Same here. I've tried many different blends in the 8 months I've been at this, but I haven't had anything with age on it yet. One day I'll get something from Pipestud or someone like that. Thanks for sharing this. Very cool👍
Jeff, I'm currently smoking Mac Berens HH Pure Virginia. Turns out I got lucky in getting a tin dated September 2015. So, it has a little age on it at 3.5 years. I've smoked fresh Pure Virginia and the flakes in this current tin are definitely darker and have a fruitier, earthier, more fermented tin note than a fresher batch. The flavor is delicious. Not so much if the grass/hay taste, as you noted, but a more earthy almost a musty or maybe a mushroomy flavor. If you want to try a very good straight Virginia, I really recommend the HH Pure Virginia. Cheers!
AT, thanks for the the info, Age and tobacco is an interesting facet of pipe smoking and its cool to get your experience on it as well. I love musty earthy tobaccos (Elizabethan Match for one) so if i get a chance I will be on the lookout for HHPV .Take care!
Thanks Beans, I will. I know you are a Viriginia guy, do you have much experience with aged tobaccos and How does Full Virginia Flake compare to Opening Night?
Very interesting review Jeff! Thanks for sharing this with us. Always interesting to hear this kind of comparison because as u have seen the diff can be pretty dramatic. I would love to try that aged Opening night as I also enjoy the newer stuff. Want to trade for some aged FVF? I have some 2009 FVF if you want? Hit me up if you are interested. Hope you are having a good week. Best wishes.
Hey Andrew, sorry for the late reply, I am totally up for a trade! I'll send you some of this as well as whatever you might want to try that you don't have . I'll get a hold of you later this week or early next.
I much prefer Opening Night, Union Square is more bready and woody to me whereas Opening Night fresh has a nice honey sweet hay with some sweet dark fruit notes from the reds. Just my opinion.
@@enigmatic_lee I’m glad you enjoy the continent and I’m happy to have you watch. Definitely let me know what you think of the tobacco in my opinion it’s my favourite Virginia next to Carolina Red Flake the original batch. I hope it turns out you like it as much as I do
@@aromatix5741 I just bought a tin of 08/2022 batch Opening Night and smoked it. I can totally get what you say the bready and depth of Union Square versus the fruity brightness of Opening Night. I fully agree that Opening Night is a more full spectrum straight VA because of that beautiful fruity and pleasant brightness added to its medium strength and quality virginia body. But this tin is kinda new, I believe it’ll get much more refined and well rounded as it aged. I think I’ll get a 8oz tin and throw it into my mason jar to wait till it aged. I’ve tried some bright virginia blend like Brunello Flake but it only gets my tongue brunt and way too sharp that I would like. Opening Night is quite a surprise found for me! Thank you, Jeff.
Awesome, that's great you agree and are enjoying the tobacco, as it ages Opening Night it will lose a bit of the honey and hay for a more dark fruit flavor, but that's what most Virginias do.
Interesting comparison. I've tried a few Virginia blends, but for some weird reason I'm still not sure if I can identify Virginia. The only Virginia I can say I really like are the ropes from Gawith Hoggarth.
@@aromatix5741 not many pure Virginias now that I think about it. Mainly a few VaPer blends. Happy Bogie and Brown Irish X from Gawith Hoggarth are my Virginias I suppose. What would you recommend?
For red virginia try Sutliff RC-515 , for Golden Virginia Orlik Golden Sliced and of course for a great flake with both Opening Night. You can't really go wrong with those. Brown bogie and Irish x are favorites of mine as well but they are dark fired virginias with some burly as well.

Nice comparison. How do you compare GL Pease Union Square and C&D Opening Night as a straight VA blend?

@@aromatix5741 I'll pick up one tin tmr to try it out. Thank Jeff, I'm a viewer from Taiwan and love watching your videos.

Jeff stupid phone screwed up. I actually said you really can see the difference in the color
Ha ha, Yeah I knew what you meant . Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. Come on by anytime, cheers!
Was that 2007 tin opened in 2007 or around the video timeline?
Hi Nathan, that tin was sealed until I opened it in the video last year so it was aging in the tin.
Nvm, just watched your other video where you opened it! Lol
Jeff extremely interesting. You really can't see the difference in the color can't you. God bless brother
