One of the best of all your videos I've seen so far. Definitely great to see good, trustworthy, pragmatic advice on one of the more technical jobs on these older (indestructible) Mercedes. (Especially the 6cyl)
I adjusted the valves on my w123 it has the first series engine. I adjusted them because I could hear a cam follower making a noise just like an excessive valve clearance would. All the clearances were almost too small to measure. Once I adjusted them as per my manual, the engine ran very smoothly but still has the cam follower noise. I will run it for a short while to see exactly what is happening. I’ve only just got this car and will keep it for a long while. I will post my findings.
I had the valves adjusted on my 1985 300d periodically because I knew they were solid lifters. I did not know the gas motors had solid lifters and needed adjusting.
Hello, can you help me? I have w111 2.2se 1964 what should be the gap between the valves for this car thank you for your help your video was very helpful
Excellent video. What's your opinion of the condition of that camshaft? I see what may be pitting and corrosion but it could also be harmless staining. Most of it is on the side of the lobes where they do not contact the rocker so even in the case of corrosion, I would guess that this is not really an issue. It does suggest that this engine sat for extended periods without use. A possible subject for a future videos might be "the waking of an engine after an extended sleep", centered mostly on how to do it without damaging anything. Cleaning out the fuel system would require its own video. All of the above concern me because I'm currently looking at a 250SE that has been sitting for several years. The body has very nearly zero rust but there is nevertheless a minor haze of rust on the back sides of the cam lobes.

Hey pierre, does this also applies to m115 4 cylinder engines? And can adjusting the valves alter the level of compression since I have one cylinder on 120 psi compared to 140-145 psi on the other three ?
My understanding is that valve adjustment can effect compression. If the valves are adjusted too tight, they could be slightly open which would make compression lower on that cylinder.
I wish the OM61x diesels used that type of adjuster but I’m sure there’s an engineering reason why they use the lock nut setup instead. If I had to guess it’s because of the vibration.
I’m disappointed that your video man edited out the times that you conked your head on the inside of the grill during this task. MB removed all the fun when they changed the hinge design to allow the hood to be opened to the vertical position. If I had a dollar for every time I hit my head this way....
Pierre, I was doing valves on my m117 with the Mercedes crow foot tool, but some valves didn't want to move (started to round the bolt slightly so I stopped) any tips short of taking the camshaft off?
Very helpful Pierre, I have a 72 280SE 2.8 six and this video will really help, Thanks again,, "You the Man"
Pierre, thank you 👍
You are such a wizard. I really love your videos

Nice video. Thank you for the practical knowledge! Was nice to see the team work towards the end. Love it !
What a great video thanks Pierre good to watch some1 who knows what they're doing
Master at work...
Love adjusting the old valves great vid, missing the before and after video to hear the difference.
there was not much of an auditory difference.
Super video Pierre, I would have liked to hear the engine after you did all that good work,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
This is really different from my 1981 Mercedes 240d when it comes to valve adjustment.

Anyone know the valve adjustment for a w111 230 ??

Quite different from my '78 R100 RS, I'm really looking forward to finding a 280 SE to buy
there are plenty of them that need good homes
@@thisisnightshop2037 the cash is my problem for the next year or so. I'd like to find a manual transmission sedan.

Hello, I have the exact same problem, could you please let me know if you found out any info, thank you so much

is there a video for a 280se 1977 inline six or does this also apply?
muy importante la traducion a español...quisiera ver videos sobre motor w108 de mercedes benz 250s
I am searching for the 14mm especial tool to adjust Valves in a M187067 big six engine
Whats the tool part number and where can we purchase a reasonably priced one?
These do pop up on eBay...part numbers are lost on me
Hi pierre u didnt mention 4 cylinders, are they that different? I guess they have counternut, no?What clearance on 240 d pierre? Bob the Belgian🇧🇪🍺👌
Why do you tap the valve with your wrench after every adjustment?
To make sure the rocker is seated. This does affect the clearance .
Hi Pierre, am I right that, that thermostat housing top with that shape is unique to the 250?
no, its on the 280 and 300se as well

it does and it will affect compression

The diesel adjuster is better
Do the old 6 cylinder gassers not hold the adjustment well?
The adjuster usually requires a lot of force to move if it has been sitting for years
That makes sense. Thanks for explaining that. Love the videos!

you're correct. happens all the time
Was this done with the engine hot or cold ?
It is better with the engine cold, is safer for you and dimensions don’t change as the engine cools downs.
Cold In this case
This would hopefully be the similar the Mercedes 240d. I try to adjust my diesel every year.
Its Its supposed to be done every 12000 I do mine every 3 oil changes
The OM engines are completely different...
What is the purpose of adjusting the valves?
@@BrokeLogic to keep the valves opening properly over time they get tight or loose .
@@BrokeLogic and to help the engine breathe
👍

you take the rocker off, not the cam!!!
use the m117 rocker removal tool.
