- As of June 25th, 2016, trains are no longer required to sound their horns at any crossings in San Clemente, CA anymore. The crossings are now in the Wayside format, meaning the sound of ATSF steam locomotive 3751's whistle will be heard coming from speakers at all the crossings. All these trains were shot from June 17th - June 24th, 2016 (in no particular order). Mostly shot on June 24th.. obviously being the last day.
Train #1 - Amtrak Pacific Surfliner #785, with cabcar #6900 in the lead departing the San Clemente Amtrak station.

2:05) Train #3 - Metrolink train, with BNSF #5613 leading at Corto lane just north of the pier crossing.
2:43) Train #4 - Amtrak Pacific Surfliner #784, with F59PHI #455 in the lead. Shot from the Pier.
3:39) Train #5 - Amtrak Pacific Surfliner #784, with F59PHI #455 in the lead at Lost Winds, with Drone pace !!!
4:52) Train #6 - Amtrak #583, with F40 NPCU #90229 in the lead at Calafia.
5:41) Train #7 - Metrolink train, with EMD F59PH #871 leading through T, & supporting a K5LA! Drone shot !!!
6:06) Train #8 - Metrolink train, with MP36PH-3C #896 leading through the Pier crossing.

These days are no longer! A few days ago, the no-horn zones at San Clemente have been lifted!

Like seriously, I would just blow the horn anyway regardless of the consequences. What that should tell these quiet zone crybabies is that they need to GROW UP and respect the work that the railroad is doing, if trains can't use their horns then they can't guarantee that trespassers will not trespass and people will not trot through or around crossing gates. Horns = Yes noise but safety. Thanks for sharing Spencer!!!!

I was down in San Clemente at the end of May thinking the QZ had already been activated, but luckily got some footage with the horns going. That being said these wayside "horns" do sound better than most, I mean the 3751 whistle doesn't even sound bad and I'll take it any day over those awful Metrolink K2's...

Wow...if people get killed with actual train horns blowing, what makes anyone think the sound of the 3751 coming through a speaker is going to save anyone? Oh yeah, saving lives isn't what the neighbors care about (who knowingly rented/purchased a home close to a busy railroad right of way)...cutting down on the noise is. This is a great video though. Second to Guilford, I love the Surfline. The drone shots are beautiful.

FUN FACT: Apparently, UP doesn't endorse quiet zones. This information was gathered from a Portland area news agency which covered an expansion of a quiet zone already in place.

BOOOO! These "no blow" zones are dangerous. The tracks were there before these people bought and built their houses and condos next to the rail line. I am not a fan of the wayside horns. Sorry.

Seems like people understand the wayside horn pretty well; I'm seeing a lot of people not waiting and trespassing.

I can see a quiet zone in a large metropolitan area, but along a beech. Come on. There are kids and adults who would just run under those gates right into a train.
Maybe beachgoers don't wanna hear horns constantly blasting because how could they enjoy their time at the beach that way? First the beach goers enjoy sunbathing or swimming when all of a sudden a train horn honks like a billion times. I see your point though. 😊

as a kid i grew up watching trains there, and hearing that loud horn made it that much more memorable. now i am older and a rancher in Mississippi, i never get to see & hear those K5LAs :(
ps: be very carful with those drones, i went to school for UAS engineering and the FAA is a complete butt hole about using them for anything.... great shots tho ;)

Nathan "p2s" on metrolink has the p#2 and 3 bells. They are run by air. When the engineer quills the horn ( doesn't open the air valve all the way) the lower sounding bell sounds first. The bell is a trumpet. So if the engineer opens the air valve half way, the p#2 bell would sound, making that sound.
