A Masterpiece - the composition (music and lyrics), the Sandy Denny vocals, the beautifully sad playing of Richard Thompson's guitar - the song just sweeps you away in reflection.
Congratulations for being just about the only person to review this classic song, sung by a woman whom many think had the most beautiful of voices. Fairport were a great folk/rock group over here in England. Well, done.
Sandy Denny is a goddess in the annals of folk music. Much like Eva Cassidy we lost her way too soon. How much more we could have heard to sooth our souls.
Sandy Denny was 20 when she wrote this, and I've read that it was one of the first songs she ever wrote. Dead at 31--imagine all the music we never got to hear.
Originally recorded and performed with The Strawbs and available on the album she made with them in Denmark, Sandy Denny and the Strawbs All Our Own Work. Afterwards, Sandy joined Fairport and did the song with them too. The Strawbs went on to become One of the best folk/prog/rock bands. After she died, Strawbs bandleader Dave Cousins recorded a tribute song to her.
Wonderful song. Goose pimples every time... Glad you enjoyed it so much. Apparently it was American folk singer/songwriter Jackson C Frank who persuaded Sandy Denny to give up nursing and go into music full time. The NHS's loss was music's gain...
With Sandy's music you just opened a new world of musical discovery. There is so much there, from her solo works to her work with the Strawbs, Fairport Convention, and Fotheringay. Robert Plant was a huge fan and invited her to sing on the Led Zeppelin song Battle of Evermore, the only time an invited singer performed with the band. If you want to hear more British folk or folk rock music check out the Trees album On the Shore and almost anything by Pentangle, especially their first three albums. Then the masterful solo works by Pentangle founders Bert Jansch and John Renbourn. Additionally, the solo works by Fairport Convention guitarist Richard Thompson.
@@kjfury They stage their own mini Woodstock most years at Cropredy, I've never been but they host some great bands. Have you heard Steeleye Span / Thomas the RHYMER (Album Now we are six, I think).
Thanks for being the only reactor I've seen awesome enough to do Fairport Convention/Sandy Denny! Try this one on for size as well: ua-cam.com/video/5gHOO2EzdBE/v-deo.html
I'm guessing you know Led Zepplin ... few don't? Then you've probably heard Sandy Denny before .... she was the backing vocals for 'Battle of Evermore' on Led Zep four ..... there's a wealth of sound to be had in English folk rock, I hope you explore it .... looks like you've got a heart.

I saw Judy and Richard on 9/3/22 in Mass. On my Bucket list. Wish you were there. I went alone.

A great Fairport number is "Meet on the Ledge" from the album "What we did on our Holidays". It became one of the standards for the band. Enjoy.

One of the great Celtic folk style vocalists. Brilliant, and gone too soon.

Sandy had quite possibly the most beautiful voice ever
Heavens gain & our sad loss. No smoother voice.
My mother has requested this song be played at her funeral. We live in the neighbourhood of the band.

I appreciate your appreciation of music , which sadly no longer exists mainstream. Incomparable melodic overture by Sandy Denny.
