So many childhood memories from this game. I remember being a kid and for months not knowing how to get to Sector Y until my friend came over to show me a "secret passage" he heard from another kid on the playground. Then together we all watched Andross disintegrate not into a robot but into his brain form. That was such a wow moment from an incredible game.

It is funny what you said about the waterfall being the secret ending because it was the normal ending to me as a kid. I used to feel so bad when Falco died that I would reset the Nintendo 64, and since I was kinda bad at the game, I used to reset a lot until I was able to save him lol.
I dont know what happened, but one day I must have skiped one of those arches you have to fly through, so the game took me to the easy path, even though Falco was alive. I was schocked to see there was another boss on the level

For me as a 10 year old, it was the opening scene. The music on the first stage, the voice acting and the end line from the first boss. "who are you guys?" "Where star fox!" "Noooooo" and the biggest polygon explosion Ihad ever scene at that point. My Xmas that year for me and my brother was an N64, 2 controllers, lylat wars and golden eye. The folks hit it out of the park. It was the first Xmas we had where they managed to recover financially after a few years of hardship due to business failure. They spoilt us at the time and we didn't even know it. It's nice to look back at that time with very fond memories 💖

At the end of the game when the screen turned white unexpectedly, as a kid it felt so long i thought the console froze up.... Till the dialog came thru. .... One thing I love about the original Star Fox 64 is that the boys at Nintendo actually left it deliberately vague whether or not Fox hallucinated/saw a vision of his father in his Arwing, because a tiny little speck of moving light is visible during the ending cutscene of the mission, flying at a distance and disappearing behind Great Fox, with the same color as the engine exhaust of the Arwings. A great little "It was a fantasy...or was it?" piece of mystery to close out the game on.

I have something funny to tell about this game. When I was a kid, I knew about the waterfall secret passage in the first level for a long time. And I also knew about having to save Falco. What I DIDN’T know was having to fly under the arches. Because a friend of mine that told me about the waterfall, he never told me about the arches.
He probably did that by accident & didn’t know that was one of the requirements to reach the secret route.
So for years, I tried to save Falco, but never tried going under the arches because nobody tells you to do so, and i couldn’t understand why I couldn’t get inside the waterfall.
Years later I found out about the arches and I said “no way. THAT was the reason??”
For the first time ever I was able to reach Aquas, the underwater level. And my mind was blown. The atmosphere was so good, the level was so unsettling due to it being almost completely in the dark, and the boss fight, oh boy.
If I had to fight that giant clamshell monster completely in the dark as a kid, I would have shit my pants off.
    Awesome.

    • @Fobb
      @Fobb  2 місяці тому

Dude I have almost the exact same story! I accidentally triggered it one time and had no idea how it happened - I knew it had something to do with saving Falco, but I didn't realise until months later that you had to fly under the archways. I thought it was something to do with the amount of health Falco had left when you saved him, and kept trying to get his health down to the exact level as when I triggered it for the first time 😂

So back in '97 i wanted an N64, and i had to save up enough money to get one. I went to Toys R Us to get one once i finally did, but i only had enough to get the console. A few months later, i had saved up enough to get my first game, and Star Fox 64 had just come out not long prior.
It's like it was meant to be. I already loved the original Star Fox and that boxart just spoke to me. Instantly fell in love with this game. Easily one of my favorite games of all time. Massively replayable and ridiculously quotable, gotta love it.

Another very clever thing about the alternate boss in the first level is that earlier on during the section in the city, the game sets up that flying through things like arches will reward you. Flying through the arched buildings and spaces in the elevated road supports will all reward the player with rings, bombs, or extra enemies to shoot. So it won’t take many playthroughs for a player to instinctively try to fly through the rock arches that trigger the alternate boss. No need for handholding or for the player to buy the strategy guide.
StarFox 64 really is a masterclass in game design.

Me and my friend's have been reciting lines from this game for almost 30 years! I got an N64 and this game for Christmas in 97 and stood up playing through the entire first play through because I was so drawn in. When the Macbeth explosion happened I guess the rumble pak wasn't secured fully or something because it shook so hard it dropped out of the controller onto my foot and I though it was the coolest thing ever! Also to speak to the replayability, those medals unlocked the landmaster and being able to run around on foot in the battle mode. I could never get the high score on the other side of Venom to unlock the on foot, but I got a medal on every other level!

    • @Fobb

The small details are what make starfox great for me. For example when the arwing is in atmosphere the glow of the engine is red but in the vacuum of space its blue. When your wings are blown off you constantly loose altitude in atmosphere because of loss of lift (happens in space too but ay cant be perfect lol) The voice lines are perfectly timed and programmed and the voice actors did an awesome job. So many memories with this game

I remember as a kid, me and my sisters got the N64 for Christmas, I can't remember what games we got with it, but we had Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye, Lylat Wars, Ocarina of Time, all around that same time. I remember we used to even rent controllers from Xtravision (Irish equivalent of Blockbusters), so that we could play 4 player. I was only around 7 years old, and my sisters were older, so I sucked at all the games! We used to play them so much. Really was such a simple time in life. The N64 is my favourite console ever, not just because of the absolutely amazing games, but the memories too.
Anyway, I remember when we would be playing Lylat Wars, we could never access the Red Path, so we genuinely just assumed that the levels on that part were just inaccessible and just there for show in the Lylat System. Then, one day, I came home from school, and my sister closest to me in age greeted me excitedly "We found a secret ending on Corneria through the waterfall!"
Unfortunately they couldn't get the medal required to access Aquas, so went back to Katina, but now we knew the other levels were playable. We were so excited. However, they couldn't remember how they found the secret ending! It was totally by accident. Then after a few more tries I said "try fly through all the arches". So, we did, and it happened. We celebrated like crazy!
    Good times!

The 3DS version was a great modernisation of the original! It's probably the best way to play the game today, although I think I'll always be slightly partial to the original - the fact that you have to play through the whole thing in one sitting, while impractical nowadays, means that you can't help but become fully engaged in the story every time.

Star Fox 64 is my favorite game of all time, and I don’t even have any nostalgia from it, it’s just that good. I have sunk a lot of hours into that game, with my best run ever being a 1504, and then the next run I tied it exactly. I’ve played this game way too much. Also, for anyone wanting to improve, here are some basic tips:
1: Do whatever is in your power to get the hyper lasers on Corneria and not lose them ever
2: Charge shot groups of enemies, as when the game tells you hit +x, that means you are getting bonus hits, as when you destroy groups of enemies simultaneously with a charge shot, you get points for the number of enemies you destroyed plus the number of enemies that got caught in the blast (all the enemies that were hit but weren’t hit directly by the charge shot)
3: When it comes to shooting your laser, unless you can mash extremely fast, the better method of shooting is this: when you hold down the button to do a charge shot, the game fires 2 or 3 quick lasers before actually charging it, so if you can learn to time you presses just right, you can shoot extremely fast
4: Aside from the basics I just said, there are strategies to get the medals on each stage, so look them up

Kind of brutal but once you get medals and all on master difficulty You unlock some cool things too, including a multiplayer mode where you can just play on foot and shoot each other with giant cannons similar to Star Fox assault on the GameCube. Using the Nintendo switch expansion with the N64 controller this game is an absolute cakewalk since you can save your game before every level and use the fully upgraded laser power-ups at the start of every level. Star Fox 64 was one such game, it was a re-imagining of the Snes game... turned to 11. I know that Shigeru Myamoto hates to make the "same game" multiple times but everything we would want from another Star Fox game is... more of the same. New levels, possibly new moves.

Wow… this take is actually horrible, my friend. You are right about the friends being useless, but that’s literally the only thing you’re right about.
The flight is basically perfect and the controls are super responsive. I really don’t know what you’re talking about.
