This was a terrific interview, but it also reminded me of one big truth about getting your book published with a traditional publisher: It helps to know somebody (that's how Emery found the agent who was critical to her reaching out to the more appropriate publishers). When you don't know somebody and are reaching out to hundreds of agents, most of whom never even acknowledge receipt of your work, well, that's a very lonely and frustrating and discouraging (not to mention exhausting) process to have to go through. Thank you, though, for a most informative and lively discussion.
We're so glad you enjoyed the interview! It can certainly help to know people in the industry but brand new authors are getting published all the time. You can do this!
Kelly, you presented yet another terrific way to get a novel out into the world. Thank you. Congratulations Emory! I'll follow your new release in November. I lost my older sister when I was 13 and like you, found my journals to be very helpful in not just making sense of my emotions, but setting them free.
Amazing interview. Exellent content. I've never heard anyone but Kelly talk about this potential path to publishing. I didn't know that it existed. One tiny critique: the edits were a bit jarring for me. I don't find it necessary to cut out the awkward parts and moments of silence. It feels better to leave it all in there, so that it's a bit more authentic. People are accustomed to long podcasts with little to no edits these days. I could have listened to this for an hour.
What I liked was her need for authenticity to herself before coping with "marketability" and other people's judgments. That resonates with me as well. Was it Emerson that said "To thine own self be true?"
I was super excited for this until I saw her 100k+ followers on IG. I feel caught in the chicken/egg battle of trying to grow an audience while also spending time writing my novel. Any tips for balancing the two would be much appreciated 🙏
Super inspiring and helpful for an author still searching for a literary agent after 36 email attempts. Nice to know that self-publishing can lead to a publishing deal.
Kelly, I appreciate your sharing this information! You are a superb mentor and I look forward to engaging your team in the near future. Take care

Thank you, Kelly and Emory! I needed to hear this. And I’m anxious to get my hands on a copy of this book. Sounds beautiful. Congratulations!!
