As someone who grew up as a Cavs and Pistons fan *thru my pops*, I can speak on this without bias (I also worked for the NBA years ago too). The JB hire is good for rebuilding teams...he is notorious for not getting teams, once they good, over the hump. First off, JB is stubborn in a bad way that ruins the team...he clings to his starters so hard that he physically and mentally cannot bring others off his bench into the equation that can help the team (unless he's forced to due to an injury)...this happened after we went thru a injury stretch last year and banished the bench players who got us to the #2 seed (like 3-point shooter Sam Merrill, who was HOT during that stretch). JB will also play or even START dudes who do not deserve playing time, like Okoro, Niang and Dean Wade who must have naked pictures of him in uncompromising potions. He also is too buddy-buddy to the players he loves (Garland, Allen, Mobley and Levert), never benching them when they need it. He is notoriously bad at in-game adjustments and always gets shown up by lesser coaches. He never never beats good teams when things are on the line. And JB always gets beat on critical out of bounds plays and challenges he passes up on in the middle of games. And his offensive schemes are 1985 bad...only damn pick and roll plays? WTH? He sucks past getting a rebuild team to the promised land (the playoffs)...and once that team gets them there that team will succeed despite him--but not far enough to make noise.Everyone in Cleveland will tell you this too.
Id argue he also favored Niang too. I will never get over him playing Niang in that Magic series for 30 min a game when in 5 min Morris had 3 points and 5 rebounds compared to Niangs final of 2 points. Cant even defend either

He had bad substitutions, he favored Niang being on the court at the expense of winning games, he had 0 offensive plan beyond gib rock to spida, he treated the vets like rookies, and he had 0 idea of how we would lose games. Like he held a team to under 100 points in the modern nba (we had 80 some) and his response as to why we lost was "our defense wasnt enough". Yeah the defense was the issue, definitely not our terrible offense

To be honest he was on the hot seat since our loss in the 2023 playoffs. There was reports he also lost the locker room, cant recall if that was accurate though, so take with a grain of salt

I don’t hate the moves… they needed veteran scoring and shooters and they got it. Tradable contracts. I think this gets them a step or two in the right direction. Once they are a playoff team with a young core, better FA options will become available. They’ll figure out who of the young players will develop as a must keep.
With the draft next year Id say the Pistons have built well. No shooters, all athletes. Just focus on losing imo. Get those lottery odds. Do some trades to get a more balanced roster next season.
