The Inbetweeners and Mr. Gilbert in particular is a great example of how British humour is not like American humour. I'm not knocking American humour, there's a lot of American comedy I like, but whereas American humour might stick the knife in, British humour will stick the knife in and then turn it. Gilbert is great at that. I think some times it might have something to do with painting a bleak picture and then making it bleaker still. No, there is no hope, whereas with American sensibility, there always has to be hope somewhere.
