I agree. Never understood why it got so much hate. Always seemed like a very worthy sequel to me. I'd even say it's superior in at least one respect - the villain, Vigo the Carpathian, is *much* more scary and developed. It's tough to be as creeped out by Gozar when we get so little of the villain.
And you're right to point out that awesome severed head scene in the subway - take *that* all who brush off GBII as a "kiddie" film!

    • @simpleanswer8954

I have never understood why people are so quick to volunteer their own lack of analytical thought. It's one thing to see an opinion and disagree with it. But no, you say you don't even understand why people have that opinion. That makes you a terrible candidate to defend the film. How do you defend criticism when you don't actually understand it?
You'd have a point defending the "kiddie" nature of the film... if you weren't factually wrong. Studio interference and trying to incorporate aspects of the cartoon were very much real issues. Look what they did to Janine. Her appearance changed to reflect the cartoon, and that appearance had also been changed to be more kid friendly. Specific things like the round glasses and her haircut were meant to make her seem more soft and motherly.
Saying Vigo is scary is subjective. I found him corny. Even as a child seeing it for the first time I knew it wasn't as good as the first.
I can't tell you what to like, but it isn't helping your case in favor to just stick your fingers in your ears and ignore legitimate criticisms.

I saw the 1989 sequel as a child in 1989, and even back then I knew right away that the movie was different from the first film. The first movie was more adult, more mature. The second one was good enough, it's not bad, it's just not as brilliant as the first. The second one works best when the characters aren't busting ghosts, the early scenes catching up the guys at the birthday party, Venkman's cable TV show, Egon conducting bogus tests on married couples, and of course that great court room scene. When the second movie introduced Ray and Winston going to a children's birthday party in the first scene, you knew right away this movie was different. Where there even any children or anyone under the age of 18 in the first movie? The two college kids that were probably 20 or 21 in Venkman's shock treatment scene were likely the youngest, but everyone else seemed age 28 or older. Compare that with all other Ghostbusters movies, deliberately going after children. I was a kid when GB2 hit theaters, and I didn't need a kiddie, childish movie that copied the cartoon. The cartoon was good, but it was it's own thing. I wanted a true sequel to the first Ghostbusters movie, and tonally we never really got it.

@@John-ct9zs gb2 still had a scary/unsettling moments. The subway was freaky, the river of slime in the painting and the real location was unsettlings moments and blob monster in the bathtub. The painting was unsettling. These are feelings that are not present in the new ghostbusters movies which are just popcorn action movies.

I have never understood the hate for GB2. I have always lived the way it expanded on the ghosts, the tech and the overall mythos. Having a powerful sorcerer bind himself to a painting in order to preserve his soul long enough to be reincarnated is a hell of a lot more on-brand for a "ghost busting" team than a demigod. I don't mind that Vigo was subdued with positivity and mood slime, it is more of a pay-off for what we've seen throughout the film than when Gozer shows up for five minutes and is outwitted by a guy thinking about roasted marshmallows. I absolutely love the Scoleri brothers - they're terrifying and fun at the same time, which is what the ghosts ought to be. I think the story in GB2 is strong and the big bad is a much stronger presence than in the previous film, which are big green ticks in my book. Also, Winston gets some of the best moments and that always makes happy.

I wouldn't say 2 is better than 1, but it's right up there with it. I think 2 does have more humor and laughs, but that's about all it has over the first. I gotta see them both in theaters, left happy each time, and love them more today. Afterlife was awesome as well, a perfect way to reintroduce the world, the characters, and the lore. It's got me really excited to see Frozen Empire.

I also saw Ghostbusters 2 before I saw the first one and I firmly believe that because I saw it first, I enjoyed it more than the first film. This is primarily because I remember being absolutely terrified of Vigo the Carpathian as a child. This fear, as a result, stuck with me and therefore as years went by I started to really appreciate Vigo as a villain, who is for sure more developed and intimidating than Gozer was.
I personally think what Ghostbusters 2 lacked in terms of having a more, "catering to children" script, it makes up for by having some rather creepy scenes. Seeing the river of slime for the first time had me all like, "wtf?" The scene where Egon and Ray get trapped in the red room that goes up in flames when examining the photos Peter took of Vigo is also horrifying. And of course, the severed head scene when Ray, Egon, and Winston are down in the abandoned train tunnels is pretty iconic.
I intend on seeing a fan edit of Ghostbusters 2 at some point and I look forward to seeing how things add up.

As a kid, I loved 2. I didn't realize until I got a bit older that it was almost a beat-for-beat rehash of the first film. I felt it lost the edge 1 had by playing more to the Real Ghostbusters/family-friendly crowd. Yanosh, however, was and remains priceless. If the film had taken more creative risks and not shied away from being a bit more adult, I think it would be more highly regarded today

I was too young to remember seeing GB1 in theaters, so my first memories were when it came to VHS. I immediately loved it (and the animated series, too). I actually saw GB2 when it released and it was an incredible experience. I've always liked the film, even though I think it is mostly inferior to the original. It still has some very memorable moments and quotable lines and I'm so happy that it came to pass. I was deep in the weeds with Ghostbusters as a kid. There was a lengthy period of time where I was determined that I was going to be a ghostbuster when I grew up. When the first movie came out, I was old enough to understand that it was just a movie, but also young enough to think it was a movie about a real profession :p I watched the animated series every day after school, and made my own spirit guide, writing down all the information I could about the ghosts in each episode. Considerably more than a casual fan being the point :p
When GB2 came out, I had just turned 10 years old. Now old enough to know that ghostbusting was not an actual career path I could follow, but still very invested in the franchise (though the animated series was starting to lose favour with me, having switched its focus to slimer).
Ghostbusters II was the first time I ever felt betrayed by a movie. After five years of investment in the franchise, watching the adventures of the ghostbusters daily after school, suddenly I was asked to believe that not only were the Ghostbusters out of business, but that no one even believed in ghosts, and actively denied the events of the first film. Even at 10 years old, that was more than my suspension of disbelief could accommodate.
I left the theater profoundly disappointed.

Ghostbusters 2 sucked. Its greatest sin was that it WASN'T FUNNY.
Bill Murray did Ghostbusters and his passion project The Razor's Edge in 1984. He was so demoralized by The Razor's Edge failure that he took four years off and moved his family to Paris, only making a cameo in Little Shop of Horrors until he returned in Scrooged. Then Ghostbusters 2. But Murray came back a different person. He didn't unleash the hilarious improvisations anymore like he did in Meatballs, Caddyshack, and the first Ghostbusters (the Peter Venkman role had been written for John Belushi and Bill completely changed it for himself).
Ghostbusters 2 would still be the worst sequel but Ghostbusters 2016 happened, guaranteeing that that abomination will be the worst Ghostbusters sequel and perhaps the worst sequel of all time).

@@ProfessorEclipse Exactly. It also leaves a bad taste in the mouth after the end when they save the city with all the people cheering again. Should they not be thinking "ok, but you people quickly turned your back on us last time though.." lol
I never watched that A-Team movie with Liam Neeson, partly because they destroyed the van right at the beginning.. why?? Ha ha

Does GB 2 rehash the plot beats as GB 1? yes. Does it water down the adult humor a bit? yes. With that said the humor is still way closer to the original film than anything that has come after (except the 2009 video game). The cast still has chemistry and it is still funny and fun. Considering the all the terrible squeals, remakes and reboots these days, GB II is a like a masterpiece. The video game did capture much of the vibe as well. GB 1, GB 2 and the video game were all written by Dan and Harold.

GB2 fell victim to many sequels of the time. They basically redid the first film's story beats.

I'm not going to lie part of me enjoys the second one a lot more than the first one. Are there any sequels that I actually prefer over the original.

    Better than the original?
No, not even close. But it is the only decent sequel we’ve ever gotten.

IMO the worse thing about 2 how stupid everyone other than Dana and the main crew act, it’s weird for people to claim “your full of shit and you were lying” when ghosts were a REAL THING

I don't think this video needs the blow by blow recap of the entire story. Your goal is to tell us WHY its good. NOT to recap the whole movie.
Assume the people who click on this have already seen the movie and have already seen multiple reviews of it. Just tell us why its actually good.
tell us how you felt watching it. Tell us history and technical stuff.
You're doing way too much recapping. This video plays like a Movie review I wrote when I was 11. You're not actually giving your opinions , not selling your opinion.
