Justice said hearing this album after Cross is like seeing an old friend with a new haircut and I agree 100% because both were rock and disco combined with French house
I really liked this album, it had a lot of prog-rock elements, and I thought a lot of their combination of the prog and electric was really interesting, especially on Brianvision, Horsepower, the flute section on On'n'On, and the title track.
I was initially dissapointed with this album after Cross, with the exception of a few songs, but unfortunately I didn't give the whole album another listen (aside from a few tracks I loved) until this year. It is now one of my favorite albums of all time and I agree with every single song being absolutely perfect and the craziest thing I feel the exact same way about Woman which I also finally gave a full listen this year and was blown away. I thought Justice only had one masterpiece LP and now I feel as though their whole discography is a masterpiece to date. Masterpiece may sound a little to far to most, but that's just my opinion.
R.A.M what. I fucking love AVD more and more as the years go by. Cross and AVD are tied for me. I like a lot of songs from Woman but I still haven't fully gotten into it.
@@mogullll That's how it is with artists usually. There is always that song that they hate, like Radiohead Creep, Nirvana Smells like teen spirit, etc.
The members of Justice have said that "Cross" is their night album and "AVD" is their daytime album. That makes a lot of sense. Both are brilliant in their own way. So happy that album 3 from these guys is coming soon. They are in the studio!!
@AgnosticCoffee i think this year has been a FANTASTIC year for music. i've just been digging different genres this year than i have last year. i'm sure it's going to be different next year, too. things change. just gotta adopt, adapt, and improve. :-)
@CommandAndCommentary I'm glad they went in a different direction as well, but can you blame people for expecting Cross 2? I mean, Justice had a pretty definitive sound on that album, and the first single from this album to be released was the most Cross-sounding track of the bunch. Maybe if they dropped only the title track and a song like "Brianvision," the big change this album makes would have been less of a shock. *shrugs*
It's wrong to expect a Cross 2 and nothing more. You should encourage artists to branch out and try new things, stretching their signature sound to new heights. I for one am proud of AVD and enjoy it just as much as Cross.
Dude, love your reviews but I have to say this album really impressed me, and I've been listening to it over and over again and don't seem to bore me. Cheers
@Amanswag I double and triple checked different websites for the spelling, and the track lists I say always say "Brianvision," not "Brainvision." I dunno. It's confusing!
I am a prog fan. The first Justice album is very special to me because it is one, if not the one, that introduced me to house and eletronic music, and that is already something. But I love Audio Video Disco even more. This is the only prog-electro album, ever ! It feels like an awesome summary of the 70's, but with a cool new touch, never been done before. Every track is special, from the neoclassical-heavy metal Canon pt 1 and 2, to the very prog New Lands, the more traditional Helix, and finally the title track, which is an orgasmic sound exploration between rock rythm , electronic power, and ultimate harmonic simplicity. This track has such a dinstinctive, unique sound (frequencies, dynamics) that it is still today my benchmark to test every audio equipment.
@yiazmat35 I thought I said in the review that I'm into Justice changing it up. Maybe I edited that part out? I forget. Honestly, I think Cross is great, but is really limited in style. I mean, I think the only way you can really make Cross 2.0 is to make Cross BIGGER, and cross is so huge, it's hard to imagine a bigger version, really. I'm open to Justice going in different directions. I'm willing to just accept this album as a transitional stage to something greater in the future. :-)
I remember listening to this album for the first couple times and it really didn't sit right with me because I also had the mindset of "this should've been Cross 2.0" but I've learned to think that this is just it's own thing and it's own sound. While of course there are some songs I just don't enjoy like Parade and kiiiinda New Lands, I've grown a liking to most others like Brianvision, Ohio, On 'n' On, and my favorite song, Planisphere. Despite being at the end of the album, Planisphere would be a perfect Segway from Cross to AVD, but it's climactic ending makes that somewhat impossible (as far as clean album progression goes). I like to listen to this album especially when I wanna get in the mood to get stuff done but I don't wanna be a tryhard. A lot of Cross's tracks give me that drive while this one is just a bit more light hearted. I'm probably biased, but I'd give this album a pretty tasty 8.
I'm rather upset that you dislike the album so. I for one absolutely love it! It's become one of my personal favorite albums. The explosive, dynamic sound paired with such a monumentous, intense atmosphere fills my ears with ecstasy. I adore the rustic, daunting civilization-type rock paired with crisp electronic tunes. Like always, there is a fantastic attention to detail and an excellent sense of pacing that I've come to expect from Justice. While I do not care for Brianvision, many songs like Helix, Ohio, and especially On'n'On reflect the very best Justice has to offer. Canon, in particular, is the pure sonification of rising energy followed by a sudden, crashing downward of speed and power. Yes, please!
the next live album is coming out in December. It is going to be at least as good as the first one, A Cross The Universe. Justice's live shows are absolutely insane. I really appreciate that they sell these live recordings.
Cross was too high to reach, but for me AVD was good enough. The concept they used was different and unexpected for me, nice guitar riffs here and there, rock n roll vibe. the Hidden track is brillant.
pretty much the only tracks i didn't like were brianvision and ohio. maybe helix but i can't deny the catchiness and daft punk influence which makes it pretty good. i like how this album is much more "daytime" than cross. this album makes me feel like i'm an explorer discovering america for the first time, cross feels like im in a dark club being battered by all the electronic noises. both are awesome in their own way.
Completely agree. Your opinion on this album is such a breathe of fresh air. I was starting to realize i was the only one who was confused and disappointed in this new album...still looking forward to seeing them live though!
On the canon track they do this exact replica of a lead from Brothers Johnson 'strawberry letter 23' to the T. Literally the exact tone and everything! So the first album from these guys got so much attention that I pretty much skipped this album. However recently in the latest Girl / Chocolate skate video 'On'n'on' was skated to by one of my all time fav's Kenny Anderson. Loved it. Also the track 'New Lands' was skated to by Sean Malto. Needless to say-got new appreciation for the album.
This is exactly how I felt when I listened to this album the first few times. I've been living with it for the last few months and it's really, really grown on me. To the point where I actually love it and crave listening to it. It's one of those albums that just kind of grows on you like that.
@FROGREEL i mean, i think you can agree that this album has a lot less volume, buzz, and punch than cross. are club goers gonna want to hear this in an age where dubstep reigns supreme?
I enjoy the cohesiveness of this new direction for the band. In fact, I think it works as an ALBUM better than Cross did with a much more consistent sound. Nothing is as immediate as on the first record but I feel the concept as a whole is pretty well played out.
@galanoth619 cuz i didn't dig on it that much, sadly. nothing he's done so far has excited me as much as eleven giants did. the new album kinda feels like black metal vocals and motorhead-esque riffing. not bad for what is it, but i guess i'm not feeling that flavor these days. :-/
Say what you want about his overall thoughts about this album; him having Brianvision and the title track as his favorite tracks here is the best take he’s ever had and is ever gonna have about Justice
Trying to live up to Daft Punk's standards is like trying to long jump across the Pacific Ocean, however, with that said, Justice is more qualified to tackle that challenge than ANY other band.
At first I was bummed that it wasn't Cross part II, listened to the entire album a few times and started to like it. After four or five plays I bought it. They are just so talented! It has a shitload of musical value and is ahead of its time.

@FROGREEL well, i think cross had an element of repetition to it, but i had no problem listening to that outside of the club. i get that the repetition is here. i wasn't saying it was necessarily the worst thing in the world. but even though this music dos have electronic repetition, is it gonna get play in the club? is it appropriate for that?
as reviews are a snapshot of your listening experiences at that time, now that time has past (presuming you have listened to this album again) would you give it the same score? Has it grown on you? - i personally think you rated this too harshly! I think people were generally disappointed because cross sounded very fresh,it had such high energy - and people were eager for more of that.. Good review Anthony, I can always understand where you're coming from even if I disagree (although this review summed up my feelings quite well). Also, congratulations on the well-deserved award!
Thanks for the review, Ant ! I would have liked to hear your opinion on Helix. I think it's one of the best songs on that album. Like you, I really like the title track. But not Brianvision, though.
@t3hpez well, i've been a fan of justice before, yeah. i'm sorry, man, but i'm just one dude. i'm gonna have musical likes and dislikes. some of them, naturally, are gonna clash with yours. that's how it goes down. :-)
hey if you're gonna do a track review any time soon, might I suggest the new Black Keys song? personally I think it's meh, but I know the album will be way better.
I think Justice should have made an album in the style of Planisphere, it was different enough from Cross and probably better than where they are now in terms of stylistic direction.
also I'd just like to say that Xavier said this wasn't going to be as heavy and big as cross was. He said the second album was going to be much lighter and not as serious sounding. That's probably why I wasn't really let down by this album.
Loved it, I'd give it a 9. They're first was a tad too grating, but AVD did exactly what I was hoping- hit a softer, more relaxing spot. I agree that it's a little derivative, but I think their movements away from the influences were improvements. Instead of "classic rock watered down by electronica", I'd be more inclined to say it's "classic rock pepped up with some great electronica styling." Kinda like teaching a glam rocker to shuffle or a metalhead to pop n lock, f***in' awesome!!
Well said by a general music guru, I liked this review very much, I'm now a subscriber! My view on this album is that Justice now is more interesting and experimental. As they've mentioned they used limited resources and wanted vocals and instrumental dramaturgy to play a bigger role. I feel it, and it's refreshing to me. Everyone was expecting Cross part 2 and I'm sort of glad they went with a new direction, which I thank god they did or else we'll end up with crap like RHCP's I'm With You. It was a bold idea for an electro group but I respect them more for trying then doing the same thing over and over and over again.
It's got some really cool parts but it's just too inconsistent for me. I really like Civilization, Ohio, Helix, and the title track. The rest, as you've said, just glows with the feeling of something else-- something I've heard before that isn't new. By the way, I really like when you say things about specific tracks. It makes it easier to see where you're coming from since a lot of the time you speak in generalizations. Sometimes I just don't know what you're making reference to. 7/10
Its weird they play this album very well live, the way the remix the songs and stuff really gives that punch thats missing, maybe they should release a live album, and yeah I agree studio album wise this album could have been better but maybe they're transitioning, also!!! check out the remixes for the singles they some great ones especially for new lands, and also yeah planisphere idk if it was part of this album, was an amazing track legit fuckin amazing and if it was then very important,
Justice said hearing this album after Cross is like seeing an old friend with a new haircut and I agree 100% because both were rock and disco combined with French house

Andrew Kaser have you heard the extended version?
Did you know that Justice actually hated it and was almost not being put on the track?

It was a bold idea for an electro group but I respect them more for trying then doing the same thing over and over and over again.
Even thought this album was kind of anticlimactic it's a 7/10. Justice are the only ones who does music like this so originality is still there.
Have you done Coldplay's latest album?
Anybody know what the album in the background is? (To Anthony's right, obviously)
@britishpunk4eva Yes, the blogosphere was so young then.
Its weird they play this album very well live, the way the remix the songs and stuff really gives that punch thats missing, maybe they should release a live album, and yeah I agree studio album wise this album could have been better but maybe they're transitioning, also!!! check out the remixes for the singles they some great ones especially for new lands, and also yeah planisphere idk if it was part of this album, was an amazing track legit fuckin amazing and if it was then very important,
@FROGREEL yes, i read them. :-)
