Spanish colleague , Carreras was to Placido Domingo, in his youth.....Sills is a marvel.
Great to hear an early Carreras in a role well suited to his full LYRIC voice. Once again that exciting Edgardo/Enrico scene in Act 3 is cut & it would be great to hear Carreras & Elvira take it on. Elvira is just as superb here as on a LIVE Lucia from the MET with Sutherland 8 years later as well as when I saw & heard him in Prospect Park, Brooklyn in 1989. All 3 of these performances from Elvira were real show stoppers with him indulging wonderfully in Enrico‘s cabaletta holding the final G all the way to the end WITH the orchestra. What a world class voice he had & in his time, IMO, his instrument, for his repertoire, was unsurpassed. Merrill & Elvira are the champions in singing this aria even though, apparently the former called Enrico the worst baritone role of all! As for Sills she was still in pretty good shape here but even better when she sang LUCIA in Seattle 2 years before.
I find Elvira's voice quite throaty and rough to listen to... but he had a great instrument for sure. Just tended to overdarken and hinder his technique.
um.....Pablo Elvira - c'mon bro, way to kill it!!!! I used to have a video tape with him singing this at the Met - and I think this was even better!!!!!
gosh, what a time it was! Gee - i don't don't like who's singing at the met - I'll just go next door to City Opera and hear Sills, young Carreras, and Pablo Elvia do Lucia!!!!
This is from the opening night of the NYCO 1974 fall season, on August 28th. It was the first of two Lucia performances Sills sang with Carreras (the second was three days later on August 31st). Those were the only times Sills sang with Carreras in her career.
@@BestOperaMoments Sills almost sang 4 performances of Lucrezia Borgia with Carreras for Dallas Civic Opera in November 1974, but her cancer diagnosis and subsequent operation in late October prevented her from singing them. However, Carreras was already moving away from bel canto roles by 1974 ,singing mostly Puccini, mature Verdi and verismo roles. From 1974 to 1980 (the years Sills continued singing), Carreras sang at the Met 12 Bohemes, 9 Adrianas, 4 Toscas, 4 Luisa Millers, 4 Traviatas and 3 Elixirs. He sang only a few scattered performances at NYCO in 1974-75 and none after that. So, really, only Traviata during that time might have been a possibility with Sills.
La voz de Carreras en esos años era oro puro

Excellent performance. Wonderful that duo of Sills and Carreras.

❤❤❤❤❤
Jose, da solo negli anni 70 valeva da solo il prezzo del biglietto. Anche alla prima ed in platea....

I find it very surprising given that Carreras and Sills were both in high demand towards the end of the 70's... interesting

Che orore la Silverstein
Carreras mucho mejor en este rol que en el repertorio pesado de Verdi y verismo, ojalá hubiese cantado más Edgardos y menos Cavaradossis 😔
