This was my first year at DCI Finals. Marched with The Academy, so we were long out, and got to be in the stadium to see this live. Pardon my French, but when the show ended, my buddy and I turned to each other, jaws on the floor and unashamedly sobbing like children, and said “Dude. They just fuckin did it. They just beat BD.”
And you know what? They fuckin did.

So when I recieved my championship CD I cranked that volume up in my car and played Phantoms show. My mouth dropped to the damn floor. I was in awe of what I was hearing. Phantom deserved the championship. It was definitely a Championship show too. BDs win based on execution of the show written based on the score sheet in my opinion. If BD won in 2008..........IDK if they come back and eradicate everyone in 2009-2010 with back to back unbeaten seasons, and continue to consistently boatrace the competition to this day. For relation to this show:
1981 and 1982 Phantom Regiment played Spartacus, but they reek of being early 80s drum corps shows (though the 40-inch bottom bass drum is awesome, as is the greater use of tempo changes and gradients)
2005 Mandarins used the Spartacus mellophone solo, but this time, a trumpet played it, and in [concert] F-major rather than E-major
2017 Boston Crusaders played Alberto Ginastera's Piano Concerto no. 2, op. 27, which 2008 Phantom Regiment played after the opening fanfare
Some hidden gems that time forgot about:
2014 Boston Crusaders has some crazy drill demands and tempos from time to time, especially for a corps that placed 10th
2005 Santa Clara Vanguard and 2005 Phantom Regiment had some tounged 16th note features, which were uncommon in that era
2010 Blue Stars feels more like a 2014 show rather than a 2010 show, but in a good way
2001 Phantom Regiment has somewhat dated yet cleanly executed drill, but is a joy to listen to
1979 27th Lancers has an insane colorguard feature

Multiple recent corps offerings [Bloo 2023, Crown 2023, Stars 2023, for example] are particularly guilty of bringing a Broadway show to a football field.. and only the missing woodwinds stops it from being an insane BOA show. Create a new activity if you're so f**king insistent on being able to do whatever you feel like - no one will mind that at all. But the insane, stunning, insult and disrespect to not only DCI founders, but to all the young men who brought the activity out of the military so civilian youth could experience it... there aren't enough words to quantify the hatefulness of it.
"Gee thanks for creating an amazing art form we can enjoy, based on military Drum & bugle/fife/lyre corps, but we're gonna do whatever we want to and F*** the military history and tradition."
I was a marching band member 1977-1980 - no drum Corps in Utah back then - not until 2014. Ad I also had ot memorize the entire repertoire of our shows, unlike most ordinary bands - (we had a US National Guard Staff Sergeant as our band director). But I am also an 8 year Navy vet who spent most of 4 years in Italy on the military honors/daily colors detail and we had to do both US *and* Italian colors ceremonies. I also remember our marching and drilling practice for boot camp that went on for 12 weeks.
I have no problem with the variances of uniforms through a core identity, but theatrical costumes are for a different activity. The insane cost of changing them EVERY YEAR? Yikes. Costumes that can really only be used for one show and maybe never again (see Cavvies 2022 and the very specific detail on their costume). Is it any wonder the kids are being priced out of any possibility of participating? Fine - go nuts with the flags and some other accoutrements, but enough with the uniform insanity. I'm honestly wondering if their isnt some truly underhanded collusion between those making rules decisions about uniform standards and the costume manufacturers.. it looks THAT suspect now.
Amplification - Soloists only, nothing else - musicians should be beating the drum and blowing the horn to project sound -- just like decades of corps before did it. Guitars/Keytars/Synthesizers/Keyboards as standard? WTAF. Troopers are pushing that concept to a reasonable limit and no more with the Harmonica and E-Cello, but remaining true to the basic concept Jim Jones had in mind when he founded them.
Vocal numbers and/or significant voiceover narration: Bloo 2022/2023, Blue Knights 2023, Crown 2022 - and a few other obvious offenders - if your show requires THAT much constant narration/explanation, then you are doing it wrong. How many decades of shows had zero detailed narration and yet everyone completely enjoyed them? Phantom 2008 (Spartacus) told their story on an overwhelming emotional level with nothing more than some screaming of "I am Spartacus!"- all the proof in the world that voiceover is 100% unnecessary, but a bit now and then isn't unreasonable. BAC 2023 has hit it right about the sweet spot.. a few lines in 3 - 4 spots throughout entire show and everyone understands clearly.
The addition of the orchestral pit I believe to be perhaps the single best addition beyond old standard elements the activity has ever seen. Gives a whole new range of young musicians a chance to show off and learn.
See? I'm not completely irrational about some evolution being inevitable. But considering the very name is a military reference, if you cant make *some* effort to even pretend to honor that as the bedrock of the activity, please PLEASE go create a new one between DCI and BOA if necessary. I would be shocked if people who marched in the last 20 years even understood what an actual "Color Guard" is supposed to be... look at the National Anthem ceremony before a big football game, and you'll see. Evolution of that element was gonna happen, and I'm glad it is now open to all genders.
Bottom Line people - earlier the year the Marine Drum & Bugle Corps performed at one of the early shows... and were truly brilliant. They showed how you can be stunning in every way with a standard traditional and unit-specific uniform, no amplification or electronics insanity, and no actual musicians putting their instrument down to dance around or lay on the ground. THAT should be your core inspiration, and then work outward from that.
TL;DR: GET OFF MY LAWN.. wait... I don't have one.
I truly do encourage people in musical and theatrical fields to be experimental, but they need to create a new field of endeavor for it, if they intend to abandon the entire military history and tradition of DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS - the very name is a direct lift from the military. Please remember you wouldnt even have this activity to express yourselves if those generations of men (and eventually women) hadn't been so 'Hardass" and dedicated to the concept. You quite literally owe ALL of them, collectively, your respect and honoring of their traditions and trailblazing.

Very poor color choice on the color guard and flags. They get totally lost on the field.

I think the choice was intentional. The colorguard were the slaves. Ubiquitous, yes, but in context and period, slaves were everywhere and nowhere. The corollary to that is that the titular character began as just another slave, and indistinguishable from the rest.
I do get what you're saying, though. Some of that may be the visual quality of the recording as well; it was 2008, after all. Run this through Premiere to clean up the color balance and remove the visual artifacts and you would probably see those colors much better than you can here.

Holy cow, I thought it was me! I didn't even notice that they had a color guard until part way through the show and then, I kept losing them. Perhaps it is just this recording and perspective. But I think it would have made a better visual presentation if it stood out, even, a little bit more. Just my opinion, I should look at a different recording.
