    According to Wikipedia, Bowie was partially inspired to write this song after hearing of the Chernobyl disaster while in Switzerland shortly after the initial incident. Can't say I hear much of the resemblance outside the 2nd verse, but it's an interesting tidbit nonetheless.
    "I felt a warm warm breeze
    That melted metal and steel
    I got a bad migraine
    That lasted three long years
    And the pills that I took
    Made my fingers disappear"

    • @jeanmichellelaurent
      @jeanmichellelaurent 4 роки тому +3

      The chorus makes sense as well tho

    • @dars5229
      @dars5229 2 роки тому +4

      I can hear some of it, yeah. The warm "breeze" that melted metal and steel, and being made to take pills. I think it's the third verse that most suits. The "talented child" that came to live in their town is the power of atomic energy. "We never bothered to scream when your mask fell off" = when the core exploded, the shield/mask fell off. Locals didn't scream/panic because they didn't know they were already dead.

    • @ShiroiTengu
      @ShiroiTengu 2 роки тому +3

      Also the original line and also the one Bowie sang live was "you were a VOLATILE child" I'm not sure why it was changed on the released studio version but I think "volatile" suits much better

      Technically not a mullet, his hair is just long layed feathered cut.
      A mullet was when guys had the top to the ears feathered like a short hair cut and the back was long and mostly one length.
      If Bowie's hair was all over a bit longer and fuller it would be a shag, mostly worn by women at the time. Women like Joan Jet wore a short spiky shag usually black was the color of choice.

      Those lyrics are coming true.
      You were a talented child
      You came to live in our town
      We never bothered to scream
      When your mask went on
      We only smelt the gas
      As we lay down to sleep
      Definitely true to what industry is doing to our cities and towns today. From Nestle stealing water out form under us, to industry creating places so toxic, no one can live in many places these days.

    I heard this for the first time recently on a radio show called 'Forgotten 80s' and really liked it. I don't know why it's obscure/forgotten when it's so catchy with a great dance beat. The only 80s Bowie songs played on standard radio are 'Let's Dance' (which seems to be on a loop) or occasionally 'Ashes to Ashes'. I like uncovering 80s gems, but it's surprising that even someone as iconic as Bowie has songs that you rarely hear anymore.

    Fun fact: Peter Frampton can be seen at 1:04, 2:21, 2:26, 3:08, 3:16, and various other points in the background of this music video. He actually played lead guitar on most of the songs on the album this song is from, Never Let Me Down, and the subsequent Glass Spider tour. Many of the theatrics done in shows on that tour were similar to those done in this video, even including Peter not really being involved and just playing guitar to the side. He _did,_ however, sing lead vocals on the chorus of "Sons of the Silent Age" from Bowie's _Heroes_ album, and he played an absolutely killer solo during "Loving the Alien".

      aussiefaraday Yea it's great. Day in Day out is truly wonderful the way the drums crash in on the last chorus after the last verse. Man I love how loud that is. Never Let Me Down the remix version that was released as a single and added a saxophone in the remix is absolutely awesom
      Just another genius interpretation from David changing the arrangement.

    Cool fact: Bowie never liked how the final song came out. He stated that he felt that they rushed it in the studio and that it didn't come out the way he heard it in his head. Also, he always wanted to go back into the studio and redo it but, never did. There's a whole video on UA-cam with the actual producers and engineers who explain it.

      I'm willing to talk about how underrated the actual song is (especially in the later non-80s mix) but this recording, with all the vile sound and arrangement style from the putrid sounding 'Never Let me Down' album should be *more* underrated. I know it's probable that disliked stuff can take on some kind of perverse charm for some but when its creator - Bowie himself - spits on it very publicly, please take notice.

      from wikipedia, something bowie said in 1995 about this album:
      "It was such an awful album. I've gotten to a place now where I'm not very judgmental about myself. I put out what I do, whether it's in visual arts or in music because I know that everything I do is really heartfelt. Even if it's a failure artistically, it doesn't bother me in the same way that Never Let Me Down bothers me. I really shouldn't have even bothered going into the studio to record it. [laughs] In fact, when I play it, I wonder if I did sometimes."

I was so naive and so young, to realize this would later be one of my many favorites in video style and in general. I don’t think I’d be the person I am today if it weren’t for my mum who told me my first song was China girl and how I’d dance around the house. I honestly don’t think I’d be alive today if it weren’t for Bowie, he was more on the father figure side but also more like my overall obsession but music soulmate. I don’t know what I’d do honestly if I did listen to 64+ songs I enjoy from him.

    I remember reading that this was the song that Bowie wanted to release as the first single off the album, but he was overruled/outvoted/persuaded by the record execs to issue 'Day In Day Out' first. I believe the latter got to #17 in the UK charts, and 'Time Will Crawl' subsequently struggled, somewhere in the 30s, if memory serves me correct. We'll never know whether, if TWC had been released first, it would have been top 10. He thought it had a better chance of being a hit than DI, DO.
