Pretty absurd to me down in the US as well.
Entitled rich creeps who won’t even give the poor in their state the money allocated to them from the federal government.
But they can give it to rich people on the sly to build volley ball courts at their kids school.
While the people it was meant for continue to try to scrape by… or don’t.

Unfortunately, we here in the U.S. have a loud, entitled, insulated minority totally incapable of critical thinking and totally convinced they are right. From the clip you showed of the utter happiness of No. 1 passing in Ohio, there were lots of senior women and men who were overjoyed. As someone who is also senior and, like them, was a young adult when safe, legal abortion care was unavailable, when I as a woman I could not get a car loan without my father or spouse as the principle signer (meaning he got the credit rating, even though I paid off the loan.) Those elders, those women and the men who love and respect them, who love their female children and grandchildren, do NOT want to go back to those days!! So, no, this issue is not going away, and with this victory, we will fight and vote harder in 2024!

Conservatives try to pretend that abortions never happened in "the good ol' days," but that's merely a fantasy. Abortions indeed happened, but they were done in secret and often used dangerous methods that risked the life of the mother. So banning abortions now won't bring back that idealized fantasy world that never actually existed. It'll just mean that women will be forced once again to seek out secret abortions and dangerous abortion methods.
And the people with the means and resources (the wealthy and privileged) will still able to find safe abortions if they want because they can just use their money and power to pay providers to keep their mouths shut or travel abroad to get abortions in countries where it is legal.

The abortion issue is not a women's issue. You can't get pregnant without a man. And men don't want the government stepping in and making the decision for them. And fathers don't want the government telling their sons and daughters what they are going to do. People know that an unwanted pregnancy has a dramatic effect on the couples lives their dreams and their potential careers and future income. You’re saying that the abortion issue is not a women’s issue because it’s the men who get the women pregnant but let me ask……who’s the one getting pregnant? Who ends being pregnant for 42 weeks (sometimes more, sometimes less), going through lots of hormonal changes, and physical changes, as well as going into labor which can often be long and painful, and even postpartum depression afterwards? Who exactly is going through that? It’s not the whole family…..it’s the one getting pregnant aka the WOMAN so, actually the abortion issue is a women’s issue. I mean my sister had a baby at 23, and the only thing about her pregnancy that impacted the whole family, was the news of her being pregnant and then getting her ready for her baby shower, and bringing the baby home. Unless you’ve experienced the women in your life being pregnant, and you actually helped them…..you have no position to say that abortion is not a women’s issue.

Abortion is a medical procedure that exists; it would need to be banned outright in order to get rid of it. But you can't do that because it has other applications besides contraception, and all the reasons a woman might want or need one are confidential information between her and her doctor.
Men also use the services at Planned Parenthood as well. Education about STDs, child care and preparing to become a parent. Many people don't have family to rely on so PP provides greatly needed assistance. STDs increase in areas where these services are eliminated.

The issue of such an ammendment is that state legislators would have to ratify, unless Congress passes state conventions, like in the ammendment that ended prohibition, where they knew the Temperance movement pressure on state legislatures was overwhelming. So if a right of privacy(the actual argument behind Roe) was proposed and passed in congress and subject to state convention that would settle it because more than a third of states would vote for it in Large numbers. For example the right of privacy is not in the US constitution but it is the the Florida one, that is why De Santis could not move with abortion on that state(from this video that is a good thing). However such wording would be dangerous because there are numerous federal agencies spying on americans on a regular basis and they couldnt have something as Katz doctrine applied to surveillance.

  • @k-matsu

Claire is right, and though it is particularly true on abortion, the principle holds true regardless of which "ethnosocioeconomic group" we are talking about.
The Republican Party has adopted a number of positions on issues that - in their effect if not their intent - cause uncertainty, anxiety and emotional or even physical pain to these groups on an almost constant, daily basis. If you are an LGBTQ individual living in Florida, for example, it is not POSSIBLE for you to ignore the impact of Ron DeSantis' policies on your daily life. No matter what other things a Republican candidate might offer or promise, when it comes time to vote, the accumulated impact of all that uncertainty and stress will make the decision pretty easy.
Republicans may not want to admit it, but in spirit and principle they have become the White Christian Nationalist Party. Thats the only real consistent thread holding all the MAGA splinter groups together. Until they look in the mirror and see this truth . . . there's no hope for the GOP except in majority white christian precincts.

I have five daughters as well as a daughter-in-law, a wife, a mother (who's near a hundred years old), and a granddaughter who's going to be born in less than two weeks, and in order to protect their rights from draconian laws being enacted that have a deleterious effect on them receiving quality health care, I shall never vote for a Republican candidate ever again in my lifetime. However, that being said, the last time that I voted for a Republican candidate was in 1972 in a local election in Chicago.

It’s a simple minded notion that “life begins” at conception? There is no way to define “life” and the human cells are just as “alive” before conception as after conception.
What exist at conception is the same thing that exists prior to conception, i.e. a potential human life. But we don’t even know whether it will survive to birth. Nature herself might destroy that egg. We don’t know which eggs will survive or which eggs won’t survive.
The idea that life begins at conception is a religious belief. You’re entitled to it, but you’re not entitled to force it on me. Especially as it makes no sense.
The separate sperm and egg cells are a potential human being. The fertilized egg is a potential human being. Up until the point the fetus viable on its own it is a potential human being.
Therefore, a common sense definition of the beginning of a human being would be when it is viable on its own. This is my own religious belief, I don’t care whether or not you believe it , and I’m not trying to force it down your throat.

I feel like it doesn’t matter anyways, because the moment they’re born, those precious lives become “your problem”, “freeloader”, “noisy thing”, etc.
I had a friend who was chased out of church from the pulpit because her children got a little loud. One greasy old guy told my mother to “shut that thing up” when my baby brother was crying.
I could go on, but yeah - tells you everything. The whole “life begins at conception” stuff is a cover. Not for all of them of course - many of us were raised to truly believe this stuff with the most compassionate parts of our hearts, & ignore the truth, the hypocrisy.

If life begins at conception why do we celebrate the day we're born and not the day we were conceived?

This issue isn't about life exactly. It's about personhood, the criteria that make killing wrong: sentience, biological autonomy, the will to live, and everything that's taken away when a person is killed. Embryos and fetuses don't have that. Babies, in a rudimentary but real way, do. There's no harm in not being born.

Watch out there @davidtrindle, you are speaking too much common sense and scientific facts for the Pro Life constituency. Also, that freedom to decide independently what is right for you isn't acceptable to the conservative evangelical Christian Republicans. They like to be told what to think even if it's a lie or a conspiracy theory. Oh no, I forgot Republicans and their political leaders NEVER lie to attempt to manipulate others to benefit themselves.
Thanks for your astute statement of facts. I'll be voting to protect equal civil rights for all Americans.💙⚖🇺🇸💙
