This is Musical Theater. You would have to google 1st base 2nd base, 3rd base, home plate.on a date. It is an American Baseball reference. This video is a Meatloaf classic.
In the 70's making it to 1st base meant kissing, 2nd was top action(above the belt), 3rd was bottom action(below the belt) and home base was going all the way. And having a radio in a big American car was the music and venue. That's why drive in movies were so popular among teens.
Still laughing at your reaction! Steinman was a musical genius and ML is one of a kind. That voice and the way he controls it and manipulates emotions…unmatched. Hard to pull your eyes away…. So much to love from these two!
Hi Sarah, brilliant reaction!! I loved it. You mention how the early part of the song went through many "vibes". The songs structure explains why. A solo electric guitars 10 beat riff sets the tone for the songs 1st Acts tempo (followed by 16 beats of Boogie-woogie-piano). The male lead vocal kicks off the songs first verse with a standard 16 bar verse. It then shifts to three 4 beat bars followed by a 2-beat bar. Making for an unusual 14 beat section. (the "bodies are oh so close and tight" bit). This s followed by an even more unusual 11 bar section. (the "glowing like the metal " bit). Up to this point, a brisk eighth-note tempo is observed throughout. Though, at times, with on and off-beat accents. With the new arrival of the female singer, the beat shifts again (the "Though it's cold and lonely" bit) to 5 bars, played in a 4/4 quarter-note beat This 4/4 beat shift makes the song sound as if it is slowing down. But it isn't. These "slower' 5 bars are followed by a return to for another brisk 22 (4-beat) 8th note' bars??? ("You got to do what you can" bit) Crazy stuff here! This is an amazing usage of beats, measures and bars. Yet it sounds perfectly accessible. When the song returns for Verse 2, the songs arrangement has variations compared to the first go round!!! The songs arrangement continues to evolve right up to its conclusion. You could teach a college course in songwriting with this song alone. This is simply brilliant. Apologies for the ramble, Cheers, RNB
A condensed teenage opera. This song ought to be required as a presentation to every teenager's health class. Not that it isn't a well trodden story but the song animates it is an appropriate time frame. That and it's fun.
Sarah...that was so much fun watching your reaction to this 1977 classic by Meatloaf (Who sadly passed away two years ago.) and Ellen Foley. The footage of the game being played is of American baseball and there's long been an analogy here in the US between running the bases of the game and love making.) I'm a retired wedding photographer. There was a period when this song would be requested at a wedding and when the song started the dance floor would fill with guests. All the men gathered on one side of the floor and the women on the other....like two opposing armies ready to attack. Then when the song reached the part of the alternating vocals between Meatloaf and Foley, the two groups took turns passionately singing their parts. Great job! Thanks from Boston!
I travelled a lot when I was working and when my oldest turned 16 I asked him to go to California on a trip with me as I had a convention to attend. So we went a few days earlier and was in the audience of the Tonight Show. The musical guest was Meatloaf and I was thrilled!! My son was like "what isa meatloaf"? He found out and it was great and a great trip!
Jim Steinman (Meatloaf's songwriter/arranger/pianist) and Meatloaf were both fans of opera. Opera style arrangements showcased going from movement to movement, not verse-chorus-verse style. You hit it on the head, this is rock opera. The sport clip was American baseball. Carla DaVito was actually lip-synching to the original practice spund track. Sarah, this was as beneficial to me as the treatments I'm undergoing. As usual, I thank you for your uplifting spirit, smiles, and chair dancing. My so beloved daughter is the keeper of my spirit, but since she lives far from me (for now), I so much enjoy watching other children of God like you. Stay well always. 💖🤩🌹😃😁
If this is your first meatloaf song, welcome to the fan club. There is so much more to explore. I wait to watch you appreciate more from this master entertainer. RIP Meat. We will in fact love you till the end of time.
Great reaction, Sarah!! I believe Meatloaf took that name from what they called him in his football playing days, but I stand to be corrected on that. Both he and the pianist/songwriter Jim Steinman passed away a couple of years ago (RIP to both). Jim wrote this amazing album of theatrical music with Meatloaf in mind to sing it, and they were able to bring it to life with the support of producer Todd Rundgren and toured it in the summer of 1978, where I saw it with about 3500 other fans in a small venue in Vancouver. Amazing concert, one of the best I have ever seen. Every song on that album, plus many more are worthy of reactions by you. I would suggest the title track, "Bat Out Of Hell" would be a great next Meatloaf song for you to experience!!
LOL Sarah, your reaction was priceless. This is one of the most creative, most outlandish songs and performances ever. Thank you for enjoying it so much. Almost like seeing it all over again.
My then high school girlfriend and I were in my car listening to this IRL. Everything was the same except we did "go all the way", but didn't get married, so didn't have to deal with that. We're still FB friends. His real name was Marvin Lee Aday. He got his nickname by his dad when he was a baby. He was pink and looked like a blob of meat. He had many movie appearances over the years. Including but not limited to "Rocky Horror Picture Show", "Fight Club" and "Wayne's World". This song was written by the late Jim Steinman He also played keyboard on this song. I wish I could have seen them in concert but sadly it never happened. I still have the "Bat out of hell" LP BTW they were BOTH regretting their commitment to each other. "It was long ago, and it was far away. So much better than it is today".
Thanks for Jim Steinman, who wrote the song. He was a beacon in the disco era. The whole album is amazing; my favourite is "Bat out of hell". All the best from from the Netherlands!
Hey, sweet Sarah. A friend of mine saw MEATLOAF live in the Netherlands in the 70's. He saw all the greats, but he said he never heard a better singer. MEATLOAF was just awesom. Thank you verry much for this one. Loved it. 👍💪❤️
it's baseball and i believe the announcer was phil rizzuto calling a yankees game. the whole idea came from getting to first base, second etc.....and then just as he was getting to "home plate" she demanded he declare he would marry her etc. hilarious.
Yes, and it's been said that Rizzuto wasn't made aware of the context until it was completed and he wasn't happy about it, though he may have changed his mind when the royalty checks started to appear. 1st, 2nd, 3rd are just milestones along the intimacy track while a home run refers to going all the way.
Sarah, this was a damn good reaction and I loved it! The old sports clip in the middle of the song is a reference to the American game of baseball. Way back in dinosaur days, guys would liken how far they got with a girl to the bases in baseball. There was 1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base and home plate (a home run, baby!). If you ever want to see a 70's cult classic musical, check out The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I believe that was Meatloaf's screen debut. You could probably just find his part in a clip somewhere.
I saw them do this, at this time, in my little hometown of Painesville , Ohio. A year before the old movie theater was converted to a nightclub.Meatloaf was so crazy that he had to go throw up on the side of the stage towards the end of the song. What a show ! Oh yeah, the opening band was a new upstart called Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, they were pretty good too 🤩
The sport was baseball, and it is used as a metaphor for the stages building up to sex. First base is kissing, and escalates to eventually getting to home, the actual act.
Rumor went around that between song Meatloaf had to hit an oxygen tank to catch his breath, because he put more into his singing. He wasn't a bad actor either with a part in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", and "The Roady" where he played Travis Redfish
You've nailed it! it is Rock Opera! The sport is baseball. To really understand the video, you'd have to know the sport, and the cultural significance of the "The bases" and the "Suicide Squeeze Play". Another thing that may be lost on you, is the first black and white clip of the guy selling pamphlets. The Video also shows baseball action that is not what is going on according to what the announcer is saying. The "bases" references are telling us how far he's getting with the girl. First Base is kissing. Second Base is doing things to the breasts. Third Base is petting the vagina. "The Suicide Squeeze" play in baseball is when the runner on third base attempts to steal home plate resulting in a point "or run", and the batter taps the ball away from the defenders to insure the run. In Slang, a suicide squeeze is when she pressures the boy into marriage in return for sex--with "squeeze" being slang for a sexual lover. To my knowledge, this is the first use of "suicide squeeze" in reference to the boy being pressured in this way.
Hot, humid, sticky nights in a small Midwest town on a sand bar in the crik with a large bonfire and underage drinking and smoking funny things. Someone would put this on their car stereo. Guys sang guys part Gals sang the gals part Great great times and endearing memories. Loved your reaction. Bravo!!!
The baseball section is a reference to a euphemism that teenagers sometimes use to describe what happens in a car late at night. Wikipedia has a page called "Baseball metaphors for sex" that explains it.
By now, I hope you have an understanding of the connection between the baseball clip being described by the game announcer's reference to the player reaching first base (kissing), second base (feeling her up), third base (heavy genital petting), and reaching home plate (full intercourse). Teen boys would ask each other, "How far did you get?" Answering 1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base, home plate (home run) told the whole story.
i heard one reactor complain about not feeling the chemistry in that kissing part once.. as if youre supposed to anyhow.. its just supposed to be a couple fooling around in a car.. smh
Love your reaction, but, there must be a setting in your sound settings that mutes the audio of the song a bit whenever you talk. It is totally not needed and is very annoying when trying to listen to the song. Please try to turn that feature off. See it a lot when somebody is starting out. Hope you see this as a helper to your channel and not the opposite.
MEATLOAF was not just a Musician ... He was wholly an Entertainer . HUMANITY was blessed having witnessed those werks .
This is Musical Theater. You would have to google 1st base 2nd base, 3rd base, home plate.on a date. It is an American Baseball reference. This video is a Meatloaf classic.
The song of all songs with the performance of all performance .... such INCREDIBLE chemistry .... anyone who hears this loves it forever....
In the 70's making it to 1st base meant kissing, 2nd was top action(above the belt), 3rd was bottom action(below the belt) and home base was going all the way. And having a radio in a big American car was the music and venue. That's why drive in movies were so popular among teens.
I think those references have a much longer life than just the 70's
Jim Steinman wrote all of his material, incredible songwriter.
Pure performance art. Great Jim Steinman production. When this album came out every woman I knew owned a copy, just for this song.
Meatloaf was an actor also, he was in the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Musical theater was what he was exceptional at.
Still laughing at your reaction! Steinman was a musical genius and ML is one of a kind. That voice and the way he controls it and manipulates emotions…unmatched. Hard to pull your eyes away…. So much to love from these two!
Glad you enjoyed it.I 82 and still love him.RIP Meatloaf
There's not a single person who was a teen, when this came out, that doesn't know Every word and sings along Every time...... me included
Not only that, but we set the dance floor on fire acting out the song.
🎶💃🎶
Class of 79
It's one of my favorite songs as a teenager. His Bat out of Helll Album had all great songs on it. You should listen to Crying Out Loud.

'Hold on before this song goes any further than this', lol, OH it's going further!
🤣
Hah!

Showed this to our son when he started puberty. The ultimate cautionary tale!

That was fantastic, Sarah. So much fun seeing you experience this amazing video and song for the first time!
"Let me sleep on it" is a double entendre, implying that he wanted to "sleep" with her before deciding whether he wanted to live with her for ever.
Jim Steinman (Meatloaf's songwriter/arranger/pianist) and Meatloaf were both fans of opera. Opera style arrangements showcased going from movement to movement, not verse-chorus-verse style. Baseball metaphor is hilarious, rounding the bases for a home run. 😂😂😂

Meatloaf was a fantastic entertainer. This song was released on his Bat Out of Hell album in 1977
Thanks for Jim Steinman, who wrote the song. He was a beacon in the disco era.
The whole album is amazing; my favourite is "Bat out of hell".
All the best from from the Netherlands!
This was when cars still had bench seats.
Hey, sweet Sarah.
A friend of mine saw MEATLOAF live in the Netherlands in the 70's.
He saw all the greats, but he said he never heard a better singer.
MEATLOAF was just awesom.
Thank you verry much for this one.
Loved it.

Old Man Meatloaf could really sing ! God Bless !!!
"It was long ago and faraway and it was so much better than it is today"
" Hot Summer Night / You Took the Words right of My Mouth " another masterpiece.
This was fun watching your reaction to a really special song.
I saw them do this, at this time, in my little hometown of Painesville , Ohio. You got it!
One of his biggest hits. I love Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad.
Old music to me and cant deny it holds up. Love your reactions, very thoughtful.
Pair of Dice by The Dashboard Light
have heard some Meatloaf on a vinyl record years ago.. but never seen or heard this... its sounds like Elvis on steroids.
Superb song and an even better reaction from you! ❤
Sarah, your reaction was funny and priceless! 😅😂
Still a fantastic song. So glad i got to see him in '99.❤👍🤘
Rumor went around that between song Meatloaf had to hit an oxygen tank to catch his breath, because he put more into his singing.

Don't forget Fight Club!
the album tells a story, check out "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (original video)" , it's a continuing video from the same performance 👍
You've nailed it! it is Rock Opera! The sport is baseball. Ellen Foley sang the female part but it's Karla DeVito in the video.
Miss Meatloaf ❤❤❤
Best reaction, I've seen them
The whole album "Bat Out of Hell" is great
Great reaction !!! ❤
Too much fun!
Hot, humid, sticky nights in a small Midwest town on a sand bar in the crik with a large bonfire and underage drinking and smoking funny things. Someone would put this on their car stereo.

You should listen to meatloaf's "I'd do anything for love (but I won't do that)"
He was a big boy and his dad called him meat:)
The baseball section is a reference to a euphemism that teenagers sometimes use to describe what happens in a car late at night. Wikipedia has a page called "Baseball metaphors for sex" that explains it.
Revolutionary hit.

The sport was Baseball.
If you liked that song, you'll love Bat Out Of Hell
You're pretty ❤
You know that everything you've said about the performance is also actually true for your reaction? 😊
Love your reaction, but, there must be a setting in your sound settings that mutes the audio of the song a bit whenever you talk.
