You should be building more of the regular towers. The green area they produce is your energy production

I've always found it easiest to bring the entire map to one height as much as possible, preferably somewhere in height 18-20, then grid up the towers at maximum range from each other, have a cannon right between each of them. The cannons' range ensures that any egg or spore that lands gets taken care of before it can do any significant damage.

You had to many unused cannons
If you don't have unused cannons, you're playing the game wrong. There is only 1 point where you should worry about having too many unused weapons and that is when you're trying to set a good time. In all other cases, if it a lack of unused weapons that is the problem because that means that you have at most half as many weapons as you need.
