  • I replaced the ceramic shaft inside the rotor assembly with a brass shaft. 1/8" diameter by 3 9/32" long. This is a common failure in SFX pumps.

    I can’t thank you enough for making this video. Not only did it solve the problem, but your explanation was clear and thorough…I was even able to get the product number from your Lowe’s receipt! For anyone who’s interested, it’s 44748 for 1/8” brass rod

    I bought my pool last summer and only used it for 2 months and this summer for about 2 as well and my pump stopped working and it was humming but not working so I found you're video as I was searching to try to fix my problem and I purchased the brass round and cut it to size and boom it's working great now ty so much for you're video now I can enjoy the rest of the summer. I contacted the polygroup company that makes my pool and they would not replace the pump or the rotor assembly as the warranty was for 6 months even tho I didn't use it for that long. I paid almost 600 dollars for it plus chemicals, sand and everything I needed to set it up. I won't purchase a pool from them again I will get a better pool next summer. Again ty so much for you're video without it I would be spending about 40 bucks for the rotor assembly and now everything is just peachy :) :)

    Thank you so much for this video! I was going to go out and buy a $200 pump and I decided to give your fix a try but didn't think it would work because I'm not very handy when it comes to fixing things, but sure enough it worked great! My Canadian Tire sells the Hillman 1/8 inch x 36 inch brass rod (but that brand is not listed on the online site) and I just took it to their auto service desk and asked if they had wire cutters to cut it to exactly 3 5/16" (8.41 cm) and they cut me a couple pieces. I didn't take the bottom piece off of the pump because I couldn't get it off so I just unplugged the pump and worked from the top pulling that magnet out with my fingers and doing the rest of your steps. I cleaned out all the debris from the blades and I put the flattest piece of the brass rod at the bottom of the pump and the top was cut a little crooked so I did what you suggested and sanded it down a little bit on concrete to smooth the edge. The pump works better than it has in a long time! For those of you that are having trouble getting the black round stopper plug to seal the sidewall pool hole while working on the pump just put Vaseline around the edge of that plug and it sticks in place nicely. Thank you again for this awesome money saving video!

    I bought my Summer Waves pool last year and had no problems with the sfx1000 pump all season. I went to open my pool this year and the pump would start to turn on, but wouldn't. I took everything apart thinking it was a broken pin (mine looks to be plastic) and the pin looked totally fine! Upon a closer look though, the top end of the pin is just barely rounded on the edges. So I figured I'd take a chance and flip it and put the good side on top. It started working immediately! Thanks for the great video info and comments from everyone!

    Its so EASY and it WORKS! I am not (but becoming) a handy housewife and this saved us $170. Our 2nd pump just broke and I was ready to buy another one because I didn't know what else to do. I watched this video earlier this afternoon spent $1.59 for the brass rod, worked on the pump for about 15-20 mins and now my pump is working as good or better than new. Thank you so much! Great advice and great video.

    Old pin was snapped Put the new pin in turned it on it hummed for a few seconds no water pumped then nothing, Prior to the new pin it would at least go on. It was worth a try but this is a piece of sh*t . When you start looking for new pump parts etc after 4 months and see so many people with the same issues well like I said, POS. Thank you for the video very kind of you to help people out.
    Part 2: edited the next day
    OK next day I took it apart again. I must have done something wrong with top washer for 1 thing. Also in video I didn't realize at bottom of shaft there is a washer. I also had a shaft from a pool from several years ago. I cut it to recommended size and started over.
    Boom ! Pump kicked in immediately and works better than ever. HUGE SAVINGS as I was not thrilled about buying new pump at almost what the pool cost.
    However this does not change my thoughts as stated above re: this thing : It still is a POS when you need to replace pump parts after a few months . It's common as we see here. Fortunately I and others were very lucky to find this video !!
    Thanks again for this video.

    2nd season of use and my pump ran for about a week then, as described, just the “hum” of the motor and no water flow. Found this excellent video but then found on disassembly that all the fins of the rotor were sheared off! And yes, the ceramic rod was broken. So, had to buy the replacement impeller and immediately made this mod before installing, using the new ceramic one for exact measurement and saving it as a backup. It ran for about a day then quit working again.
    The new rotor had a piece of the plastic sheath covering the strong magnet missing. Perhaps I had not aligned it properly during installation or maybe some large debris caused it. So, I removed all the sheath, careful to not damage the ends. This was not easy by the way. Smoothed everything with sandpaper, reassembled, tested as before then reinstalled. All seems to be working fine - time will tell.
    Thank you, Bob!

      @@tonyadean6117 hi Tonya. With a broken rod, the pump should still power on. It won't physically turn, but there should by some sort of noise/vibration. My friend's pump had debris on the rod and it completely shut the pump down. My buddy thought it was electrically damaged. After cleaning the rod/pump, it fired right up. Mine doesn't have a gasket, but there is 1 of 2 places where it can go.
      1. Inside the locking ring for when it is sealed against the housing. Or
      2. Around the base of the actual pump, where it sits against the housing to creat a seal.
      I hope that helps, if not, maybe someone else with a gasket can assist. Good luck.

    Bob, thank you for the thorough explanation and R & I instriction. As an engineer, I can say that ferromagnetic steel would probably be a poor choice but a non-magnetic stainless alloy would probably hold up well. Understanding that Aluminum might be too weak in bending, I am wondering how the brass has held up.

    • @bobganoosh5520
      @bobganoosh5520  4 роки тому

      If the GFCI keeps tripping, I wonder if you have another electronic item on that same circuit. Like something in the garage or even front porch. Even though outlets are separate, some could be on the same circuit causing an overload then tripping the gfci. If not that, then possibly debris (hair, leaves, bugs) might get into the rotor assembly. Hope that helps.

    Thank you, I was ging to buy another pump, we got three seasons out of the original. When the propeller is shot (no blades) does the power not work? I have zero power in the pump now that the blades are all broken.

    • @bobganoosh5520
      @bobganoosh5520  3 роки тому +1

      In my experiences, I found that the pump loses power when the rotor assembly gets stuck/jammed by some sort of blockage (hair, leaves, debris). In this case, a small piece of plastic from the rotor blades could have found it's way inside. So try removing the entire assembly, cleaning and re-inserting. Then see if you have power. Ultimately, you are going to need a new rotor assembly. If it still doesn't power on, could be the GFCI cord. Hope that helps. Good luck .

      Some mechanical type people are willing to look into why something failed, and a little investigation is all that it takes sometimes to discover what the problem is/was. This is what I did because I knew it would be at least a 100 buck to get a new pump and an 2 hour drive to get one. Glad I found this video. My first attempt to fix the pump I tried an old drill bit, but i knew it would eventually rust (not good). So I did exactly as this video suggested and pump works fine again.

      If the rod was broken, the pump would not circulate at all. If there is some suction and the pump is functioning, there must be some blockage. Just try cleaning it out first and verifying there aren't any leaves, bugs or twigs that are blocking the inlet or discharge. Good luck.

    My question - what the order of assembly when putting back pump into canister.

    • @bobganoosh5520
      @bobganoosh5520  3 роки тому

      The pump is one unit. So the only order is to stick the pump into the housing/canister. Just have to make sure you line up the discharge of the pump to the outlet of the canister. There should be a notch to help line everything up. The tricky part is holding the pump still so you can properly thread the locking ring. Hope that helps

    • @bobganoosh5520
      @bobganoosh5520  3 роки тому

      Hi Monica. The motor would still turn on if the ceramic rod was broken. These motors will not turn on when they get stuck with debris. All it takes is a strand of hair or a little leaf and it can lock these motors up, making you think it's an electrical problem or fried motor. When it's most likely not. If you have the capability, open it up and clean it out. Hopefully that solves your problem. Let me know how it goes.

    • @bobganoosh5520
      @bobganoosh5520  4 роки тому

      If there's bo noise, first check plug and make sure the gfci didn't trip. You can even check the fuse box/panel. Also, you can plug in another electronics item to verify power. If that checks out, then take pump apart and clean. A single strand of hair can take these pumps out of service. Good luck.
