    If you're into the old warbirds, Planes of Fame is the best airshow there is. Spectacular.

    My father flew a P-38 F5 reconnaissance over Germany in the European theater of WWII. He was part of the 7th Photo Reconnaissance Unit. He loved the 38 - said it was the best plane ever made! He used to tell me how it’s abilities saved his life many times. In one mission, he was under attack by 5 enemy planes and managed to out-fly them all (remember F5 Reconn had no guns, just cameras) and get away. However, he took a lot of fire and lost one of his engines. He had to make an emergency landing in Sweden where they had never seen a P-38 or it’s “modern technology” before. It made quite a splash in the papers. Today, the yoke of his P-38 is on display at a museum in Sweden. Sadly, my father passed away in 1976, but not before he took me to an air show in Chino, CA., in 1975, where a P-38 was part of the exhibits, and I guess because he was a former 38 pilot, they let my father climb into the cockpit and he took me with him (I was a young boy at the time). I’ll never forget the joy and delight on his face as I saw him seat into that chair. He was one with that P-38! You could just see the memories pouring across his face... My father and that P-38 were like two old deep friends/partners reunited again after so many years. It was incredible and that moment left a lasting impression upon me that I’ve carried my entire life. If you aren’t already a member, and you love the P-38, I invite you to consider joining the National P-38 Association (p38assn.org) as there’s so much to learn and know about the 38!

    My uncle joined the army in 1938, he was 16 years old. Before Pearl Harbor he was in Burma with the Flying Tigers. A captain at 19 years old. His funeral was at Chino field, the old Cal Aero Field, where he took his flight training. His ashes spread from a B-25 over the Pacific.

    • @mwmcbroom
      @mwmcbroom 4 роки тому

      My uncle joined the Navy after high school, flew an F4F in the Pacific Theater. He and his flight leader flew off their carrier one morning for a routine patrol -- and never returned. It was 1944. So I guess it's fair to say his remains sre scattered over the Pacific as well.

    Nothing beats the sound of a radial engine

  • @davecrupel2817
    @davecrupel2817 5 років тому +9

    For those of you who have yet to hear these engines in person, the videos dont do them justice.
    These engines dont pitter patter like you hear in the video. These are not 2 cylinder Model T's chugging down the street like little river dinghies.
    These are 12 cylinder 27 liter _Rolls Royce Merlin_ engines.
    They are *war* engines.
    They are *powerfull.* And they _sound_ like it
    They grumble.
    They growl.
    They are loud.
    They rumble the ground and the air around them.
    They are roaring predators praying for blood and carnage.
    From a distance, you can hear it.
    From up close, you can feel it.
    That sound probably contributed to the great reputation this engine got. Because there truely is no sound like it.

    • @DESTRUCT0NAT0R

      @@michaelcourtney2814 IF.....you fukin limeys would set aside your arrogance and embarassment and LEARN what PACKARD had to to to build the Merlin on an assembly line in mass quantities you would know what was done !!!! Suggest you Google the book "PACKARD as an AERO ENGINE BUILDER" Packard Merlin by Robert J Neal available FREE on line and LEARN what PACKARD had to to to get the merlin in production. Written from the Notes and diary of Jesse Vinvent the guy at Packard who was incharge of the program !!!! Vincent also designed the WWI Liberty V12 engine, the A2500 & The M2500 the WWII PT Boat engine. And Vincent designed the supercharger for the M2500 and he designed the supercharger used on the Mustang version of the Merlin, V1650-3 or -7 or -9 !!! The US's version of the 2 stage 2 speed intercooled with the Bendix carburator, which ALL PACKARD merlins used long before the Brits used them. In 1944 alone PACKARD built 1/2 of the 55.525 Merlin engines they built !!! A rate RR could only dream of. Of the 150,000 merlins built PACKARD built the 55,523, Ford UK built 33,000 giving 88,523 of the 150,000 total merlins built. RR themselves built less than 1/2 the total !! Did you know that ???? Or are you toooo embarassed to admit it !!!! Also every single Merlin engined production Mustand used a Packard built merlin !!!! NO British Built Merlin was used in any production Mustang. The reason PACKARD was contracted with to build the Merlin was FOR THE BRITS !!!! As an OFFSORE shadow factory away from the war zone !!! And PACKARD came through !!!!!!!! PACKARD also built 14,000 of the M2500 PT Boat engines at the SAME time !!!!! Research and LEARN the facts RR and the Limey Bastards do not want known !!!!

      The Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre ( www.omaka.org.nz ) has a Mark XIVe that comes out to play at the Classic Fighters Omaka air shows ( www.classicfighters.co.nz ). It made its first public appearance at CFO 2015 after being repaired - it was badly damaged in a take-off accident 19 years earlier - and was a show stopper. I got my best-ever desktop photo when John Lamont brought it around the corner of the spectator area in an eighty-degree bank, fifty feet off the ground at 240 miles per hour. I was, and still am, rapt with the photo - I didn't even need to photoshop it.
      Add the sound of that Griffon to all the Merlins - and Allisons - that were there and people like me were walking on air for the whole weekend.

      @@wilburfinnigan2142 Yeah, well. There were only 10 Super Corsairs build and the half of them ended racing. Sea Fury aren't that numerous too. True, there are plenty of 3350s around. But the Griffon was used too in racing since the 70s...
      When it comes to the potential of the airframe - by the time of construction no one imagined that a Mustang could run 550 mph at sea level. There was a refining process during the use as a racer and that would have applied to the Spits too. But they weren't available in the US at the time the Air Races restarted and rarely if ever sold as surplus for private owners. If they would've done that there would be more Spits around than today actually are - the most late Spits were scrapped in GB in the 50s or used in third world countrys and used up or scrapped there...

    With the Mustang the RAF fitted the perspex cockpit cover to increase visibility in a dog fight, and the RR Merlin engine which made it into the classic fighter it became. Before that it was a bit of a dog.

    • @bazonka1
      @bazonka1 5 років тому

      The British fitted the Malcolm hood on the P51C which did increase visibility. The full bubble came on the D model and was an American design.
      The Allison was fitted in the original mustang because the Brits initially wouldn't release it to the Yanks.
      The P51A/A36/ Mustang 1 was not a "bit of a dog" as you say. It performed very well below 15 thousand feet, had an excellent payload and served through the war as a ground attack fighter.

      AndreiTupolev If you're talking about the Zero, it is only flown 2-3 times a year and is meticulously maintained while on the ground. And it is flown well within its limits. Mr. Hinton has said that it is not a happy airplane if flown over 200 knots.
