- 2021 was obviously a difficult year for many business, and grocery stores were no exception. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, consumers have changed their shopping habits, swapping in-store trips for convenient and safe online ordering. Others have stocked up on supplies in waves, cleaning out shelves at alarming rates. Stay-at-home orders in 2020 had people eating at home more than ever before, and the grocery industry had to adapt to meet their needs. For these reasons and many more, it's not looking good for the future of these grocery store brands. Here are the stores that may not survive 2022.

Which grocery store is your favorite to shop at?
ShopRite! Best selection and good deals.
Giant eagle sad that it’s gonna close in 2022 😞
Kroger.
Kroger, ALDI, and Meijer
@@davidsquires154 Meijer is a department store not a supermarket but it has food though
Shop Rite is doing just fine. All of the store closures except one you mentioned are in urban or impoverished areas, a trend that unfortunately continues across the wider retail industry. That alone says nothing of their financial health.
Ours in Hamilton NJ is doing great too. I've my Shop Rite.
The Fairway in Pelham Manor is now a Shop Rite.
The Shoprite in Egg Harbor Township is still doing extremely well too, every single time I shop there it's so packed full of customers.
Don't forget ShopRite also owns PriceRite stores, which are also doing well. PriceRite is a discount chain in the Northeast similar to Aldi's, except they sell mostly name brand products.
New Jersey without ShopRite is...unthinkable.
I love Shoprite! It is so East Coast. Love the ones in NY (where my family lives) and love the ones in NJ (where I live). Most of the stores have the same workers for years, until recently that is...
Love it
With ShopRite in New Jersey the prices are are going through the roof even with their Bowl & Basket brand. For example 18 oz prunes went from $3.99 to $5.49. Practically many of their Bowl & Basket brands had price increases.
Someday ShopRite prices will be like Whole Foods prices.
I just retired from shoprite after 33yrs. Believe me they will be around for a long time.
👍
whole foods= whole paycheck.
I don't see ShopRite closing, since the stores are independently owned by member groups, including Brown's Chef Markets in PA and NJ
Price Rite in Massachusetts,Connecticut and Rhode Island are a franchise of Shop Rite and are owned by a third party.
This scares me because I work at Dollar Tree. I can say this much. Where I am sales are booming. And we get alot of compliments on how clean we keep it there compared to others of our brand. People were shocked when they found out our prices are going up. But it's like only a quarter and possibly a few dollars on certain things. Which things will be apart on pricing. And this will mean we will be able to get higher quality things. I personally enjoy working there a good amount. Wish they offered Full Time. But it's rare. But hey I could do it. And in the time I wouldn't be Cashiering I be cleaning. Which I been told I do really good on cleaning and stocking. But yeah I say working at Dollar Tree isn't all bad. Varies of course from place to place. Where I work most people are nice and pretty passionate about crafting. Along with being very passionate about decorating for Holidays. But yeah out of all the jobs I've had over the years I think I enjoy this one the most. Sure there are days I'm upset or scared. (People can be scary.) But I like this job way better.
I've been to some sorry appearance dollar trees. As for the increase, 25% margin is a awful lot, almost like price gouging. If they say it's wages, look again, they are well known for hiring a new manager at a starting rate less than their predecessor was hired at, so much turnover. I lived in a one-location town, with a college in it, how many times 4+ years ago even, don't blame CV-19, were there temporary hours on the doors that lasted for months
I live in central New Jersey in the Flemington area and every ShopRite within a 20 mile radius is so busy you have to wait for a parking spot. So they must be selling something , they're higher than Walmart but if you want Quality Food ShopRite is your answer
I'm in the Toms river area, and there are 4 Shop Rites within a 7-10 mile radius and all of them are always mobbed, even during the pandemic. More importantly - they generally have the best prices which has built a very loyal customer base.
I'm in the Atlantic/Cape May County area and ShopRites are always packed. Some of the resort area stores slow down in the winter, of course, but mainland stores are busy year-round and even busier in the tourist season. They're not going anywhere soon, at least not around here. They're probably the most popular supermarket in NJ. And they're building a new store in Atlantic City.
Shop local home owned stores. Stopped going to Wally world and big grocers for your groceries.
Shop Rite is a locally owned grocery, its a co-op not a corporation. each store is owned individually, we just group together to get supplies and stand a chance against the bigger stores.
We have a local grocery that gets mostly local products and high quality items at a decent price. When there were all the shortages they didn't have too many just toilet paper but cuz they get the meats and deli products locally sourced and a local grower for produce in the summer the prices have stayed relatively low
I don’t like shopping at Walmart
@@MsTwiththeTea1980 I get my pants and home supplies at Walmart but that's it
No walmart or bezos for me. Local.
I would rather pick my own fruit and vegetables than have someone else do it for me.
Me too! I don't want anyone picking my food.
Walgreen's buying out Wrongade makes as much sense as when Popeye's bought out Church's. NEVER buy out a struggling competitor, let them die, then swoop in and take over the locations for FREE. Buying Church's is the reason that Al Copeland lost Popeyes, so I'm not surprised that Walgreen's is following in the same footsteps.
Very true, K Mart in 1976 took over many W.T.Grant stores when the W.T.Grant store chain was bankrupt & closing stores. Years later K Mart wound up like W.T.Grant, bankrupt and now no more K Mart stores in the U.S., Canada & Mexico in certain locations, and also the same for Sears as well. The very worst business merger, partnership was Sears & K Mart.
Or Sears being bought by Kmart.
Raising it a quarter is sacrilegious.
Dollar Tree lost me as a customer when they increased their price to $1.25
I stayed away for a good while. I used to go just about every week, now I go every now and then😌😌
ShopRite is very much alive. It may have lost stores due to changing demographics, or in the fringes of their warehouse base in Kesbay, NJ. It is a unique chain where individuals own from 1-30+ stores and in turn own in a co-op venture, Wakefaren, that does buying, warehousing, distribution marketing, store layout and other assistance. Yes, the did discontinue pharmacies in many of their stores due to competition and staffing issues from the pandemic. Many have shifted the former pharmacy space to use with their shop at home service.
People are shopping at Aldi, Save a lot and Walmart for most stable food items and buying meat from local farms or larger stores because saving a few pennies count.
It is so hard to find a good deal on meat lately. Yes, I am always looking for a good savings
I don't shop Aldi or Save-A-Lot Kroger is my go-to store I'm always looking for markdown meat and that's how I plan my menu
up and down arrows, Save Alot used to be good,, at least with price, but no more. Customer Service always sucked there. It was like you didn't like something and wanted to return it they always were nasty. Now I feel they could all go out of business, I'll go to Aldi!
@@MusikLover8 ,
Aldi's isn't any better
@@debbieframpton3857 when were you last to Aldi?
I live in the Detroit, Michigan area and Sav a Lot has been closing stores in the suburbs around the Detroit area. The Sav a Lot stores in the inner city of Detroit are still open. The Sav a Lot stores are located in former A&P, and Farmer Jack Supermarkets.
Save Alot used to be good,, at least with price, but no more. Customer Service always sucked there. It was like you didn't like something and wanted to return it they always were nasty. Now I feel they could all go out of business, I'll go to Aldi!
Sav a Lot is one of Albertsons companies like Acme is also. Here in New England Shaw’s and Star are Albertsons companies also.
Save A Lot was suppose to be the answer to supermarket desserts. But bad management has allow for bad management practices. So this is not a surprise.
When the store first opened up, I saw a lot of shoppers. Towards the end, I was the only person in the store besides a manager and employee. Customers saw the writing on the wall.
The problem for them is that Aldi is taking over the limited-selection market in the US. Aldi makes you feel like a smart shopper for going there, while Save A Lot makes you feel depressed that you don't have other options.
@@Default78334Gotta hand it to Aldi!! They are a shrewd German company who built only one store in America in my area, every other one was an acquisition from companies such as Scott’s,Fernandes,Value Land,Wonder Foods,Thrifty,BigG and many others!! They pay pennies on the dollar for these companies!! Same thing with online dating services such as Match,Tender Hearts, and Silver Singles:all nowadays owned and operated by a German LLC and Same group of shareholders in Germany!! America is no longer operated by Americans much anymore!!!! Aldi is anticipating the demise of Save a lot so that Albertsons can sell this big failing boo-boo to Aldi for pennies on the dollar!!
Save-A-Lot used to have two stores near me in south-ish Florida. One closed several years ago and the other a year after that. For a while they had excellent prices on jalapeños, tomatillos, ginger, and imported beef. Also pasta and sauce and a few other items I give to food pantries. Now the nearest is 30 miles away and I haven’t been there in years.
I love Shoprite. All the Shoprite stores in NY and NJ are great stores, not as overpriced as say, Acme and Kings. I hope they don't disappear... how are people going to get food if we can't go to the grocery store? I enjoy getting my groceries in person. The few times I had delivery they gave me old fruit and veggies and I didn't bother to send them back. I tried, but managers couldn't care any less. We have to keep our grocery stores for Petes sake!
The only time I would use grocery pickup or delivery is for prepacked stuff. I don't trust it for stuff like fresh fruit/vegetables/meats. I know they're just going to throw the first one they see in the bag.

Shop Rite should get rid of Bowl and Basket and bring back the Shoprite label.
@@mikeperry6794 Totally true. Why Bowl and Basket? What were they thinking? They would be fooled by that label?
Inflation is primarily a 'numbers' game. Dollar store should consider something like "5&10_DOLLAR STORE". (Remember Woolworth's 5 and dime store?)
Soon they'll face their own mortality just like Woolworths
I rarely ever shop Dollar General Dollar Tree ( no more) or Family Dollar
Schnuck’s is a relative newcomer to my part of Illinois (haven’t lived there in 30 years though). I was impressed with it on a 2016 visit, but was struck that there were no locations in my impoverished hometown, Decatur.
I was shocked when they closed Schnucks in Shrewsbury. But there is a store about a mile east. But miles before you run into another grocery store west or south.
ShopRite is huge in New York as well. They're literally everywhere in New York. They've been here forever. The Newburgh location you mention was under a lot of competition, including a local grocer that has taken over the local market.
I remember moving out of Chicago & into the suburbs when I was a child and first going to an Eagle super market. I got my usual Nestle Crunch bar off the shelf as a bribe for being well behaved and noticed something I had never seen before. The 10 cent price was discounted to 8 cents. I had never seen such a thing in the big city which goes to show you that price fixing was still alive and well 50 years ago in the windy city.
There is a new ShopRite store in our dying mall, but no one goes there because it’s way too big. No one wants to walk a mile just for milk. My family religiously shops at Weis Markets, a PA based store with locations in 5 other states. We have 6 Weis locations in my county and a new one just north of us. They’re always busy.
Maybe if one or some of these place opened in foid deserts, taking away things like prepared meals, flowers etc. They might do better.
If you live in a food desert it's because your neighbors were getting free food via 5 finger discount.
I shop at Meijer, Walmart, Fresh Thyme, Aldi and occasionally kroger...
I love Meijer and fresh thyme
They should try unloading trucks when they arrive instead of setting del.times then have trucks store their products for 8hrs before they unload them after driver pay lumpers hundreds of dollars.
I totally agree. I've waited 14 hrs to get unloaded at Wally World.
Last year 17 restaurants closed in my town because of cv19. Some never re opened. On the flip side, its been a boom for supermarkets.
What hurt is Walmart when it became big Walmart corporate it hurts lots of businesses especially mom and pop stores.
The Shop Rites in northern NJ are always crowded. They were doing fine, last time I looked.
When I lived in Memphis, Shnuck's came in and bought out Sessel's, a brand considered to be a strong rival for Publix. Sometime in the last 10 years, Schnuck's left Memphis, leaving the area for Kroger and Piggly Wiggle and/or Winn-Dixie to fight it out.
Sounds like Shnooks.
Circle KS have merged with Lil' Champs.
24 hour stores? Kiss them goodbye.
Kroger definitely has problems but they aren't going anywhere. They have a presence in every single state in one way or another.
Kroger does not have a presence in the Northeast...PA, NY, NJ and above.
@@brianstewart1205 They actually do. They own Fred Meyer Jewelers in PA and Littman Jewelers in NY & NJ.
Kroger doesn't have a grocer in NY State!
@@MusikLover8 That's correct, they don't. But like I said they have a presence in every single state in one way or another. And their presence in NY is that they own Littman Jewelers.

im confused as to why shoprite is listed on here? they seem to be thriving in my area. also who buys food at dollar tree? same with Walgreens?
Shop Rite is popping where I am in NJ. Even in the off-season. In the summer time, I don’t even go to shop rite until almost 10 at night when there’s virtually nobody there.
I know. Dollar store groceries? Yuck
I think Walgreen's problem is there are too many of them. There are four within a couple of miles of my house.
In my part of Eastern PA, the main store chains include Giant (not Giant Eagle), Weis, Redner's, and the ubiquitous WalMart and Target.
What area? I've been to Allentown and Bethlehem
There used to be a chain named Food Lane in the Lehigh Valley. What happened to them?
Mashed, Hello, SHOPRITE BECAME my store AFTER A& P, bought PATHMARK, then their prices went up, WHOLE FOODS really had EMPTY SHELVES when AMAZON BOUGHT THEM,then I STOPPED SHOPPING THERE,I DO NOT MISS THEM,ALL the other stores I never saw although I know of them, just NOT in my area, FAIRWAY,came to NJ, TOOK over a PATHMARK STORE. IN what’s NOW WOODFORD PARK, it was WEST PATERSON ,but to far for me ,over 25 miles round trip ., THANKS FOR THE REPORT, CHERIO🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
We have a chain here out west called Ridley's. The stores are in rural , remote towns in Idaho , Wyoming, and Utah primarily.
The stores are relics from the 80s , with outdated interiors , ugly flooring, bad lighting , and most of them I've seen don't have self-checkout.
The Krogers , the Albertsons of the grocery world have no interest in buying this chain , as they are often in such remote areas its probably hard to turn a profit. Being the "only game in town" offers little incentive for them to improve and update.
Where is that Dollar Tree you showed. I have never seen one without a ton of boxes and stuff on the ground. That one was so neat.
I remember Safeway and Aldi's in Indiana never heard of snucks
The NJ Shop-Rites near me are great!
Sav-a-lot definitely should be on this list. Dollar Tree stores be busy all the time. The Whole Foods stores here in Fort Lauderdale stay busy!
My town in NJ just opened a new bigger shop right that everyone is so excited about
KPIX Walgreens closure interview was the best. 🤣
Winn Dixie in FL they are so behind the times. I don’t see how they stay open
what's Fl without the Publix/ W/D competition?
As a Kroger employee, we didn't get a raise or covid pay and yes they did close stores and yes our CEO did a huge raise. I wouldn't be surprised if we closed.
That seems to be a trend for large chains that are going down the hole. It’s happening to Lowe’s as well. They only schedule about half the amount of employees they need at any given time shy of Memorial Day or 4th of July weekends, the CEO gets a massive salary and gives himself a six figure bonus every year and the company has lost its dominant market share status to THD, which is beating them in almost every metric
Times are changing, its not going to stop changing, The sad part of that fact is, Its usually to late when we discovery it wasn't for the best.
I'm from Jersey but had to relocate to MD. I was so happy to see a Shoprite when I arrived.. Unfortunately, it didn't make it. ☹️
Shop rite, hands down. Lidls would be next followed by Trader Joe's, Aldis, That's North East USA. South East USA, would be Publix followed by Aldi's, Trader Joe's, Sprouts. We have no Shop rite or Lidls, unfortunately. Depending were you live you are limited too.
ShopRite rules
At 6 minutes 13 seconds, this is the second electrical sign you've shown. I wonder if any of these you will show have fully working lights. Having pride in one store and making it look good for their customers I figured would be on the top of the chart. But maybe I'm just a stickler there for aesthetics.
My favorite places to grocery shop are LAZY ACRES AND GELSONS. I go to Whole Foods occasionally.
I thought I was watching a video on grocery stores that went off the rails into Dollar Tree, Walgreens, et al. And a 5 store NYC chain takes precedence over looking at Stop & Shop, or a fairly large nE chain, BigY. BTW--ShopRite here in western CT carries a far larger variety & quantity of products than Stop & Shop & BigY together. And the local S&S is cursed with miles of empty shelves. Since this is a 2021 video, seems like someone needs to recognize that New England and the midwest exist.
I don't like S & S. Glad I have Acme here.

The S&S in my dad's hometown in Connecticut closed about a year ago. Shop-Rite is great. Here in Florida, Publix rules...Winn-Dixie is recovering..
Shop Rite in Delaware is in trouble, customers hate the fact that not only is the pharmacy gone, but there's no cashiers anymore, it's all self checkout. I work at a grocery store in the area and we've gotten tons of new customers that are ditching Shop Rite.
And no surprise about Walgreens. Locally, they started last year by reducing pharmacy hours on weekends. Then they came out with the Walgreens credit card, what a joke! Now, the pharmacy section is actually closed on weekends. I worked for Walgreens for 13 years, and there's no way they'll survive without the pharmacy sales on the weekend. The front end just doesn't do enough business to carry the store.
My favorite grocery store is the one with the lowest prices that's close to home.
In Pennsylvania, we have Weis and Giant. Giant DOMINATES the grocery market.
I don't agree with you that Whole Foods Market and Dollar Tree risk closure. Whole Foods Market is owned by one of the five biggest corporations in the world, Amazon can afford to keep it as a loss leader. I assume that Amazon is trying to get more customers to be Prime members. When Dollar Tree announced the price change to $1.25, the stock price soared over 10%, because it indicated that the company had pricing power. The only thing that might not survive is the name.
I agree with you. I am thinking dollar tree will change its name in the future. The Whole Food Markets in my area are still busier than ever
I'm going to shop less at Dollar Tree now that they have raised their prices to $1. 25 I can shop somewhere else prices might be higher but also better quality.
My WholeFoods is always busy and Dollar Tree near me is always busy. In south Florida. Neither has any issues.

There's a lot to be said for making a series of mergers with similar supermarkets and closing unnecessary WholeFoods branches. Harris Teeter would be a perfect partner for a merger. HT's popularity in the Charlotte region is a good reason why WF never got off the ground there.

Just before 2 minutes 16 seconds, I believe the store called Kroger's. If I heard this correctly what was mentioned in your video this is very interesting. I wonder how they get away with that type of paying of employees. I might have heard it wrong though.
Paying additional wages was never mandated. Once certain cities began mandating hero pay, stores in those cities that would cease to be profitable closed. When you make an operating environment hostile for big businesses, they migrate to friendlier lands. Kroger is expanding. They are doing extremely well, financially. One reason for that is the fact that they are not afraid to close poor performing locations.
Winn Dixie stores are also closing as is Sav A Lots.
Aw, I grew up with Shop Rite's. Now I'm in SuperOne territory. It's nowhere near as good...
Weird, where I live there are no Shop Rite, Kroger, or Giant Eagle grocery stores. I believe none of these are in Florida, or at least northern Florida.
Florida is very much a success story vs many of the other states. We have the right leaders in place and still use common sense and grant people their freedoms.
I like stores like trader Joe's. They offer high quality products that can't be found anywhere else. Or that are exclusive to their stores.
It seems that Shop Rite is much more popular throughout Africa than the United States. In the States is kind of like Save A Lot or Stop Shop and Save.
The Shop Rite in Africa has no connections to the NJ/USA based company.
Even successful grocers operate on thin margins. Quantity is what keeps them afloat. If sales fall off noticeably at certain stores, they don't remain open for long.
