The Internet Wants to Know Exactly What This Is | A2 Pulley Splint for an A2 Pulley Injury

  • I've been getting questions about what this little white plastic thing is that I have on my finger. The internet wants to know so I might as well oblige. I recently injured myself........again. I tore or ruptured my A2 pulley on my left ring finger. Pretty weird injury but it's also been a little debilitating. This little white ring is called a pulley pal and helps hold the tendon in place like a splint. It has really helped out a lot in the recovery and allows me to have some use of the finger while it heals. Rock climbers finger is no joke but apparently we can get it gardening too.

      Those finger splints (and the oval-8 splints) are amazing and I wouldn't be able to garden without them as I have a connective tissue disorder that affects the tendons and ligaments. No matter what life throws at us, things always seem better when in the garden. 🙂

    Although I never asked, I really wondered what that white thing you were wearing was. It seems that, since we use and abuse our hands constantly, we really never think about grabbing a tool to do the hard work for us. Yes, gardening can be some of the hardest and most satisfying work ever! I hope the wider wedding band helps, so you won't need to wear that Pulley Pal, and your ring finger can heal. I've had a similar injury to my right hand ring finger. My finger would pop and sometimes get stuck in one position. It's called trigger finger. I actually purchased a small splint meant for trigger finger. It helps support the finger. I can even wear it gardening. There are 2 types of Trigger finger. The type I have can heal with rest. Check out the splint, might work for you also.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 роки тому

      Thanks. This is a little different. Trigger finger is swelling of the tendon that causes it to get stuck as it moves through the finger structures like the pulleys. This is an actual tear of the pulley or rupture of it. I suppose it could lead to trigger finger over time.

  • @Vmurph

    The tendon can actually form a KINK from all the stress (being pulled and stretched). The pullies are actually TUBES, not rings. It’s like a sheath. The kink (in the tendon) usually forms OUTSIDE the pulley, typically at the base, and prevents the tendon from sliding through the pulley smoothly. It can also get inflamed. If the kink or inflammation is small, it’ll still pass through the pulley, but will feel weird and might even click as it passes in and out.
    Mine was like a knot and wouldn’t even fit into the pulley at all, so I couldn’t straighten my finger for months. At one point I was able to force it to go in by vigorously massaging the base while flexing my finger. Big mistake. The knot got stuck inside the sheath, which started to injure the pulley itself. So I bought a splint that completely immobilized my finger and it eventually healed.
    I’m not a mountain climber. I actually injured my finger (and both thumbs!) by GAMING. 😂 Lol, yes, that’s actually a thing! Hard core gamers can get all kinds of RSI (repetitive stress injuries) in their wrists, thumbs, fingers, and even elbow (called gamers elbow). I’m not a hard core gamer, but I play intense games that require vigorous button action, and I was stupid and played way too many hours without a break, for five straight days.

      @@MikeKincaid79 I’ve had numerous injuries from gardening. Hands are common from overwork. If I injured a pulley, I wouldn’t know for sure because most of my injuries have healed in days to weeks without a doctor visit. But not having full control of a finger like you demonstrated is something that I’ve experienced. Made my job a bit difficult providing computer support at the time. When I say that I stop before I cause damage it’s due to the pain I’ve experienced trying to rip out goose grass. It’s in the St. Augustine family, annual grassy weed with a thick mat and grows without much competition. The best way to get rid of it is to pull up by the roots when the soil is moist. And DON’T compost it because the seeds may still germinate. Praying for your healing. 💪

    Mike you really need to be careful when you're using your hands for things. Green example OK on how I injured my ulnar nerve in right arm. I had a small injury on right index finger, something bit/stuck a hole in the cushion part below finger on 28 dec of 2019. I was having a rough time using the hand as it was partially swollen. Came. Home from shopping in January 2020 about a month later after 1st incident, was trying to open small box of individual peaches with my 2 middle fingers and all of a sudden I felt a snap and eas in severe pain. I've dealt with various pain in my life but this one will put anyones tolerance to the test. So word of caution please take note of what you are doing and how you are doing it, because it does not take much. Got to buzz take care Rusty

      That's my problem as well and why I slowly healing. About the time I start feeling like I can get my with doing something then my hands and arms remind me hey stupid what did you do that for??? Lol I just flat refuse to quit and give up. My other half keeps reminding me that I am getting older and not able to do all the things that I used to. I just look at him and say well I dam sure not going to go sit in a rocker and let life pass be by. I definitely feel my age more than I used to a year ago. Dealing with pain 24/7 takes it toll, but it hasn't broke my spirit. I just have to go about things in a different way, but I will get it done.
      If you ever start getting tingling in your 3 last fingers or your arms go to sleep easily, then it's time to be really careful. And I've recently found out that if you've had rotator cuff surgery it can lead to ulnar problems. I've had both done, back in '06 & '07.
      But both were damaged from a fall at work and had to be repaired. It was done arthroscopic, so I only have 3 tiny scars.
      Anyway just wanted to fill you in, and I know and understand the stubborn side, but it cost nothing to stop and re evaluate what you're about to do. Take care my friend, till next time, best always Rusty

    Great explanation. Now, how about an easy way to get rid of lots of brush the easy way and you can save your bacon too! Pigs are great at clearing large areas of brush, they will eat the roots and all! If you get them young you can easily train them on a portable electric net fence. If you get the right breed in a year after they have done a great job (or earlier if you wish) you can have them butchered for you and enjoy the bacon you 'saved and grew from weeds and brush." I have watched others use their pigs like this and thought it was great. I had not considered raising pigs until I saw they can be very useful.

My Dad made his living for about a decade raising pigs and selling them. This was through my teenage years. He had over 100 pigs at one point and we had piglets everywhere. It was a lot of work and those pigs tear up everything. I remember being up at midnight on school nights just trying to get pigs back in after they broke out of their pens. I think I have PTSD from it, LOL.

    Funny how that works but a ring doesn't. In the big picture it could be worse, but as I always say, the sands of time don't flow UP the hourglass. You know what I'm trying to say so I'm not gonna say it!

      I'll say it, LOL. I'm not 20 anymore, just can't seem to get that through my thick skull, haha. My wedding band is a little loose for it to work well. We just went ring shopping the other day and I found a nice wide silver ring that is sized much smaller. Waiting for it to get to the jeweler to pick it up. I think it will do this job much better because it's wide and supportive and tight. I'll let you know if it works. If so, it would be a more permanent solution.

    How is your finger, Mike? For goodness sake, use the right tools!

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 роки тому +1

      I know, wish I could go back in time and hand myself a shovel. Can't go back now so I'm dealing with it. It's pretty banged up and doesn't have much strength. I'm pretty sure I either tore or ruptured the A2 tendon pulley in that finger. I have an ultrasound scheduled in a couple weeks cause that's the soonest they could get me in. There's nothing the surgeon will do with it (thank God for that) but I requested the ultrasound anyway just for peace of mind, I want to know exactly what's wrong with it. If it is a ruptured pulley, it will never heal. Scar tissue will eventually form and I'll still be able to use the rest of my hand but that finger won't be as strong, which isn't the worst thing since the other fingers will compensate. I'm really not that accident prone, lol, this was just another fluke accident that I couldn't have predicted. It's the strangest dang thing. I seem to hurt body parts I didn't even know I had.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 роки тому +1

      I'm constantly working it. Wish it wasn't so bent but the tendon is shorter after the surgery and so it constantly wants to pull the finger in to a curl. I stretch it all the time and it helps for a few minutes but then it curls back in, lol.
