Deep Fried Pork Intestines. You want to try and find a vendor or restaurant that makes the effort to clean out the intestines properly. That will take much of the funk out, and you will enjoy it so much more.
I grew up in Hong Kong, and the taste I miss most is the fish balls. I recall that there used to be a hawker right outside the school I went to, so it was pretty much a daily before school snack. I can't wait to go back for a visit.
Fantastic video! Love how you present the food with honest opinions. The "turkey kidney" that you had is actually turkey giblet or gizzard. Direct translation of the Chinese name of what you ate IS kidney. But what you had is actually the gizzard. Close enough, at the end of the day, they are all organ meat. Keep up the great work! Being born and raised in HK and now emigrated, what you presented sure brings back waves of nostalgia.
Thank you for the information, yes, I believe we went off the translation for that one! Thanks for watching and for your words of support. More videos to come soon!
Being a HKer, I have to say he knows all the right places for local snacks. All the places that I used to go! Here in Singapore, we have much less choices in terms of street food. Perhaps Old Chang Kee? But we have a very vibrant hawker centre food culture here.
Thanks for watching Billy. Hope this video brought back some old memories. As far as Singapore, we've spent a fair bit of time there and love the hawker centres!
I miss HK, spent so much time there in the 90's and 2000. Loved the food and the night life. This really brings back memories. Best times of my life. Want to take my kids there but with the riots and now coronavirus still waiting for things to go back to normal. Hope it hasn't changed to much.
I grew up in 70s Hong Kong and one street food I miss is 碗仔翅 (fake shark fin soup). There's also roasted chestnuts, steamed peanuts and steamed corn. Street hawkers used to sell these outside cinemas. They were the perfect movie snacks!
Hi Marty, thanks for your comment! Fake shark fin soup is delicious, and as far as the other snacks you mention, street vendors sell roasted chestnuts through Autumn and winter. As for peanuts and corn though, not sure I’ve seen those… I’ll have to keep a lookout!
Great episode, these very special street foods of Hong Kong are the sole products of HK for so many years, yet we cannot find anything similar or matching up in Australia, Canada, USA nor Europe. Thanks Sam for bringing us all the good tasty smells of HK once again in your well researched products. Well done !
Thank you for watching and for such kind words. I absolutely agree, many of these street foods are unique and are very special pieces of HK culture. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and I hope it makes you hungry to try these again on your next visit to Hong Kong ;)
Canada does have these items but they aren't sold on the streets. They can be found at food courts at Asian malls, specific stalls inside these malls and appetizers at sit down Asian restaurants.
Haha, this is literally the first time I see you not liking a piece of food. Great and funny video man, entertained me well! Also, 10:56 is the best way to describe you don't quite like something without sounding too offensive 😆
That's a good point James, think this is the first time ever it's been caught on camera haha. Thanks for watching as usual and for appreciating the puns! :D
On the 7th food, that looks like bird gizzard rather than kidney. That pig innards looks like the uterus, which was something fun to eat when prepared that way with its bright colour and crunchiness. As a child I had no idea exactly which organ it was, , until one day seeing it identified in a Fear Factor episode.
Hey Sam. That was a yummy video. I have not tried any of these 8 street foods but definitely I will be sure to try them on my next visit to Hong Kong. The Eggette, rice noodle rolls and three treasures are at the top of my list. The camera work and editing are top notch once again. Thank you Mr and Mrs. Evans. Cheers.
Glad you enjoyed the video Satish. I'm sure you will enjoy those three items (actually they are probably my three favourites from the list also!) Thank you as always for the kind words :)

I admire your courage to try the piggy intestine lol. the 3 treasures always my favourite coz it is a hell load of manual works when you do it at home. btw, the rice paper roll is indeed a staple of the street food. those rice paper roll filled with various ingredients that were only available in a decent restaurant back in the 70s & 80s definitely a popular street food to pick you up on the go :)
Thanks as always for the great comment! Haha the pig intestine east really my thing, but I will try it again at some point! The Cheung Fun is one of my favourite Street foods, so thank you for the information on it!

Another famous street food is imitation shark fins soup (碗仔翅), the “shark fins” are glass noodles but it’s the broth and other ingredients combined that makes it sooo yummy! May need to hunt for that as not all street stores have it but it’s delicious 😋
The place where you got your rice noodle rolls also sells the fake shark fins soup. The sign at the front of the store says so, just not sure if it's any good 😊
Great list but I think Beef entrails needs to be in there. It is like a stew with a mix of briskets, some intestines, radish. Add some chilli oil and it’s supreme
I may be one of the few westerners who likes pig intestines... I eat them when ever I'm in HK, mustard and chilli sauce, they are so good (imo). I'm still yet to try stinky tofu however.
Good on you Dan, I certainly will give them another chance, as I can imagine that when one is used to the gamey taste, they can be nice with the proper condiments. Stinky tofu is certainly worth a try, especially drizzled in a bit of chilli sauce!
@@HongKongHoods i think the stall that you went to didnt clean it properly. I believe they usually put the intestine up to a hose and flush water through it for a long time.. if they dont do that long enough.. you guessed it.. that is what the gamey bad taste comes from..

I have never had deep fried pig intestine as street food, but have had it in restaurants. The latter has a less chewy texture -- it's crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
I was living in Mongkok around 10 years ago. I saw oversea traveling TV programme shooting several times which talks about the stinky tofu. Usually they describe about it, then shiw a disgusted-feeling face then throw it away.
Indeed, it is a very popular breakfast food. We cover a lot of dim sum in our yum Cha episode. Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/71YsrUd4aWE/v-deo.html
Your intro is spot on and brilliant! Hong Kong does have the highest eat-lets per citizen in the world. That said, Hong Kongers' craziness and passion of food sometimes embarrass me (seems we don't care things other than our stomach)! So brave of you trying the street foods at Mongkok. We love street foods but I'd never buy from those stalls at those locations - hygiene is questionable (even their food might be clean, the heavy air pollution of the busy streets is not appetising). Also brave of you trying stinky tofu, pig intestine and "lo mei" - lots of locals avoid these foods. 😛
Thanks as always- I really love Hong Kong street food- it is very special and unique, and while the hygiene isn’t the best at some places, luckily the lo Mei place is spotless! 🙏💪👍
Apart from you, I haven't known any westerners who would like sticky tofu and pig innards. You are truly adventurous! Sticky tofu always looks so processed to me and personally speaking, it is not worth trying. Btw did you feel stuffed after eating all these street foods? Hope you were alright!

Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it. Yes, offal in this way isn't for me, although the innards we tried later in the video were wonderful! By Chilli BBQ Pork thin slices, do you mean like bee cheng hiang? They have a branch on the main crossing in Causeway Bay. Tried them often while on travels to Singapore!
@@HongKongHoods yes. My family calls it something else. Taste like squashed Char Siu. The one with chilli is good. As a kid my auntie bought us peanut pankcake in Tai Po. It was so good. Its the crispy one. Shame they banned food carts.
Pig intestine can be really delicious if done right. Yes, it can be an acquired taste but if presented in the right way it's not hard to enjoy. If the smell is overpowering then they didn't do a good job at cleaning it which involves a lot of work and oftentimes they cheap out on the process. The hint is when it's overly oily inside, they probably didn't clean it thoroughly. When nicely cleaned and fried and dipped in the simple soy sauce, the intestine provides great texture and mouth feel, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside and with right flavoring it can be heaven. It comes down to cleaning it right and frying it right. If over fried, it can dry and the skin has a bitter taste to it, like burnt toast. Some of the more exotic types can stuff it with sweet rice and other ingredients to diversify the flavor. To me the simplest is the best: when well cleaned and fried it provides one of the great food pleasures in life. Don't give it up yet, keep trying till you find the right one! Again, excellent work, Sam!
Thanks for watching and your awesome comment! When you put it like that, pig intestine does sound like it could be delicious, maybe I just haven’t found the right place yet! I will keep searching until I find one that is prepared and tastes like how you say!
Hi Alan thanks for your comment. It varies between stall to stall and shop to shop. With some, the staff and menus communicate in English, but on the other end of the spectrum, English is zero. Even in this case though, the staff have seen it all before and are usually experts in understanding hungry person sign language, so you can usually successfully get what you want!
I’m sure it’s good if you get it from the right place with the right sauce, and are prepared for the taste! You can find it at many street-side vendors through the city! 💪
@@HongKongHoods imo... to get things easier, don't go for the snail shaped ones from the get go.... look for one that's been fried in flat pieces like suckling pig skins... back then they accompany with canned pineapple but now may've changed.... the flat pieces are much less funky and more crispy....
I don't believe they have any meat in them (at street food stalls, the proper dim sum ones definitely do). However, be careful if you're a strict vegetarian, as they may have come into contact with meat-based broth.
@@AnwarKarimi-tc1xg I can suggest two great halal places that we've covered in these two videos: (Wai Kee halal restaurant in Wan Chai) ua-cam.com/video/HOM_3hEfHP0/v-deo.html (Islam Food halal restaurant in Kowloon City) ua-cam.com/video/8abORIePuTw/v-deo.html

One thing to note about the “turkey kidney” is that it’s not actually the kidney, instead it’s the gizzard, in Cantonese they call all kinds of gizzards “kidney” which is also very strange for a Mandarin speaker like me.
Really great video! You are a brave man eating all those local delicacies. A refreshing change from the normal hk must eats like egg tarts and pineapple buns!
Thank you for watching and for the kind words. I'm happy (and relieved) to report that the vast majority of these turned out to be way more delicious than I expected.
@@HongKongHoods many of the street food when I was little is actually don’t have anymore but the love of food Hong konger comes up with new tasty new food you should go to some of the small islands in Hong Kong they still have some old street food that you can’t get in Hong Kong island
It's pig's uterus and oviduct. Local delicacies. It is written in chinese as "生腸", which more than often people mistook it as intestines as it says "腸", but it really isn't... That said, the taste is not bad
I was surprised that rice noddles was included, it was very blend and definitely not my favorite. Also, there should be pig's lung, intestine, and liver in delicious soup/sauce at one of the deli. Egg thing was similar to American waffle, not my favorite, worst they were probably made from condensed milk like all pastries.
I would say Lung Jun is not a good choice of Street foods. They are somehow commercially successfully not bacause of they are doing good but they are cheap. For Pig Instestine and stinky tofu, I would say "Delicious Food" at the other end of the same street is a good choice.
Siu mai is the best!!! Oh man, you are more local than the majority locals as you had tried the deep fried intestine and braised internal organs without a clue. Please be mindful that you take your own risk when trying the street food. This is the common sense in Hong Kong. People either don't eat street food or prepare to take medicine or go to see a doctor in a worst case scenario.
Thanks for watching and for the kind words!..And although most stands are pretty clean these days, we agree, it's still best to use your judgement and caution when exploring street food!
Very nice video! As a Hongkonger, so surprised you know all these famous local street food shops in Hong Kong! Keep it up

Shame they banned food carts.
anyone knows what's the pig innards are at 10:33 ; this is actually the pig's ovarian tube, taste amazing if try without the sauce!!
From Japan then to Hongkong! Enjoy the food there.
The cuisines of the two countries are different but both very delicious!
@@HongKongHoods Try the clay pot rice!
That’s a great idea Marco! We may well look into featuring claypot rice when winter comes around again!
Is it easy to order HK street food in English? Great video. can't wait to go there
Hi Alan thanks for your comment. It varies between stall to stall and shop to shop. With some, the staff and menus communicate in English, but on the other end of the spectrum, English is zero. Even in this case though, the staff have seen it all before and are usually experts in understanding hungry person sign language, so you can usually successfully get what you want!
Chocolate pancake please! Actually Ill try it all. Great vid, learned a lot
The eggettes are delicious, and the same goes for the majority of the items on the list. Thanks for watching and for the kind words! :)
As an asian, i am excited to try that pig intestine 😆 why didn't i see them during our hk trips
I’m sure it’s good if you get it from the right place with the right sauce, and are prepared for the taste! You can find it at many street-side vendors through the city! 💪
yes the pig intestine was bit tough to break in to..... i was put off when i was a kid but got addicted after 10 y/o.... same as durian
Thanks for sharing William! Maybe I just need to try it more often to fully get the taste!
@@HongKongHoods imo... to get things easier, don't go for the snail shaped ones from the get go.... look for one that's been fried in flat pieces like suckling pig skins... back then they accompany with canned pineapple but now may've changed.... the flat pieces are much less funky and more crispy....
@@fatdoi003 Thanks for the tip, I'll look out for the flat type, and hopefully learn to love them like you have!
Any chance you could explore vegan options for tourists?
Thanks for the suggestion, we've had more than a few similar requests for this. Certainly something we'll consider in the coming months!
Siu Mai. Is that vegetarian? I am going there in november and would love to taste these.
I don't believe they have any meat in them (at street food stalls, the proper dim sum ones definitely do). However, be careful if you're a strict vegetarian, as they may have come into contact with meat-based broth.
@@HongKongHoods Thanks! Good to know. Not a Vegetarian, but a Muslim. But since Halal is hard to come buy i stick to vegetarian. Thanks again!
@@AnwarKarimi-tc1xg I can suggest two great halal places that we've covered in these two videos:
(Wai Kee halal restaurant in Wan Chai) ua-cam.com/video/HOM_3hEfHP0/v-deo.html
(Islam Food halal restaurant in Kowloon City)

@@HongKongHoods Thanks bro!! Will check it out!
The sub-topic of today's school class is about Hong Kong food. The teacher introduced this video to my classmates and I. I can see that you are very careful in making this video. Please bring more Hong Kong food to us! Thx 😋
That’s incredible, I’m honoured that your teacher would choose our video to share with you and your classmates! Hope you enjoyed it and learned something from it… and more food videos coming soon! 🙏💪
I miss the Hong Kong food, you are so brave to taste the intestine 😄
Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed watching us eat some delicious food! The pig intestine was not my favourite haha
dang now im hungry!
Thanks for watching!
One thing to note about the “turkey kidney” is that it’s not actually the kidney, instead it’s the gizzard, in Cantonese they call all kinds of gizzards “kidney” which is also very strange for a Mandarin speaker like me.
Thanks for the info! Good to know. Hope you enjoyed the video, and more on the way!
I love stinky tofu!!!! Oh, I miss that so much. I haven't found a place in US that sells stinky tofu.
We hope you can get back to Hong Kong soon to eat it here again!
The pig intestine is the best!!
I'll give it a little while and then I might have to try it again to see if I enjoy it the second time around ;)
What camera was this shot on?
Fujifilm xt4
@@HongKongHoods Very nice.
The animal taste of the intestine is the best part
We’ll have to agree to disagree on this one!
I buy that one's a week because very nice
Yummy! Thank you! :)
Hey, where is the soy sauce king fried noodle with bean sprouts ?
Great suggestion but didn’t quite make our list. Do you have a particular shop recommendation?
@@HongKongHoods Recommendation? Nope, I'm a HKer from the Caribbean 🤣I only remember the foods from my childhood in HK
As a local, I can't stand pig intestine and stinky tofu at all😂
I am surprised you take the courage to try both!
Thank you for watching Esther! I was surprised to find that I really liked stinky tofu… but pig intestine is another story 🤣
Your face !😂 my god lol
Hope it expressed the flavours adequately. Thanks for watching!
I bet the egg waffle was the only snack that was completely finished!
Not necessarily. I have a big appetite (although I was stuffed after filming this)
you are so brave
Thank you!
I love the pig intestines...
I wish I could. Maybe I need to give them another try from a different place!
Have you ever try snake soup?
Yes! Glad you found our snake soup video :)
Have you try stinky tofu yet smell bad but taste really nice
Yes, we tried it in this video. And exactly correct- smells bad but delicious!
@@HongKongHoods many of the street food when I was little is actually don’t have anymore but the love of food Hong konger comes up with new tasty new food you should go to some of the small islands in Hong Kong they still have some old street food that you can’t get in Hong Kong island
Would you like to know which part of pig it is when you ate the soy braised skewer?
Haha I’m going to say yes please, but I may regret this 😆
It's pig's uterus and oviduct. Local delicacies. It is written in chinese as "生腸", which more than often people mistook it as intestines as it says "腸", but it really isn't... That said, the taste is not bad
Five Spice Tripe is what I miss
Ohh that’s a good one!
Your face looks not use to with HK food but you can eat a lot
Thanks for sharing I Food Leveling
Certainly not used to all of it, but we were pleasantly surprised with some of the items on the list. :)
@@HongKongHoods That is fun bro and keep the good work and enjoy your channel😊
@@foodleveling Thank you so much for the support!
You forgot to mention turnip cake and roasted sweet potato
Also great snacks!
That is another place in Shum Siu Po with no smell from the Piggy intestine.
Would you happen to know the name or location of the shop?
Keep up the nice content mate, I really enjoy watching your content as a Hongkonger👍
Thanks for watching and for the kind words. Certainly more to come soon! :)
Thanks for watching!
I would say Lung Jun is not a good choice of Street foods. They are somehow commercially successfully not bacause of they are doing good but they are cheap.
For Pig Instestine and stinky tofu, I would say "Delicious Food" at the other end of the same street is a good choice.
Thanks for the info!
I think I will skip #3 deep fried pig intestine too. Others look delicious....
Yeah, unfortunately the pig intestine was a bit much haha! But yes, the others really were fantastic, HK street food at its finest! :)
Hi! Did you have any issues with authority for not wearing the facemask?
No. Face masks not required by law while eating
I like siu mai
Us too! Thanks for watching!
And fish balls
Very strong animal flavour 🤔….
#really?
#豬大腸蠻好吃😋😂😄
I thought so! I am determined to try it again though!
