    In this video you will see Aluminum Tig welding tips on an outside corner joint, inside corner joint, and padding beads on scrap aluminum.
    Balling or rounding the tip prior to welding seems to help with better cleaning action.
    I dont always take time to ball the tip but lately, i have been experimenting and rethinking details like balling the tip in an effort to get better and provide better welding content.
    hope it helps!

    Figure out how to feed wire?
    Like that time I ran out of filler rod so held the MIG torch in my left hand and the TIG torch in my right? That was some proper wire feeding!

    I learned on a classic 60Hz sine wave machine. The only thing you could change was the balance. The ball on the tip was pretty much the diameter of the electrode. You also only had the choice of pure tungsten or zirconiated tungsten.
    With new inverter machines we are truly spoiled.

    I'm welding some pontoons, mostly 14 gauge but also some 1/8th for deck mounts using 3/32 and a #8 gas lens, would I be better off using a #6 or even smaller instead?

      Be careful what you use, some chemicals form really toxic gases when lit up with a welding arc. Safest is scotch brite and some alcohol. Acetone is fine too but not the healthiest to be handling all the time.

    Hey Jody, I’m having some trouble with some aluminum round to square or rectangular tubing, my arc wanders everywhere and it’s just not going well at all. Could you do a video with that? Thanks. -Mitchell

    • @cavemanjoe7972
      @cavemanjoe7972 5 років тому +1

      If that happens, you want to bump the max amperage. It's usually because the aluminum is cold and it takes more heat to start the arc smoothly.
      It can also be a contaminated tungsten, and/or your tip grind being too rough or your grind marks going around the tungsten instead of in line with it.

    • @GraduatedIn
      @GraduatedIn 5 років тому +1

      CavemanJoe I try to clean as much as I can, I raised it up to 145 or 150 and it’s definitely a lot better, the largest cup we have is a 8 gas lens, and it’s frustrating because I can’t get that far down there and the puddle sometimes tends to favor one side of the 2 pieces of the weldment

    • @GraduatedIn
      @GraduatedIn 5 років тому

      CavemanJoe I do grind it correctly, but I’ll have to ask mr woods what size torch it is so I can get my own kit

    • @cavemanjoe7972
      @cavemanjoe7972 5 років тому

      @@GraduatedIn
      In the case of the round stock to square tube, the puddle will favor the tube because it doesn't have as much thermal mass as the barstock, so it heats up faster. Compensate for this by angling your electrode slightly more into the bar stock, and wash the puddle into the tube as it evens out before you make the run.
      Almost forgot, a lot of arc wander on aluminum can also mean you're using too much cleaning action. If you're at 80%, try bumping it down to around 60%. (Or if your machine's balance references EN and you're on around 20%, bump it up to around 40%). You have to play with these things until you get a feel for it, especially with different thicknesses and types of stock. Keep a little notebook with things like this in your welding toolbox so you can look up settings for certain jobs on your machine, it saves a lot of time.

    I really appreciate your note on stickout. I see so many people welding mild steel with a #16 cup with huge stickout for no reason at all. Finding that happy medium for cup and stickout saves so much gas and coverage is still adequate. Also, the same people running huge cups on stainless that pull off early to get pretty colors aren't getting the point of the cups and gas coverage.

    • @minecraftbers
      @minecraftbers 5 років тому

      You should never heat paint up to a temperature that it smokes or burns if you don't absolutely have to and even then you should have the proper protection, a fume extractor and preferably a welding hood with and airbox. The paint releases chemicals that gives both an increase risk of cancer and asthma along with other nasty stuff. And aside from the health risks it's also not great for the weld results. So you shop is probably just saying that to be able to pump out more work at the expense of the workers.

    • @dovid916
      @dovid916 5 років тому

      Possibly posture/fatigue later on if you spend large amounts of time welding. Primarily, you want to ensure that you're comfortable to ensure the quality of your weld is maintained throughout the pass. Other than that, it's personal preference. I would ensure that if you're stick welding, or another that produces BB's that you properly protect yourself with a hood that has a back on it, so that they don't fly up, over your mask, and down the back of your shirt. Ask me how I know!

    • @weldingtipsandtricks
      @weldingtipsandtricks  5 років тому +1

      I would say as a rule of thumb..that stickout should be far enough to see the tip of the tungsten and not much further except when needed to reach tight spots. usually that means the diameter of the cup. so a #6 cup is 6/16" or 3/8" and that is a pretty good stickout for a #6 cup

      2% lanthnated. May not be the absolute best but it works really well and is a good all rounder. Jody sells them on the store.

      @@bodkinofnurk8898 thanks. I recently tried green and I'm not liking it. It gets really brittle after it's been heated up. I've tried red too and somebody told it's not right. I'll try some white.

      I settled on 2% lanthanated after testing most everything else. It might not be the best for every specific application, but it seems to be the best all around for AC as well as DC. it holds up to high amperage on AC and starts pretty well at low amp DC for thin steel
