1996 Flashback: AOL goes down for 19 hours

- The online service experienced a major outage that left users and business unplugged from the Internet for nearly an entire day. This 1996 "CBS Evening News" report looked at the impact the outage had on Internet users, who at the time were less than 20 percent of the population. Peter Van Sant has the story of the day America Online went offline.
I remember when 1996 seems so modern, this video makes 1996 look like the early 80s
Yes. I did have a Tandy 1000 RLX 1992. 20 Meg. hard disk drive, a 3 1/2" floppy drive, a dot matrix printer(theirs), their monitor, keyboard and mouse. And a three year warranty, which paid for the quirky hard disk drive which would switch(no warning) between DOS and Desk Mate(I miss this GUI!). The drive was replaced and the system worked very well. I used Print Shop, Wheel of Fortune, "Expert Software" various titles/applications. It was a sweet time! I also learned it's version of BASIC. I started out in computers(using them) with a TI 99 4A, beige, with the cassette recorder, hooked up to a tv. Their version of BASIC. 16K color. Cassette and cartridge software. I miss both systems. I use older Macs, now.
Now people freak out when twitter is down for 5 minutes
I'd be ecstatic if it goes down for good.
OMG. Seriously. SMH.
Donald trump
And the kids freak out when fortnite is down for even a minute
I drink coffee then.
Probably the biggest news story of the 1990s, because this is when the networks and media finally took notice that the internet had arrived.
Y2K remember that ? I think that was the big one ^^
Uh, I think the OJ Simpson trial, Bill Clinton’s impeachment, the Oklahoma City bombings, the attacks at the Atlanta Olympics may have outclipped a 19 hour internet outage story 😉😁.
@@kenndemoll7859 To everyone except 6M people who probably found out before everyone else ha, but yes. True true.
@@cebrinpitts It was news that it led the national news.
@@kenndemoll7859 Those were not shocking (OJ had a history as did Clinton). This came out of nowhere. AOL goes down, that had happened before, but the country all but shutting down showed the world had changed.
It's so crazy that back then anybody who used a computer was considered a nerd or a geek. Now everybody not just has a computer but we all do everything on it now.
I'm still nerdy/geeky but have some social skills. Also, "The Six Million Dollar Man" and "Bionic Woman" shows got me interested in bionics.
And it's always in our pocket... Back then I would have killed to have my own computer and when I finally got my own computer in my bedroom I felt so liberated. These days my personal computer never leaves my body and I've never felt so trapped.
"netheads". I've never heard anyone call themselves that.
I just said that exact same thing out loud.
Remember netscape?
Old reports about the internet are amazing. “We asked my 12 year old nephew. He lied to me, but we think...”
LOL, I was a teenager in the 90s and I've never once heard that term before.
This makes me smile. What a simpler world.
When you had to wait for the screeching modem to connect. Time for coffee, and pet the cat!
Even back when the internet was only out to the public for a year, people were already freaking out about it going down, internet is definitely the biggest addiction ever,
Compuserve has been around since the 1970s but the AOL era began in 1993.
@@raygordonteacheschess5501 I wonder then, if Compuserve went down in the 70s and 80s, did those users also feel that anxiety.
Next to online (as well as mall shopping, coffee, computers in general, and cats!
Sex is actually
Bahahahaha, I actually remember this! It was during the last few weeks of summer vacation before my sophomore year of high school. I kept trying to get on AOL all day! First world problems right there. We would have the same version of this today if all cellular data networks went down for an entire day, only with a lot more adult tantrums involved.
Yeap it was on my birthday august 8th 1996
I would love it if cell phone towers when down forever
I miss when anonymous chats were the norm. Now everyone wants your real name so they can find you irl.
I remember having anxiety attacks every time I was asked for my asl. I mean, how creepy can an acronym get putting sex right after age and before location?
@@waderoberts3701 damn thats deep
“It could be called the silence of the techno nerds”. It shouldn’t, but ok.
It's a silence like that of the lambs.
I was becoming more "techno nerdy" then. Tandy 1000 RLX, 20 meg hard drive, 3 1/2" floppy drive, DOS, Desk Mate(early GUI) and lots of software! I got on the Internet, and later, through an iMac Bondi Blue(a friend bought it for a buck over a decade ago at a tag sale) and got free transportationt to my place, the thing was bulky, but great, I really liked the DVD drive(slot). Easy to get online!
Nothing screams 90s like an adult male with a ponytail.
I feel attacked
That has been around for thousands of years...
Neckbeard Guy when he was young?
today, he is basically a man with a beard with some tattoos
How I feel when I don’t have my phone for a day.
Exactly. This is what it would be like today if cellular networks went down!
1:24 holy moly look at that message
"do you think people treat you nicer because your online persona is tall dark and handsome"
Well um. That sums up the modern internet.
Also, she didn’t use commas. It’s tall, dark and handsome.
Bro I remember that! My dad thought I got us kicked off AOL again 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Dude was heated
I used to keep three or four AOL accounts in reserve for when they'd ban me.
I might still go back in time, patience was necessary, to wait until the modem (screeching) connected. Then , go online. In the meantime, coffee and/or dinner!
@@raygordonteacheschess5501
When I was in 6th grade they shut our whole account down bc I called my friend an A hole.
Thank you for showing me the 90's series of CBS Evening News. =)
Cyberspace, haven’t heard that in at least a decade😂
after 6 years, it appears in my recommended after watching some dialup nostalgia videos
aol was a great internet service for its time
Was my internet in 1996, it was an amazing for the time. They failed to adapt to change, so no more buy in.
I miss it.
WHEN AOL AND YAHOO RULED DA WORLD
Now imagine if Facebook goes down.......all hell will break loose.
It has before. People called 911 over it. I shit you not.
It has happened. And it’s hilarious
I've been on Facebook twice in the last half decade
Facebook has gone down plenty of times. What would be a REAL existential crisis is if cellular data networks were to go down for an entire day.
Largest outage in Facebook history was this past Monday 10/4/2021. Facebook and Instagram were down most of the day.
I miss 90s internet, AOL, Napster, RealPlayer, mIRC, dial-up sound, OG chat rooms, & being able to code my own AOL homepage.
That is correct i am the same way as you are
1996: AOL went down for 19 hours and ended my online relationship.
2021: Facebook went down for 7 hours and ended the entire world.
More like Instagram went down for 5 minutes and the universe exploded
Man, I miss 1996.
you and me both
I was born in 96'😂
Hello fellow Netheads. Glad to finally be reconnected.
My home WiFi went off for 12 mins due to upgrade from the service provider...and it felt like hours before it came back online
(0:13) That colour scheme somehow screams to me a short story of someone upgrading from Windows 3.1 or 3.11 to Windows 95.
"more primitive technology"
1996
I was without the internet for a month
It wasnt fun
back in 1996, we had things to do like hang out with our friends at the mall
I remember that. I went back to reading books during the time, cooking pizza(frozen). I still love to read and learn new things. I did learn a lot of patience while the modem was(screeching) doing it's thing. It was still fun, insomnia began with the beginnings of the Internet, and coffee-fueled evenings!
Back then, we'd hate this. Now? We'd be like "Oh, it's AOL, must be their death."
Instagram went down for a few barely 3hours a few weeks back. panic rose, the news yelled ^^
Some people can't get online.
News: "It could be called the silence of the techno nerds"
Wow most people will freak out if insta goes out for 13 seconds
0:35 No one noticed that her name is Gregg? 🧐
She is a man! Lol jk
Back then, it was acceptable, I guess, for females to have names like that..
Well if there was once a boy named Sue, why not?
Male Erin here checking in! 👋
Greggina?
I sometimes feel frustrated when either the internet is down or the sites are not working properly.
I don’t get it: the actual AOL dial up service was down or it was just the AOL website?
"Netheads and Geeks, thats what they call themselves..."
no one ever called themselves that just like no one ever will call you a legitimate journalist
I laugh how that guy thinks we're going online to look at news and stock quotes. lol.
The modern equivalent is when your mobile carrier takes a dump.
I remember this.
Of course you do..
Oh when everything should stayed the way it did.
Why does the guy at 0:42 look like someone adjusted the face size slider on his head to v.smol?
When I first watched this news video 5 years ago I thought this was real and it did really did went down because I thought it was 1996 at first
Kids today would Suicide like it was the stock market crash of the 20's
Watching this after the six hour Facebook shutdown of 2021.
If we only knew what it would all eventually become…
Bruh this si like if google went down imagine if that went down FOR 19 HOURS?! yea people would go crazy
at 0:32, is that a toshiba t4600c?
Yeah I remember the first time I got catfished, it was in 1996. Her ankles looked like they were melting in to her feet.
Largest outage in Facebook history was this past Monday October 4, 2021. Facebook and Instagram were down most of the day.
You should have more subscribers
It wouldnt surprise me if AOL actually turned off the servers or whatever on purpose as to get TV News etc interested in the story... Free Advertising!
Whether you realize it or not, the world hasn't been the same since. Never take anything at face value.
They took on so many memberships that the system crashed.
who else is watching this in 2021 tho
"netheads" - Ok, boomer...
Were you talking to my comment about that Just so you know I thought 5 years ago when i was young when i saw this i thought it was really real .
This reminds me of when youtube randomly shut down
Internet and people are one these days
Everything happens online today
Its like someone cuts off your hands
Thats how it feels to be without the internet
dont think it feels the same as cutting off your hands 😄, but you are definitely missing important real time information from the world
i freak if reddit goes down for an hour or so. i couldn't imagine having to deal with that for *nineteen hours*
I remember this lol
@jwathas the whole family is like wtf happend! We were already hooked by that point
I don't know why i have strong nostalgia when i look at gui of aol, i never had aol and if i recall correctly it only existed for USA not for other countries?
Yes, it’s America Online
Yes, it's in the name *America* Online
Both the replies are wrong, AOL was in the UK among other countries.
@@inny74 thats actually wrong, it was international.
Early days of internet addiction
Now its wheres the ipad!
I first was on AOL in January 1991
14.4 kbps max connection speed.
Actually in those days not everyone had the internet but only a few people had it like rich or middle class suburban kids or libraries.
“Primitive Technology”
Meantime in 2021
Hospitals/Doctors’ Offices: We only accept faxes
🤦♂️
6oz sirloin for $36 is kinda expensive for '96.
1:16 from this point on the world went down hill
Some of those 35 year old younger boomers back then talk bad about us millennials/Gen Z going crazy about technology... smh.
*NetHeads*
I wish this would happen to Facebook
*where can i order a steak*
grubhub
well, what if today the whole internet would crash for 19 hours?
....So what caused the outtage ?
there was too many people using aol at the same time, so they crashed. they had to spend millions of dollars to fix this
Someone hacked the Gibson server...
@@SpaRtanl33tz hey we did what we had to do. Hack the planet!
makes me wish i was born in 1986 instead of 2006....
The 80s and the 90s were the best time in human history
I was born in the 80s
80s 90s 1997 AOL American Online 50 Free Hours - Hard Disk New in Package Version 3.0
Western civilization has peaked. People were happy in 80s and 90s, beyond 2000 most people are just miserable. Most likely due to social media and cost of living
This was my own personal 9/11.
jeez what a poor analogy
I’m a nethead
When phones internet down me
Omg computers could have been so much smaller! I have no idea why companies insisted on one size for 20 years. Well, except apple. But they had their own problems lol
1997 AOL American Online 50 Free Hours - Hard Disk New in Package Version 3.0
damn those AOL promo cards were legit
I wouldn’t care that much if I was in this situation during those days I would just break out the PlayStation and play some crash bandicoot
I watched cartoons and stuff on Nickelodean and Disney Channel (when they were actually GOOD and not MEDIOCRE!) We didn't have game systems until the PS2 came out XD Now, my MOTHER would have as she was ALWAYS on AOL! XD
@@emmakawasaki9606 I would watch pbs
WOW! There was uber eats back then!
6 million? 🤔
"netheads and geeks" lmao this aged very poorly.
As of now, some where in the US, storage wars will be battling to bid for lockers and they will find some of these old computers and monitors... Yeeep!
HEEEY DONT SAY THET I COLECT EM U NO!!!!!!
i wonder how slow inernet back in the day lol i cant not play mw 2 on AOL lol
websites and web pages were much smaller with lower quality graphics.
electronic chat - discord
sooo i guess noone had cellphones back then
No, because they cost a fortune
They did in 1996 but they cost more than a dinner table so the average person didn't start having one until 1997 and onwards
I love blatant news advertising.
🤣🤣🤣
Netheads
That's a real bra moment
Calling faxes primitive tech then and f'in doctor's offices still only fax crap.
How funny the news anchor making jokes here and calling people netheads and technogeeks. Nowadays a person can barely go a minute without looking on the internet.
And cybering with hot girls but in reality were all fat lmao
My father killed my mom and then tried to off me, on this dreadful day.
WTF
I suppose "pics or it didn't happen" wouldn't work here.
lol most random comment ever
boomers killed the internet
